yes it works. I had the same problem until i realised that i hadn't
CONFIG_INPUT_PCSPKR in my kernel
here is the relevant part from my config (comments stripped)

CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_SCREEN_X=1024

CONFIG_SERIO=y
CONFIG_SERIO_I8042=y

CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSE=y
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2=y
