Unfortunately the kernel.org gcc-8.1 toolchain just isn't usable for us due to a number of later-fixed regressions. We need to use gcc-8.3, I think, for something that should work again everywhere. And when I last looked (mid-May, from my WIP branch) while I could get gcc-8.3 for ARM I couldn't find one for x86.
