Hi,

has this been raised / considered before? To me at least it would be
extremely useful if QEMU binaries built from a git working directory
returned the output of "git describe" (+ possibly a hint about an
unclean working directory), when invoked with "-version".

Not volunteering for the implementation, and also not suggesting /
requesting that others implement it (everyone is busy with real stuff,
I'm sure); just asking if it's been considered.

Thanks!
Laszlo

Currently configure supports a --pkgversion flag which is used by people
packaging QEMU in RPM/Debs to include their arbitrary custom version string.
This information is then reported by -version and the appropriate QMP
command.

We could quite easily make configure default the pkgversion to the current
GIT hash if --pkgversion is not explicitly given.

Daniel

That sounds great, thanks! I'll try to post a patch. I'm thinking of
git-describe, plus appending a plus sign (+), when there are uncommitted
changes (for which I plan to look with ( ! git diff --quiet || ! git
diff --staged --quiet )).

Thanks!

Oh and the nice thing about this is that it is plumbed into libvirt, so
whenever libvirt starts a guest, it will log the pkgversion associated
with QEMU to /var/log/libvirt/qemu/$GUEST.log

Awesome. I use all my long-term guests (that I keep flipping between
upstream and downstream QEMU) with libvirt. Associating log sections
with git trees would be great.

Let's see if I can write this patch in no more than five iterations...

Makefile happened to be in my working set because of the docker test work, so I
went ahead to try this nice feature last evening before going to bed. My
apologies if we have duplicated work.

Please review.

Currently, if not specified in "./configure", QEMU_PKGVERSION will be
empty. Write a rule in Makefile to generate a value from "git describe"
combined with a possible git tree cleanness suffix, and write into a new
header.

    $ cat qemu-version.h
    #define QEMU_PKGVERSION "-v2.6.0-557-gd6550e9-unclean"

Include the header in .c files where the macro is referenced. It's not
necessary to include it in all files, otherwise each time the content of
the file changes, all sources have to be recompiled.

Why -unclean instead of -dirty?

I think SRC_PATH is either an absolute path, or is ".". Both cases are fine.

Will fix.

The non-native speaker can fix that.
