Public bug reported:

The "qemu-img check" function is failing on remote (HTTP-hosted) images,
beginning with Ubuntu 19.10 (qemu-utils version 1:4.0+dfsg-0ubuntu9).
With previous versions, through Ubuntu 19.04/qemu-utils version 1:3.1
+dfsg-2ubuntu3.5, the following worked:

$ /usr/bin/qemu-img check  http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
No errors were found on the image.
19778/36032 = 54.89% allocated, 90.34% fragmented, 89.90% compressed clusters
Image end offset: 514064384

The 10.193.37.117 server holds an Apache server that hosts the cloud
images on a LAN. Beginning with Ubuntu 19.10/qemu-utils 1:4.0+dfsg-
0ubuntu9, the same command never returns. (I've left it for up to an
hour with no change.) I'm able to wget the image from the same server
and installation on which qemu-img check fails. I've tried several .img
files on the server, ranging from Bionic to Eoan, with the same results
with all of them.

Hi Rod,
I did try to recreate with the qemu version that you have.

$ apt install apache2 qemu-system-x86
$ qemu-img create -f qcow2 /var/www/html/test.img 1G
# local
$ qemu-img check test.img
No errors were found on the image.
# remote
$ qemu-img check http://localhost:80/test.img
No errors were found on the image.
Image end offset: 262144

Local check and remote check both work just fine.

I recognized the image that you have there and then did:
$ cd /var/www/html/
$ wget https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/bionic/current/bionic-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
# local
$ qemu-img check bionic-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
No errors were found on the image.
16651/36032 = 46.21% allocated, 98.92% fragmented, 98.49% compressed clusters
Image end offset: 344195072
# remote
$ qemu-img check http://localhost:80/bionic-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
<hangs>

Therefore I can confirm the behavior you described.

Quick checks:
- does not depend on the exact image, e.g. https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/eoan/current/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img or https://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/30/Cloud/x86_64/images/Fedora-Cloud-Base-30-1.2.x86_64.qcow2 hang as well
- the former qemu 3.1 based qemu-utils work fine

Maybe that helps to identify a known patch that might already exist.
Even it if doesn't the simple repro in comment #2 should still help.

If there is no immediate idea out of the data we have let me know, this
seems bisectable to me.

Since it seemed so easy, while bisecting I found that it hangs with
v4.0.0 and v3.1.0 from git and even v3.0.0.

Since the reported good version was 3.1 I began to wonder if I might have overlooked something.
I wondered if it might be e.g. the apache version providing a different behavior on http.

I was trying to access the same apache server with 4.0 and 3.1 and ran it against the download target:
$ qemu-img check https://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/30/Cloud/x86_64/images/Fedora-Cloud-Base-30-1.2.x86_64.qcow2

3.1 ran into a segfault and 4.0 seems to hang on that.
Maybe I should take a break and revisit that later, as people might have an idea already what this might be about.

Hi,

Could you try the qemu’s master branch?
bfb23b480a49114315877aacf700b49453e0f9d9 has fixed an issue that sounds
very much like this. The problem in that case is that libcurl 7.59.0
changed behavior, so bisecting qemu will not produce results.

Title:
  qemu-img check failing on remote image in Eoan

Status in QEMU:

Status in qemu package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  The "qemu-img check" function is failing on remote (HTTP-hosted)
  images, beginning with Ubuntu 19.10 (qemu-utils version 1:4.0+dfsg-
  0ubuntu9). With previous versions, through Ubuntu 19.04/qemu-utils
  version 1:3.1+dfsg-2ubuntu3.5, the following worked:

  $ /usr/bin/qemu-img check  http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

I've tried several
  .img files on the server, ranging from Bionic to Eoan, with the same
  results with all of them.

I tried qemu from git, but I get an "unknown protocol" error when I try
to access an image via HTTP:

$ ./qemu-img check http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
qemu-img: Could not open 'http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img': Unknown protocol 'http'

Is there a development library or ./configure option I need to use to
add this support? I didn't see anything obvious in the ./configure
output.

Hi Max,
libcurl 7.65.3-1ubuntu3 and was >7.59 for several releases (more than a year at least) - so there must be something else going on that this triggers now.

But never the less with the fix from [1] I can again get it to work
successfully.

I think I should backport that to our qemu 4.0 in Ubunutu.
It seems to apply fine (just offset -3, no fuzz)
The former seem not affected e.g. qemu 3.1 along libcurl 7.64.0-2ubuntu1 does not expose the behavior.

@Max - As the Author, just to check, do you see any issue backporting
that to qemu 4.0

Hi Christian,

I don’t see any issue but the fact that the whole series should be
backported (0487861685294660b23bc146e1ebd5304aa8bbe0 through
bfb23b480a49114315877aacf700b49453e0f9d9, maybe also c34dc07f9f01cf686,
but that isn’t strictly necessary).

Hi Rod,

You don’t need to add anything, but maybe there’s some library missing.
--enable-curl should force support and then tell you whether there’s
something missing.

@Rod: Your self built issue seems like at config/make time there were
not all build deps available. I have put a test build in PPA [1], could
you give that one a try on your end as well?

For me with the version from the PPA works fine on local as well as remote http connections.
Thanks @Max for the fix.

@Rod:
Waiting for you to test and verify based on the PPA.

  qemu-img check failing on remote image in Eoan

  [Impact]

   * There is fallout due to changes in libcurl that affect qemu and might
     lead to a hang.

   * Fix by backporting the upstream fix

  [Test Case]

   * If you have network just run
     $ qemu-img check http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

   * Without network, install apache2, and get a complex qemu file (like a
     cloud image) onto the system. Then access the file via apache http but
     not localhost (that would work)

  [Regression Potential]

   * The change is local to the libcurl usage of qemu, so that could be
     affected. But then this is what has been found to not work here, so I'd
     expect not too much trouble. But if so then in the curl usage (which
     means disks on http)

  The "qemu-img check" function is failing on remote (HTTP-hosted)
  images, beginning with Ubuntu 19.10 (qemu-utils version 1:4.0+dfsg-
  0ubuntu9). With previous versions, through Ubuntu 19.04/qemu-utils
  version 1:3.1+dfsg-2ubuntu3.5, the following worked:

  $ /usr/bin/qemu-img check  http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

I've tried several
  .img files on the server, ranging from Bionic to Eoan, with the same
  results with all of them.

I managed to check the PPA version just now, and it's working fine.
Thanks for the quick fix!

Now that Focal is open I have opened proper Focal MP replacing the old one and also an Eoan SRU MP right away.

  [Impact]

   * There is fallout due to changes in libcurl that affect qemu and might
     lead to a hang.

   * Fix by backporting the upstream fix

  [Test Case]

   * If you have network just run
     $ qemu-img check http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

  $ /usr/bin/qemu-img check  http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img
  No errors were found on the image.
  19778/36032 = 54.89% allocated, 90.34% fragmented, 89.90% compressed clusters

  images on a LAN. Beginning with Ubuntu 19.10/qemu-utils 1:4.0+dfsg-
  0ubuntu9, the same command never returns. (I've left it for up to an
  hour with no change.) I'm able to wget the image from the same server
  and installation on which qemu-img check fails. I've tried several
  .img files on the server, ranging from Bionic to Eoan, with the same
  results with all of them.

This was tonight first accepted and then immediately rejected as it was
surpassed by a security fix.

=> Rebased and uploaded 1:4.0+dfsg-0ubuntu9.2 to eoan-unapproved again.

Hello Rod, or anyone else affected,

Accepted qemu into eoan-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu/1:4.0+dfsg-
0ubuntu9.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-eoan to verification-done-eoan. If it does not fix
the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag
to verification-failed-eoan. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

All autopkgtests for the newly accepted qemu (1:4.0+dfsg-0ubuntu9.2) for eoan have finished running.
The following regressions have been reported in tests triggered by the package:

ganeti/2.16.0-5ubuntu1 (ppc64el)

Please visit the excuses page listed below and investigate the failures, proceeding afterwards as per the StableReleaseUpdates policy regarding autopkgtest regressions [1].

  [Impact]

   * There is fallout due to changes in libcurl that affect qemu and might
     lead to a hang.

   * Fix by backporting the upstream fix

  [Test Case]

   * If you have network just run
     $ qemu-img check http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

  $ /usr/bin/qemu-img check  http://10.193.37.117/cloud/eoan-server-cloudimg-amd64.img

I've tried several
  .img files on the server, ranging from Bionic to Eoan, with the same
  results with all of them.
