To answer my own question, I rebuilt git and tried directly:

  $ pwd
  /home/ramsay/git
  $ 
  $ ./git version
  git version 1.7.10.1.g64394
  $ 
  $ cd git_remote_helpers/
  $ ../git-ls-files --error-unmatch --stage --

Hmm, so it looks like $path was always relative to cwd!
