Hi,

I notice a regression report on Bugzilla [1]. Quoting from it:

> I've observed a slow boot and shutdown/reboot problems that have been verified on the stock Arch 6.5.1, CachyOS 6.5.0-2 and a custom-compiled 6.5.1 Kernel. I originally had seen a RCU-related trace which I thought to be the cause for these problems as well and reported it in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217864. However that specific trace turned out to be caused by an old patch that I carried around with me since 2022.

See Bugzilla for the full thread.

FYI, it seems like this regression is related to systemd boot loop
reported earlier [2].

To Marcus: On Bugzilla, Artem had asked you to bisect. Do you have
any conclusion on it?

Anyway, I'm adding this regression to be tracked by regzbot:

#regzbot introduced: v6.4..v6.5 https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217874
#regzbot title: slow boot possibly due to firmware (TPM?) issues

Thanks.

Just to keep track, you can remove my earlier report (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217864 <https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217864>) from regzbot. I've split out the boot/shutdown/reboot part from there into this new one as that was still reproducible on default distro Kernels.

Hopefully someone else can find the root cause of the problem. My systemd version is: 254.1, and I also use dbus 1.14.10 and dbus-broker 33.r35.g2220a84 which was configured with -D linux-4-17=true.

Do you have test environment with similar configurations so that
you can bisect there?

> Some other observations: It was very odd to notice that with 6.5.* local h264 video playback with mpv did not work any longer - mpv did not even open the files (it works fine with the older Kernel); the monitor refresh rate was set to 165 Hz (instead of the manually set 120 Hz) and opening of the task bar, Dolphin or attaching files to an E-mail took a lot longer to bring up the dialog than with the older Kernel. Hitting the power button still could successfully turn off the PC though, but clicking on the usual shutdown/reboot Plasma Desktop icons did not seem to work, at least not reliably in every case.

In that case, can you attach mpv output?

Thanks.

To Thorsten: It looks like the reporter can neither bisect nor
test the mainline since he only has production machine instead.
What can I (and the reporter do) in this case?

Thanks.

Well, unless someone[1] can find the root cause (either by guessing,
looking at the code-flow, the kernel warning, bisection, and others
things like that) we are out of luck; the only thing left is then to
hope that someone else will run into this and find the cause or that it
is accidentally fixed. That's definitely not ideal, but that's how it is
sometimes.

Ciao, Thorsten

[1] either the reporter or someone that sees this conversation or the
ticket; but things are quite confusing from the outside perspective and
a lot of private conversation seem to happen, so I doubt anyone will
take a closer look; a bisection is likely the best way forward here
