It's not that easy. We have this in arch/arm/Makefile: zImage Image xipImage bootpImage uImage: vmlinux $(Q)$(MAKE) $(build)=$(boot) MACHINE=$(MACHINE) $(boot)/$@ So arch/arm/boot/Makefile gets evaluated after a successful build.
