Hi,

Bottom line up front, built fsl-community-bsp dunfell for imx8mmevk and
Linux 5.4 kernel hangs on boot.

So far I've been NXP official releases. I really needed the 5.4 kernel so
was excited when I saw they did a release but just learned that their
releases are only for certain boards and not necessarily backward
compatible with older boards.

I learned the above after I built NXP Zeus 5.4 release of core-image-base
and put generated sdcard in my bare (I don't have video, touch screen etc.,
it's just a bare board that was a hand-me-down but works fine with Sumo
release) Rev B (sticker on the bottom) imx8mmevk board and the console
showed kernel hanging on boot.

So then I built the fsl-community-bsp version for imx8mmevk using both Poky
and fscl-wayland distros. I built core-image-minimal for poky and
core-image-base for fscl-wayland.

All three hang in the same place on boot. I'll copy and paste console
output below but does anyone have a clue why it's hanging? I suspect it's
because device tree is looking for something I don't have plugged up to the
board ... but I would think it should boot on a bare board like previous
versions did.

Thanks for any clues!

Regards,

Brian

Console output booting from sdcard ... This is fsl-community-bsp
core-image-base for fscl-wayland (but again, all three images I built did
the same thing):

I suspect it's because device tree is looking for something I don't have plugged up to the board ... but I would think it should boot on a bare board like previous versions did.

This kernel version does not match to what is currently present in the
[dufell] branch of community BSP. Current linux-fslc-imx version
included there is actually 5.4.51. Version 5.4.3 looks a rather NXP
"default" kernel to me...

Can you provide a Yocto build header, where it is seeing which layers

This looks to me like a timeout waiting for rootfs on the
/dev/mmcblk1p2, but I do not see in the log that mmc1 is even
initialized.

It could be that I didn't flash my sdcard right. I first tried the NXP
release which generates a sdcard image. Both of the fsl-community-bsp
builds I did generated a wic.gz image instead of a sdcard.bz2 image like
NXP does.

I simply unzipped the wic.gz image and did a dd to my sdcard. Hopefully
that's the right way to do it and I'm not still booting the original NXP
image from my first try. That would be embarrassing ;)

Brian

No sign of mmcblk1:p1 or p2

... and forgive my fsl-community-bsp n00b-ness.  When I unzipped the wic.gz it looked about the right size of a sdcard image so I just dd'd it.  After more inspection I see this .wks file in the deploy directory so I did this command wic create core-image-base-imx-imx-boot-bootpart.wks -e core-image-base which generated:

core-image-base-imx-imx-boot-bootpart-202007291817-mmcblk.direct
core-image-base-imx-imx-boot-bootpart-202007291817-mmcblk.direct.p0
core-image-base-imx-imx-boot-bootpart-202007291817-mmcblk.direct.p1
core-image-base-imx-imx-boot-bootpart-202007291817-mmcblk.direct.p2

The core-image-base-imx-imx-boot-bootpart-202007291817-mmcblk.direct file isn't quite the same size as the unzipped .wic but close.  So I assumed it was a complete sdcard imae and dd'd that and got same result.  Although it appears the .wks file has 3 partitions and when I put my sdcard in pc to look at it, I only see the traditional boot and root partitions so I'm not 100% convinced I'm making the sdcard right ... (it's weird how I never noticed the time/date stamps changing of u-boot & kernel between the 3 sdcard flash attempts ... well 4 now) and could still be using the original NXP image ... but if so, I sure would like to know what in the world dd is doing.

I'm sure I'm probably doing something stupid ... but I don't know what I don't know.

Regards,

Brian

Update.

I went into kernel config and gutted a bunch of setting for things I don't care about (wow ... 5.4 sure has a bunch of new stuff).  I turned off PCI, bluetooth, wifi etc.  I really think turning off PCI is what made it work after looking at device tree source.

I simply replaced Image on the sdcard.  Didn't mess with anything else.

Kernel boots now but systemd not happy so goes into emergency mode ... here is what it looks like now:

Brian,

I guess your SD Card image is corrupted during flashing, all log
details actually point to that fact.

This happens because rootfs partition cannot be mounted as it appears
to be corrupted, you can see the timeout down in your boot log.

This still puzzles me the most... How do you build your kernel? It
appears that you're using linux-imx kernel recipe, and not
linux-fslc-imx one. Also the build timestamp looks really odd, as it
should be at least in July - yours is still from February. Are you
sure you build the kernel and didn't take a stale binary instead?

This is also a strange part: you selected fslc-wayland distro, so you
should be having a linux-fslc kernel built. Instead, you have a
linux-imx kernel... Please inspect your distro/machine configs to see
if you're not re-defining the preferred provider and version for the
kernel package.

This is the timeout I was referring to above: MMC1 (SD Card) cannot be
initialized - no rootfs available for you. Systemd falls into
"recovery mode".

I don't think so.  The core-image-minimal image I built with poky as distro boots clean when I replace the kernel with the one where I went into make menuconfig and turned off PCI and some other things.  I think systemd just isn't happy with the core-image-base built with fslc-wayland distro as I have a plain, bare imx8mmevk ... normally that have video card, touch screen and other stuff hooked up to them ... so none of that stuff is started properly.

Well, when I changed the .config I just did bitbake -c clean virtual/kernel, bitbake -c menuconfig virtual/kernel, bitbake virtual/kernel then copy Image to FAT of SD Card.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I didn't do anything out of the ordinary so there must be an issue in the local.conf or a recipe somewhere.

Here is exactly what I did:

I made a directory for Freescale Community BSP for Poky core-image-minimal and another directory for core-image-base fslc-wayland build.

In both directories I followed instructions on the Freescale Community BSP web site:

repo init -u https://github.com/Freescale/fsl-community-bsp-platform -b dunfell
repo sync

In one directory I ran:

MACHINE=imx8mmevk DISTRO=fslc-wayland source setup-environment build

In the other I ran:

MACHINE=imx8mmevk DISTRO=poky source setup-environment build

For fslc-wayland distro I then ran bitbake core-image-base without changing a thing in bblayers.conf or local.conf

For poky distro I ran bitbake core-image-minimal without changing a thing in bblayers.conf or local.conf

I then used the same SD Card and flashed both resulting images and tried them and both hung in same spot.

I suspected device tree or kernel config issues so I rebuilt kernel and replaced the Image in FAT partition.  That's the only change I made, then board booted the core-image-base image and systemd went into emergency mode (the logs I posted).

I then used same SD Card and dd core-image-minimal image and again replaced the Image in FAT partition with kernel I did menuconfig on to turn off PCI, wifi, graphics etc. and it booted up super clean with no issues at all (Sys V init, now systemd).  Again, all I changed in both cases was the kernel.

So if I'm not getting the right kernel, maybe I need a Preferred provider in my local.conf (but shouldn't that be there to start with if that's the case?).  All I did was follow the web site instructions then set off building and flashing and testing.

Don't know what that's about but /dev/mmcblk1p2 is mounted or systemd would not be running right now!  And what is /dev/mmcblkp1 supposed to be anyway?  Looks like typeo to me.  Should be referring to /dev/mmcblk1p1 or /dev/mmcblk1p2

I have the same problem. imx8mmevk does not boot with Yocto Dunfell.
Booting stops at "PCIe PLL lock timeout" or "Initialized imx-drm 1.0.0
20120507 for soc@0:bus@32c00000:display-subsystem on minor 0". I tried
booting from MMC and from NFS, and neither work.

Could you guys open an issue on github about this?

Do you have a revB board?

If so, please use imx8mm-evk-revb.dtb instead as there is a difference
between revB versus revC that is related to the PCIe clock source.

From arch/arm64/boot/dts/freescale/imx8mm-evk-revb.dts:

/*
 * External OSC is used as PCIe REFCLK on RevC board.
 * Use the -revb.dts file to distiguish the different
 * HW design.
 */
&pcie0{
ext_osc = <0>;
status = "okay";
};

Could U-Boot load the correct dtb for the board revision?

Unfortunately, this cannot be determined in run-time.

When the sdcard is created, the u-boot environment has fdt_file defaulted to imx8mm-evk.dtb.  I've not yet figured out how to override the recipe to specify which .dtb file should be used.  For sdcard boot, all of the .dtb's are on the FAT partition of the sdcard so it's easy enough to change the filename to use.

I use SPI NOR so I just have the .dtb file burned into a specific address so the name doesn't matter in that case.

Regards,

Brian

You can try to do something like this in your layer via creating a
u-boot-imx_%.bbapend:

patch_uboot_defconfig () {
    sed -i -e '/^[       ]*CONFIG_DEFAULT_FDT_FILE[      ]*=/d' ${S}/configs/$1
    echo 'CONFIG_DEFAULT_FDT_FILE="'$2'"' >>${S}/configs/$1
}

do_configure_prepend_imx8mmevk () {
    patch_uboot_defconfig imx8mm_evk_defconfig  imx8mm-evk-revb.dtb
}

NOTE: This is not the most clean solution on how to approach the
setting of U-Boot DTB and would (most probably) break reproducibility.
You can use it to see what should be changed, and try out if that
would solve the PCIe hang during boot. Also: "For verification
purposes ONLY!". :)

Ha, ha, I figured there was already some way to do it and I just overlooked it or wasn't smart enough to figure it out.  Yeah, you can do anything with good ole sed.

I plan to switch back to using the original .config and try the rev B .dtb to see if that fixes things when I get a chance.
