Hello everybody

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-Z600NE with an external PCMCIA 4x CD-ROM drive,
which used to work perfectly until around 2.4.18. With later kernels
I did not succeed to get it running. I tried extensively with 2.4.22.
As far as I remember, 2.4.19-21 did not work either.

I have attached the syslogs for 2.4.18, 2.4.22 and 2.6.0-test7.

Any idea what's wrong? Thanks for the help.

Thom

I'm not sure what broke it, but if you boot with "ide1=0x386,0x180 pci=off"
it works again. Not a perfect solution, but until someone does some
digging to find out exactly when it broke, we're stuck.

Thanks a lot, I tried the parameters
	ide1=0x386,0x180 pci=off
and it did not work. pci=off seems to have broken quite a lot (fb,
jogdial, ...). Just leaving it away and just having ide1=0x386,0x180
didn't help the CD-ROM drive either.

I am now compiling the 2.4.19/20/21 kernels to try to figure out,
where it broke. I have some suspicion that it happened when ide-cs.c
was moved to legacy from drivers/ide.

BTW, if it's legacy, what replaces it?

Thom

Something else that needs fixing is pcmcia-cs has its exclude list
for the RadeonIGP bug set way too wide.
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts has..

exclude port 0x380-0x3ff

Which is bad news, as the Vaio wants port 0x386. The actual ports that
cause problems are 0x3b0->0x3bb and 0x3d3

After fixing this, it detects the drive, but hangs when you try and
mount it.

True, now I will try to compile a kernel with CONFIG_ISA=y.

Let's see...

You were both right. With CONFIG_ISA the system does not hang when I
plug in the PCMCIA card, but I cannot mount it later.

What can I do then?

Thanks for your help,

Binary search to find the exact pre that broke this would be
a good start.

Hey

If have now compiled a series of kernels starting from 2.4.18 up to
2.4.22. The drive stops working with 2.4.21. That is indeed where the
"drivers/ide/legacy" directory was introduced.

What do you mean by binary search? What's a "pre"?

Further: In 2.4.22 I get an Oops and the whole system stops when I
unplug the pcmcia card -> hard reset.

It says:

///////////
remove_proc_entry: hde/identify busy, count=1
remove_proc_entry: ide2/hde busy, count=1
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 655f6373

Try 2.4.21-pre1, 2.4.21-pre2, 2.4.21-pre3 etc. to find exactly where it
stopped working. You can find the patches against 2.4.20 at

ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/testing/old/

Can you please post the full kernel panic message?

Hello Marcelo

The problem starts with 2.4.21-pre1. A couple of seconds after I plug
in the PCMCIA card, the system stops. No noise, no oops, just freeze.

Attached you find the corresponding syslog entries.

Thanks a lot, Tobias

Hello Marcelo

The problem seems to be one of those self-healing things that occur
once in a while. I just tried 2.4.23-pre9 and the CD-ROM drive works
again. Plug in the PCMCIA card, double beep, mount disk, read it,
unmount, unplug card. A mysterious syslog message about a "bad
special flag" that had always shown up has also disappeared.

Seems like someone has worked on it :-)

Anyways, thanks to all kernel developers,

Thom

P.S.: For those interested, the problem was about a PCMCIA CD-ROM on a
Sony Vaio PCG-Z600NE that stopped working with 2.4.21/22.
