Convert IRQ blocking in intel_breadcrumbs_park() to a local lock.

Affects 5.10-rt and all later releases, up to and including when
rt was merged into mainline.

This problem has been reported in two other linux-rt-users postings,

[PREEMPT_RT] i915: fix PREEMPT_RT locking splats (Clark Williams)
[linux-5.12.y-rt] drm/i915/gt: Fix a lockdep warning with interrupts enabled (Jun Miao)

Neither of these submit the obvious solution, nor,
AFAICT, has either yet been acted on. So I muddy the
waters further by submitting this, a third fix.

RT was merged into mainline? Nobody tells me anything anymore…

5.12 is longer maintained. Could you please take the latest devel tree
for testing and participate in
  https://lore.kernel.org/all/20211005150046.1000285-1-bigeasy@linutronix.de/

?

If anything I would prefer those patches backported into v5.10 if it is
affected.

Hi Sebastian,
Please add my 'Tested-by' to the below patch.

[linux-5.12.y-rt] drm/i915/gt: Fix a lockdep warning with interrupts enabled (Jun Miao)

What was tested was a backport to 5.10-rt. One reject
was encountered, trivially resolved. No other adjustments
were made.

My regression tests of last night all passed without any
of the usual lockdep splats occuring. Prior to this,
I could be assured of a large enough flood of splats to
overwhelm the kernel log.

My test stand is a Supermicro C7Z170-SQ. This is tthe
only system I have on which I could trigger the problem.

I could not find this patch in the 5.12-rt or the 5.15-rt
tree, so I fetched a copy out of the linux-rt-users
archives, and backported that.

I'm looking to see what needs to be added to 5.10-rt. Is there a particular
fix in one of the 5.x-rt trees (x > 10) that I can pull from? Or is this
only an issue with 5.10 and below?

I have this:
  https://lore.kernel.org/all/20211026114100.2593433-1-bigeasy@linutronix.de

pending vs upstream and I *think* more than just that one (2/9 from the
series) needs to be backported here. We do have 1/9 differently in 5.10,
not sure about 4/9.
I would love more feedback here from people and I tried to motivate Joe
to provide some. Clark was so nice to test these patches and provide
feedback. My i915 does not trigger all the code paths I'm touching
there.

If you think that 2/9 is obvious enough, please go ahead. If you start
touching that irq_work area then you might also want to pick
810979682ccc9 ("irq_work: Allow irq_work_sync() to sleep if irq_work() no IRQ support.")
  b4c6f86ec2f64 ("irq_work: Handle some irq_work in a per-CPU thread on PREEMPT_RT")
  09089db79859c ("irq_work: Also rcuwait for !IRQ_WORK_HARD_IRQ on PREEMPT_RT")

which made their way into v5.16-rc1.

I have a few boxes with i915, that maybe could help in testing.

I'll take a look.

Hi Steve, Sebastian,
I was on a no-Internet no-News vacation for the past week,
that is why I haven't responded. Sorry. In any case my
test stand suddenly started working, for no reason that I
can see, and so, for now, I have not been able to continue
my testing.

I will keep poking at it from time to time, see if I can
get the issue to come back.

Joe

I just finished testing 5.10-rt-rc2 with Sebastian's patch 2/9. I'll post
the new rc of it and then release it.

Thanks,

The issue shouldn't come back. I'm curious however if the bunch of i915
patchesm that I have in the latest RT, cause any problems with or with
PREEMPT_RT enabled. That is latency wise or usage wise (like lagging/
juddering playback wobbling GUI or anything like that).

Hi Sebastian,
5.16-rc3-rt6 w/ CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT=y boots on my C7Z170-SQ
motherboard. Graphics look good, mouse moves smoothly,
windows pop up and shut down cleanly, can drag windows
and the movement is smooth.

The i915 oops that triggered my original email is also
gone.

But there is a new oops, in networking, that was not
present in 5.4-rt.

In case you are interested, I've attached the complete
dmesg output. I have not looked at it yet, thought it
better to get this email out pronto.

Joe
