I'm not sure what you are asking.  The kernel driver loads first and
initializes the hardware.  If the ring test fails, the driver disables the 3D
engine which in term disables acceleration for the rest of the stack.

Does physically removing the nvidia card help?  Note also that I think X uses
decimal for busid directives while lspci uses hex.

glamor is required for acceleration.
