Looks good but requires a one-line change.  The last patch is incorrect:

-    rm -f $TEST_IMG.[123].base
+    rm -f "$TEST_IMG.[123].base"

Jeff has suggested this instead:

-    rm -f $TEST_IMG.[123].base
+    rm -f "$TEST_IMG".[123].base
