I own a toshiba L35 laptop, with a ATI SB450 sound card in it.

This card functions "adequately" with alsa 1.0.12.
it gets the "
ALSA /usr/src/alsa-driver-1.0.12/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:213: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff
" errors scrolling off the screen, as reported by others,
and plays through the speakers only. this laptop has a mic (untested) and a headphone jack. plugging headphones in does stop the speakers, but dosent produce sound through the headphones.

however, switching to 1.0.13rc1 or newer (tried up to 1.0.14rc1) causes a kernel panic right after those errors stop.
sound does not function in these versions.

I've tried the disable_msi=1 option, however, i was not getting a "nobody cared" message before, and turning this option on does nothing.
So, i'm thinking this dosent have to do with the MSI changes recently.

the panic is as follows:
BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000
 printing eip:

the kernel .config is stolen from debian's 2.6.18-3-686 package, and the source is debian's linux-source-2.6.18.

i'm on list for the duration of this issue.

Could you send some more information? What I'd like to see is the
output from "lspci -s 0:14.2 -vn" and "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec*".

It appears that you have a problem similar to one I'm working on for a
new codec (which hasn't been added to the alsa tree yet). This might
help me fix that issue and yours as well.

Thanks,

Tobin Davis

Could you try ALSA HG version?
There was a bug in hda_generic.c that may cause Oops, and got fixed
recently after 1.0.14rc1.

well, thats somewhat better.

note: a hint that you need to download alsa-kernel to compile alsa-driver from hg would be nice.

same behavior as 1.0.12, only, of course, more debugging is turned on in this version.

which means, i have sound, through the speakers, no headphone jack functioning, and no kernel oops.

the last output of loading the module reads as follows:

using the sound results in the following kernel messages, repeatedly.
Dec 28 18:57:15 faiserver kernel: ALSA /usr/src/hg/alsa-driver/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:216: hda_codec: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff

until you close the sound, in which case you recieve the following:
Dec 28 18:57:28 faiserver kernel: hda-intel: Invalid position buffer, using LPIB read method instead.

so, this is a newer version, with the same functionality as 1.0.12, only now, it fills up my syslog. :P
no biggie. i use my laptop with headphones, so this is still "non-woring" as far as i'm concerned. i wont run out of diskspace playing sound. ;P

ask if you need any more debugging information.

This could also explain why my patch for the Stac9250 is breaking.

I've forwarded this fix to my testers. Hope it fixes their systems.

Nope, this didn't fix the problem.

Here is what my testers are seeing:

In further communications with one of the testers, a third phantom codec
is appearing with garbage data.

Codec: Generic ffff ID ffff
Address: 3
Vendor Id: 0xffffffff
Subsystem Id: 0xffffffff
Revision Id: 0xffffffff

They are getting this with and without my patch (even on
alsa-driver-1.0.13). It appears that the system bios is adding this, as
it is there after a clean reboot.

Any ideas?

I am lost :)

I have compared the codec files from mine laptop and with the one you sent.
I used codec files generated by generic support.

And for my laptop it makes sense:

Node 0x14 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x99130110: [Fixed] Speaker at Int ATAPI
Node 0x15 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out

Node 0x16 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x17 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x18 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x01a1183f: [Jack] Mic at Ext Rear
Node 0x19 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x99a30130: [Fixed] Mic at Int ATAPI
Node 0x1a [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out

Node 0x1e [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x400300: Mono Digital
Pin Default 0x99430120: [Fixed] SPDIF Out at Int ATAPI

And, if I understand those correctly, it says that I have one internal speaker
(0x14), one internal Mic (0x19), one jack for another mic (0x18), one jack
for line in (0x1a), and one jack for HP (0x1b). And this is correct, I have
built-in speaker and microphone, and 3 jacks - one for HP, one for line-in
and one for external mic. Oh, and this listing says that I have one internal
digital output which I am not aware of ;)

But when I examine yours listing, it is... strange:

Node 0x14 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x99030110: [Fixed] Line Out at Int ATAPI
Node 0x15 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x01014030: [Jack] Line Out at Ext Rear
Node 0x16 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x17 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x18 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x01a19820: [Jack] Mic at Ext Rear
Node 0x19 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x1a [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018d: Stereo Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x1b [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x1c [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x400001: Stereo
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Node 0x1d [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x400000: Mono
Pin Default 0x9983012f: [Fixed] Line In at Int ATAPI
Node 0x1e [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x400300: Mono Digital
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear

It says, that you have internal line-out (speaker, maybe?), one jack for line
out, one jack for mic, and internal line-in (maybe internal mic?).
So it just looks wrong.... What input/outputs do you have? Do you have
internal mixer? And this listing doesn't say anything about headphones...

Since this autodetection stuff is based on BIOS (at least it says it is ;) ),
maybe you could try upgrading your BIOS?

Can you get any sound out of any external inputs/outputs? Or maybethe mixer
which controls your speaker volume is described in a different way? What
happens if you max all the mixer settings, to get max volume (and unmuted)
everywhere?
I can see that in the codec#0 from not working state you have most of your
audio outputs muted, whereas they are at max volume in working state. Maybe
the right output is just muted? :)

Has anybody any idea what might be a reason of such Pin Defaults?
Why would it be correct for one laptop, and... at least strange for another?
In both cases the generic support was used.

As I said, my adventure with ALSA and hda-intel started about two weeks ago,
so maybe I am missing something obvious here? :)

I have also one more guess - if unmuting and changing volume in all of the
lines doesn't change anything, maybe some of the mixers are just unavailable
because detected (as the listing says: N/A) that they are not present, and
muted by default. Maybe changing the driver to max all the volume levels and
unmute everything by default would help, but then you wouldn't have any
volume control anyway (?) :)

Hmm.. enough of that guessing for now, maybe someone more competent would come
and tell what is wrong here? :P

Your guess is likely correct. The hda_generic.c parser would
understand in that way (assuming it was actually used).

If the generic parser did ever work, it means that the default pin
config is (somehow) correct -- at least for the output he tested.

Julia, please build the driver with --with-debug=detect, and you'll
get more verbose kernel messages when loading the driver.
It will show which pins are detected and how assigned.

Try both cases with and without ALC861VD/660VD patch, and show the
relevant logs. Then we'll have a bit more clue.

thanks,

Takashi
