The gdk-pixbuf link does use -lpthread, is this saying that libpng should
be linked against pthread too? I can replicate on demand if you have any
suggestions.

The log message for this commit is a bit misleading.  Glibc 2.25 has
not been released (and the release is not scheduled for another three
weeks) and we clearly can't upgrade to a version that doesn't yet
exist.

If you want to update the recipe to the current tip of master in order
to get more testing of a 2.25 preview during the freeze period then I
think that's a fine idea, but it should not be described as "upgrade to
2.25".

I'll admit that I threw it my build machine before looking closely at the
patch. Yes, this message isn't correct.

That's what it's saying, and this was introduced by the fix for:

https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=20019

But I think this new behaviour is in itself a bug.  It isn't reasonable
to expect any library that calls longjmp() to link -lpthread just in
case it might end up coexisting with another library that does.  (The
fact that libpthread defines longjmp is arguably a bug in itself, but
one that we are stuck with.)

Agreed. I can change it to append RC, I wanted to have wider testing
before we get the final release in Feb first week. So we can weed out
issues proactively.

This is showing when executing target binaries in qemu here I believe. One
workaround we could try is to use LD_PRELOAD of libpthread.so.0, that
might get us over this error, but the issue still may manifest on target apps
using libpng16 with other library pulling in libpthread

Yeah, we should just get the bug fixed (or temporarily revert the patch
in question) rather than applying our own hacks to work around it.  I
doubt libpng is the only library that uses longjmp and doesn't link
-lpthread.

I imagine it'd be fairly easy to generate a testcase, do you want to
have a go at that?

So, amusingly, it now appears that libpng in pthread-using programs has
actually been a bit broken for a long time, since about glibc 2.22.
It's just that the failure has now become more obvious, because ld.so
will refuse to load the binary at all rather than allowing it to load
and having it crash later under some circumstances.

Whether the circumstances that would cause the crash (libpng calling
longjmp) can ever arise with gdk-pixbuf is another question and I don't
know the answer offhand.  If this can happen then it would probably be
when dealing with a corrupted input file.

Anyway, this is definitely a glibc bug and it is now on the list of
blockers for 2.25.  Good work by Ross in finding it!
