My proposal would be to disable webkit on powerpc. As I wrote in the
previous analysis mail, there is already an upstream bug report for
this, without a lot of feedback. If someone wants to have webkit on
powerpc, he/she should take the matter upstream.

Presumably avr32 has some relocation limitations like we've seen on mips
xtensaand arc, maybe there's a magic gcc argument to make it use a
different type?

Since it seems a compiler bug, all we can do for now is disable minidlna
for nios2 with a note about a compiler's bug.

Disabling this package for the new release is the best solution. If we 
know that it will fail then it has no sense to keep it enabled.

Anyway..., this is not a problem of MIPS. This is a problem with this 
package and glibc >= 2.18. Here is the commit which fixed the problem 
upstream:

The _gp problem seems to be occurring for a bunch of other packages. We
should contact the Sourcery CodeBench people about this, I believe.
Someone to take the lead on this?

 I've been looking at vlc off and on for the last couple of days. I don't
have a solution yet, but I do have a number of observations.

- When I disable all optional packages, it does work. But I haven't been
able to pinpoint a single dependency that makes it fail. I haven't been
methodical about it, though.

- vlc uses a homegrown "dolt" instead of libtool; however, it does
support libtool as a fallback. Switching to that doesn't make a
difference. And anyway, for linking it calls into libtool.

- The relocatable object files are created in .libs/*.o like they usually
are. They just don't get linked into a .libs/*.so library.

- Our AUTOREGEN breaks a lot of things. During autoregen I get errors like:

modules/stream_out/Modules.am:18: warning: source file 'transcode/osd.c'
is in a subdirectory,
modules/stream_out/Modules.am:18: but option 'subdir-objects' is disabled
modules/stream_out/Makefile.am:10:   'modules/common.am' included from here

and at configure time I get:
configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --disable-gtk-doc,

 My feeling is that vlc is currently not in a state that we can release
it. I have no issue with including some package that doesn't work very
well in a release, but for a flagship package like vlc I think it's
important that we really get it right. And currently we don't.

When I (re-)added this package, I had hoped to have more time to spend
on getting it working properly. (As it happens, the project for which
I needed vlc has now been abandoned.)

I tend to agree that this is a potentially "high profile" package, and
that it ought perhaps to be dropped from the 2014.02 release.

 I would also be OK with adding a comment to the VLC config option that
warns the users that it is not working very well.

That's fine with me, mark it as "depends on BR2_BROKEN" for example.
Add a big fat comment above it that details all the reasons you listed
in your e-mail, so that the next people interested in vlc will find out
precisely why it's marked as broken.

What however annoys me is that we don't have a clear adopter/maintainer
for this package. Simon said he initially did the work, but that he is
no longer interested in the package. So what I fear is that the package
may remain in a broken state for quite a while.

I cannot reproduce this build failure. :(

Could you re-run the build (maybe on the autobuilder itself) and
provide the lua-ev configure/build log with "V=1"?
