Actually, perhaps we should not strive to do that. Because particularly if we expect that this will want to be back-ported into at least 4.14, maybe the right thing to do is to make _that_ as easy as possible, and make the whole series be based on 4.14 (so that back-porting is literally just "merge the branch"). If I start taking this piece-meal, it is just going to make the back-porting messier. Linus
