However, some TPMs return such values in msecs instead of usecs, causing some commands to timeout (e.g the TPM_SaveState, sent at suspend). There's a reworked version of the tpm_tis: Use timeouts returned from TPM patch that adjusts these short timeouts automatically, can you check if it works for you?

Just to clarify, I'm using a version of Linus's upstream that already had the first commit ("Use timeouts returned fromTPM") disabled. However, when things broke, I saw that reverting the "Long default timeouts fix" caused me to no longer get "timeout" errors, and my TPM software started working again, so I could connect to the intranet.

> I don't know however why the second commit you reverted still caused the timeouts, I have the same machine here. Did you test both patches with TPM interrupts disabled? (with tpm_tis interrupts option set to 0)

I tested with no options; until you mentioned it, I didn't even know that this module parameter existed, and it was something I should try toggling. I was just a normal schlub who tried pulling the latest Linus tree, tried using it, and got a broken TPM.

So tell me what to test, and exactly how to test it, and I'm happy to run experiments for you. Do you want me to take Linus's latest upstream (which has one TPM patch reverted), apply your for-james patch, and then try with and without tpm_tis's interrupts option set to zero? I assume that means adding modprobe options parameter interrupts=0?

What's the bug that other users suffer by having a longer timeout? It
means that if things fails it takes longer for them to get an error
message in the case of something that's going to fail anyway, right?
Somehow that seems less serious than the TPM simply completely failing
to function caused by too-short timeouts. (My situation). So sorry
if I'm feeling selfish, but a longer timeout before returning failure
seems less important than my not being able to access the TPM at all.

So, the results of my experiments. First of all, trying to merge in
your for_james branch doesn't help at all. I used the tip of Linus's
tree as of this morning (commit 3e1f2356ce2) and then merged in your
for-james tree (commit b83452256e). No go. I tried setting the
interrupts parameter to both 0 and 1, and either way, things still
didn't work.

OK, next, I tried Linus's idea, which was to put a WARN macro here in
tpm_calc_ordinal_duration:

        if (duration_idx != TPM_UNDEFINED) {
		duration = chip->vendor.duration[duration_idx];
                /* if duration is 0, it's because chip->vendor.duration wasn't \
*/
                /* filled yet, so we set the lowest timeout just to give enough\
 */
                /* time for tpm_get_timeouts() to succeed */
NEW ---->	WARN(duration <=0,
		    "no duration for ordinal %x (diration_idx %d)",
		    ordinal, duration_idx);
                return (duration <= 0 ? HZ : duration);
	} else
                return 2 * 60 * HZ;
}

That resulted in the following data (see attached), which you will
hopefully find useful.

At least for now I'm running very happily with commit c4ff4b829e
reverted. Let me know if there's something else you want me to test.

Data has been sent in another e-mail.

Unfortunately, I was off-line doing these tests (because I can't
connect to the company intranet :-P), so I did't see your e-mail.
I'll be able to reboot and collect this information later, but there's
Real Work I have to get done at this point.... I can tell you that in
my working configuration, both with 2.6.37 and with the latest Linus
tip with commit c4ff4b829e reverted, I have no interrupt assigned to
the TPM.

See above; I can get this information later, if it's really needed,
but unfortunately it's on the company laptop, and I have some real
work I need to get back to. (I don't need network access while at
meetings, so I could run some tests before lunch; now the meetings are
done and I have to get back to coding. :-)

Hi Ted, sorry for the delay.

The bug was that when running the kernel with IMA, at boot time, it
issues 3 TPM commands IIRC, given the 2 min timeout,
when the TPM didn't respond due to it not working with interrupts for
example, the boot hang for 6 minutes. The TPM device
driver then relies on the default values, given neither
tpm_get_timeouts() can succeed. Unfortunately, yes, I don't have a
fix for TPMs not working with interrupts yet, however we've been making
progress there recently, should be out soon.

I understand, and I didn't mean one was more or less important than the
other, just gave the reason I wrote it at that time,
considering that I wasn't aware of the effect you're facing.
You're not being selfish from my POV also, both bugs need to be fixed.

Thanks, it is. HZ isn't enough time for this TPM/setup to have short
timeout commands to succeed, including
the tpm_get_timeouts(). I was skeptic at first that this would be the
reason since I have the same machine,
and was working for me, the reason I asked for these parameters setup
attempts. I'll write a patch that will
contemplate the long boot time timeout and this bugs fixed, pursuing the
interrupts fix path.

At boot time, why don't you just poll? Maybe I'm missing something.

Or you could just simply use a different default timeout during the
boot sequence, or simply tell your IMA users to disable it, since if
you are just hacking the TPM to do a fast fail, the IMA is going to be
broken anyway, right?

Yes, but you're probably doing different TPM operations than I am....
I'm not trying to do IMA, I'm trying to login to a WPA2 protected
network where the private key needed to authenticate to the enterprise
wireless network is locked in the TPM.

Polling is the alternative option there already, in case the TPM doesn't
get an
IRQ assigned. However, for a reason we've now found out (testing on more
platforms before posting), when such happens, the TPM doesn't issue
the interrupt signals when the device driver expects, to make
wait_event_interruptible_timeout() return before timeout.

That's true, but it would be disabled at the bootloader command line,
same place
the interrupts could be disabled, that causes both to work.
However disabling the interrupts at command line was considered to be a
workaround in the bugzilla it was reported, so I understood it should work
as is for the users.

Ah.. completely different story then, I thought you were seeing the
timeouts for
_any_ command, sorry. Just to confirm, can you issue a tpm_version? I
believe you
might have them already, but this requires the tpm-tools and trousers
packages
installed.

Thanks,
Rajiv

TPM is working for me so I can log into employer's network in 2.6.37.
It broke when I tried 2.6.38-rc6, with the following relevant lines from
my dmesg:

[   11.081627] tpm_tis 00:0b: 1.2 TPM (device-id 0x0, rev-id 78)
[   25.734114] tpm_tis 00:0b: Operation Timed out
[   78.040949] tpm_tis 00:0b: Operation Timed out

This caused me to get suspicious, especially since the _other_ TPM
commit in 2.6.38 had already been reverted, so I tried reverting commit
c4ff4b829e: "TPM: Long default timeout fix". With this commit
reverted, my TPM on my Lenovo T410 is once again working.

Given how late we are in the 2.6.38-rc cycle, maybe we should revert
this commit in Linus's tree?
