Hi All,

After a discussion on irc , it was decided that I will take the wheel
for the booth on fosdem.

What would you like to see at the oe booth ?

Which merchandise would you buy and how much do would you spent on it ?

If you work at a company that has presentation materials like
presentation wall or something that is easy to bring and that has not
the company name all over let me know

Do you know any sponsors who can sponsor t-shirts or our flyers ?

Would you like to man our booth and at which time or date are you
available ?

Is it a good idea to make a hardware donation box where companies donate
hardware that we port to openembedded ?

Kind Regards,

Gerwin

I will be at booth. My current fosdem plans:

Saturday:

16:00 - Embedded: Analysing Embedded Memory Use
17:00 - Embedded: OpenMoko

Sunday:

10:00 - OpenSUSE: Suspend to disk and to RAM
11:00 - OpenSUSE: OpenSync
12:00 - Embedded: Open Source Embedded Development with Qtopia
13:00 - GPG/PGP Key Signing session.

Other then then I will be free and plan to be at booth.

idea like idea - we need to consider how to server such requests

Could anyone skilled in Wiki markup add a table for the booth
attendance? Something like

---------Saturday|Sunday|
- 10-12
- 12-14
- 14-16
- 16-18

and then we can insert on which slots we can stand. We should aim
for 2, better 3 persons at any time.

Thanks,

It took me a while to figure out which wiki syntax to use,
but a first pass of it is on the page now. It should
be obvious how to add names to the table when editing the
page.

Do think of promoting this beforehand. I don't think there will be many
people going: "Oh I have this ${DEVICE} in my bag somewhere with all
cables and power supply. Please have it." People usually don't carry
surplus HW with them. A little money donation box might be a good idea
as well. It is easier to organize and people usually carry money to
FOSDEM (you just need to convince them to give it to you instead of
O'Reilly :-)

Cheers,

Maybe an idea to promote it on linuxdevices.com ?

Do we have a fund where we can store the funds we get ?

I was thinking to set up like a hardware distribution list

FYI - I'm not offering anything specific at the moment,
but CELF has a fund for making hardware donations for
interesting OSS projects. If there's some piece of hardware
that someone thinks would really advance the goals of
the OE project, please let me know, and I can have CELF
consider donating it.

Ya know, I'd consider donating hardware (see www.netgate.com for what
we have) and/or cash if someone would put up a
"build the bootable ISO so you can boot-n-install an OE image on a
HD on ye-olde-random PeeCee" set of patches, or even a recipe for same

Or, equivalently, an image (complete with boot sector) that one could
DD onto a CF card or actual IDE drive that would boot a given root
image on ye-olde-PeeCee.

OpenEmbedded would go a lot faster if people could experiment on
garden-variety PCs rather than go through the "fun" of getting it up-
n-running on more esoteric hardware.

Marcin, Jamie, Phil, Gerwin and I are using OE to build for vairous x86 machines
(MACHINE={guinness,epia,x86). For some graphic pleasure:

I know about the guinness and wrap MACHINEs.

What I'm looking for is a short-cut to getting a distro *onto* the disk.

Yes, I'm sure most people could "figure it out" with some time and
effort, but what I want is to make it easier.

If OE would build an x86 disk image that could be 'dd'-ed to a CF
card, then building OE images for Soekris or WRAP boards would be EZ.

If OE would build an x86 disk image that could be 'dd'-ed to an IDE
drive (likely the same as above), then building OE images for
"ordinary PCs" would be trivial.

If OE would build a bootable ISO image that could partition and label
an attached IDE drive, then install the image *onto* that drive, ....
well, I could see all *sorts* of uses for that.

And I'm willing to throw cash, hardware and time at this.

Yes, we sell WRAP boards, but I'm not looking to get a bunch-o-free
development out of the process. (We sell a Gateworks ixp42x board
too, just to be perfectly honest.)

Years ago, I ran (and owned) 'musenki' (google for it or look here:
http://he-colo.netgate.com/~jim/Musenki/. We had build a set of
Motorola 8245/8241 boards, and I'd made linux run on them. I
remember spending a horrific amount of time with a (very) early
version of "buildroot". OE is so much more sophisticated that I'm a
bit taken aback.

The OE learning curve is still quite steep, but I think it would be
less steep with a) a bit more documentation and b) an EZ way to start
creating "little distros" that
run on PCs using it.

Jim

I remember we had this discussion before , the problem is the
bootloader, for example grub requires some extra handlings to get
installed probarly.

I also experimented a bit with disk on modules which were much
faster than the compact flash and much cheaper as well.

I think if you write a script which automate the installation of for
example grub and than copies automatically the files over to cf you are
finished , I did it once long time ago for an embedded voip pabx.

As Koen said I am working on x86 projects like wifi-radio (with a
mini-itx board and some small additions) a set top box and a thin
client. So we are working on it !!

I will have a look if I still can find the software I made that time
for putting the image directly on the flash (I wrote it to produce some
goods)

Regards,

Gerwin

Thanks for your offer !. I think it is good to be in contact.

Because being in contact with celf can enable us as well to be
in touch with a lot of supliers. Is it maybe an idea to extend
this contact ?

We also could use a lot of the input from the industry to improve oe.

Regards,

Gerwin

There appears to be a decent start on "here are the set of steps"
here: http://kbarr.net/bochs

(I've only recently discovered this.)

Its hard to beat $9 (what we pay for 128MB CF), but if you know of a
source, I'm all ears.

I once made 'lilo' work with a buildroot-based system. The makefile
is attached.

I never could get 'grub' to do the same thing, though I prefer grub
to lilo.

Is the wifi-radio tree available anywhere?

Changed it so that everything is in a single table.
