Hi,
  I think you are on the right track.  Are you able to run the board using
the mainline kernel? If so we could try the current 5.4 and see if we see
the interrupt come through.  I do have an imx8 board here but I won't be
able to get that going till the end of the week.  I know Philippe has run
dovetail with the imx8, another option would be to try running dovetail
with Xenomai.  Another option would be to capture an ftrace on the 4.14
kernel and on the 5.4 and we can compare to see what we are missing.  It's
not obvious to me what is missing.
