This adds a new QMP command to list any class/object properties,
not just devices.

I do not know how/if we need to address the concern about
abstract/nonabstract classes though.

Changes:
v4:
* cleanup in 1/2

Please comment. Thanks.

ObjectPropertyInfo is more generic and only missing @description.
This adds a description to ObjectPropertyInfo and removes
DevicePropertyInfo so the resulting ObjectPropertyInfo can be used
elsewhere.

There is already 'device-list-properties' which does most of the job,
however it does not handle everything returned by qom-list-types such
as machines as they inherit directly from TYPE_OBJECT and not TYPE_DEVICE.
It does not handle abstract classes either.

This adds a new qom-list-properties command which prints properties
of a specific class and its instance. It is pretty much a simplified copy
of the device-list-properties handler.

Since it creates an object instance, device properties should appear
in the output as they are copied to QOM properties at the instance_init
hook.

This adds a object_class_property_iter_init() helper to allow class
properties enumeration uses it in the new QMP command to allow properties
listing for abstract classes.

Changes:
v3:
* Used ObjectPropertyInfo instead of QOMPropertyInfo

v2:
* added abstract classes support, now things like "pci-device" or
"spapr-machine" show properties, previously these would produce
an "abstract class" error

Quoting my review of the RFC PATCH,
Message-ID: <871si6vt8n.fsf@dusky.pond.sub.org>:

qom-list-properties is like instantiate with default configuration
    and without realizing + qom-list + destroy.

We need to instantiate because QOM properties are dynamic: they
aren't specified by data (which qom-list-properties could simply
read), they are created by (instantiation) code (which
    qom-list-properties has to run).

Properties created only after instantiation (by realize, perhaps)
aren't visible in qom-list-properties. Do such properties exist?

Properties created only in non-default configuration aren't visible
either. Such properties have to exist, or else dynamic property
    creation would be idiotic.

Likewise for properties created differently (say with a different
type) in non-default configuration. We can hope that no such beasts
exist. Since properties get created by code, and code can do
anything, we're reduced to hope. Data is so much easier to reason
    about than code.

And Message-ID: <87r2q3n8oe.fsf@dusky.pond.sub.org>:

Thus, qom-list-properties design limitation: the result need not
reflect properties of instantiated objects. It usually does, as
most QOM properties behave as if they were static. But when it
doesn't, what then? How are users of qom-list-properties supposed
to deal with such inaccurate / incorrect information? Do they just
have to know which properties aren't visible in qom-list-properties,
and which properties are, but cannot be trusted?

Please document the design limitation in a followup patch.

this should be tweaked to say since 2.13.

wow, did not know that the format is that strict :) I'll repost if there is
no other comments about actual notes.

This says what it does, but not why it is a problem. Can you explain
that to me as well?

It is in 2.12:

commit 961c47bb8bacc9ae21c0760fa6e2594156299dd7
Author: Alexey Kardashevskiy <aik@ozlabs.ru>
Date: Fri Mar 2 00:09:39 2018 +1100

qmp: Add qom-list-properties to list QOM object properties

There is already 'device-list-properties' which does most of the job,
however it does not handle everything returned by qom-list-types such
as machines as they inherit directly from TYPE_OBJECT and not TYPE_DEVICE.
It does not handle abstract classes either.

This adds a new qom-list-properties command which prints properties
of a specific class and its instance. It is pretty much a simplified copy
    of the device-list-properties handler.

Since it creates an object instance, device properties should appear
in the output as they are copied to QOM properties at the instance_init
    hook.

This adds a object_class_property_iter_init() helper to allow class
properties enumeration uses it in the new QMP command to allow properties
    listing for abstract classes.

commit 35f63767dc77d85bebff6c6565aceaf74023776a

Date: Fri Mar 2 00:09:38 2018 +1100

    qmp: Merge ObjectPropertyInfo and DevicePropertyInfo

ObjectPropertyInfo is more generic and only missing @description.
This adds a description to ObjectPropertyInfo and removes
DevicePropertyInfo so the resulting ObjectPropertyInfo can be used
    elsewhere.

There is no rationale in the commit body (a good commit message has a
one-line summary of "what", then a paragraph stating "why", making it
easier for the reviewer to check that the patch itself is the "how" that
matches the commit message).

Also, when sending a new patch, it's best to send it as a new top-level
thread, rather than in-reply-to an older thread that has already seen
review commentary (otherwise, it's likely to get missed in the noise).

It probably is not unless someone adds properties in realize() callback, if
this happens, the user would probably expect to see these in these commands
but he/she won't.

Posting it in the existing thread is the rationale which explains better :)
I should have made it "rfc" though as it is not really a patch but rather
an email asking for comments.

Well, normally it is fine but the context would be lost so lots need to be
put to the commit log and I can see how the whole patch is dropped as
useless after all. I am not arguing, just explaining :)

Are there any examples? If not, that belongs in a comment in the code
rather than the QAPI doc comment. If yes, then the doc comment should
include one.

There are roughly 400 of realize(), this is will take a bit of time :)
imho what it does belongs to .json, why it does exactly that belongs to the
git commit log. I'll walk through the realize() hook though, educate
myself, at least :)

There must be examples where instances of the same type have different
properties, or else our design decision to create properties dynamically
was inane.

Buses for example create properties at runtime to link a parent to its
children.  These properties are created when a child device appears;
this is different from creating properties in or the realize() callback,
or upon setting other properties.

The purpose of this command is to tell people/tools what they can pass
to -device/-object/device_add/object_add, so the real question is
whether there are cases where it falls short of that purpose.

If not, maybe the wording for the .json file could be something like:

Objects can create properties at runtime, for example to describe
links between different devices and/or objects. These properties
are not included in the output of this command.

Cheer up, there are only 300 callers of object_property_add_* (apart
from object_property_add_child which is generally not an issue). You
could look at those instead. :)

Seriously, I think the problem with the comment is only that the reader
most likely doesn't care about instance_init() or props, as those are
QEMU implementation details.

Do we have to be certain? Or would "we don't think so" be enough?

Not bad.

In theory, objects can also create properties in response to non-default
configuration, and these would also not be included. Objects could even
create a property with the same name, but different type or description.
Arguably capital-letter Bad Ideas, but nothing prevents such misuse.

Since I'm in a generous mood, I'd rate the thing at Rusty API level 4
"Follow common convention and you'll get it right."

https://ozlabs.org/~rusty/index.cgi/tech/2008-04-01.html

If dynamic properties are really just for internal use, as you seem to
suggest in Message-ID:
<c1d40d88-1c80-2bbd-c28c-613b7fe8d45e@redhat.com>, then we should've had
the common sense to unambiguously separate them from the user-facing
properties. Can we still do that?

I wouldn't say they are for internal use. They are somewhat orthogonal
to the _intended_ use case of this command though. Somebody is bound
to be annoyed by them anyway, but that's sort of expected with dynamic
stuff.

We do have infrastructure for class properties, we just don't use it much.

That makes me suspect that...

... the sane thing to do would be to limit this command to class
properties, and use class properties for anything that doesn't *have* to
be dynamic. The second half of the sane thing looks like a substantial
chunk of work, though.

It's not that big, but somebody has to focus on it.

I did not have to go too far for an example:

piix4_pm_realize() calls piix4_pm_add_propeties() and acpi_pcihp_init() and
piix4_acpi_system_hot_add_init() and these guys create
bool/uint8_ptr/uint16_ptr/uint32_ptr properties:

hw/acpi/piix4.c|477| object_property_add_uint8_ptr(OBJECT(s),
ACPI_PM_PROP_ACPI_ENABLE_CMD,
hw/acpi/piix4.c|479| object_property_add_uint8_ptr(OBJECT(s),
ACPI_PM_PROP_ACPI_DISABLE_CMD,
hw/acpi/piix4.c|481| object_property_add_uint32_ptr(OBJECT(s),
ACPI_PM_PROP_GPE0_BLK,
hw/acpi/piix4.c|483| object_property_add_uint32_ptr(OBJECT(s),
ACPI_PM_PROP_GPE0_BLK_LEN,
hw/acpi/piix4.c|485| object_property_add_uint16_ptr(OBJECT(s),
ACPI_PM_PROP_SCI_INT,
hw/acpi/piix4.c|487| object_property_add_uint32_ptr(OBJECT(s),
ACPI_PM_PROP_PM_IO_BASE,
hw/acpi/piix4.c|642| object_property_add_bool(OBJECT(s), "cpu-hotplug-legacy",

So I am putting the chunk below (cut-n-pasted from this thread) for each
command (i.e. twice) instead of my stuff and repost?

===
Objects can create properties at runtime, for example to describe
links between different devices and/or objects. These properties
are not included in the output of this command.

Thanks! Though that could be done in instance_init as well. ICH9
already does it that way.

Yes, please.
