Hmm... there is another note here:

     NOTE: normally earlyprintk console gets turned off once the
     regular console is alive - use "earlyprintk=dbgp,keep" to keep
     this channel open beyond early bootup. This can be useful for
     debugging crashes under Xorg, etc.
