This will work but we end up checking session->itrace_synth_opts twice.  I
suggest to check it once and then process with the if/else if valid:

        if (session->itrace_synth_opts) {
                if (session->itrace_synth_opts->set) {
                        ...
                } else {
                        ...
                }
        }
