Here are the topics that have been cooking in my tree. Commits
prefixed with '+' are in 'next' (being in 'next' is a sign that a
topic is stable enough to be used and are candidate to be in a
future release). Commits prefixed with '-' are only in 'seen',
which means nothing more than that I have found them of interest for
some reason (like "it may have hard-to-resolve conflicts with
another topic already in flight" or "this may turn out to be
useful"). Do not read too much into a topic being in (or not in)
'seen'. The ones marked with '.' do not appear in any of the
integration branches, but I am still holding onto them.

Git 2.33-rc2 will be tagged tomorrow, with a few build and
regression fixes (not in 'master' yet as of this writing).

Copies of the source code to Git live in many repositories, and the
following is a list of the ones I push into or their mirrors. Some
repositories have only a subset of branches.

With maint, master, next, seen, todo:

	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git/
	git://repo.or.cz/alt-git.git/
	https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/git/git/
	https://github.com/git/git/
	https://gitlab.com/git-vcs/git/

With all the integration branches and topics broken out:

	https://github.com/gitster/git/

Even though the preformatted documentation in HTML and man format
are not sources, they are published in these repositories for
convenience (replace "htmldocs" with "manpages" for the manual
pages):

	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git-htmldocs.git/

[New Topics]

* cb/builtin-merge-format-string-fix (2021-08-09) 1 commit
 - builtin/merge: avoid -Wformat-extra-args from ancient Xcode

 Code clean-up.

 Will merge to 'next'.

* cb/many-alternate-optim-fixup (2021-08-09) 2 commits
  (merged to 'next' on 2021-08-09 at 3572bef349)
 + object-store: avoid extra ';' from KHASH_INIT
 + oidtree: avoid nested struct oidtree_node
 (this branch is used by cb/ci-build-pedantic.)

 Build fix.

 Will merge to 'master'.

* ka/want-ref-in-namespace (2021-08-09) 3 commits
 - docs: clarify the interaction of transfer.hideRefs and namespaces
 - upload-pack.c: treat want-ref relative to namespace
 - t5730: introduce fetch command helper

 "git upload-pack" which runs on the other side of "git fetch"
 forgot to take the ref namespaces into account when handling
 want-ref requests.

* np/blame-ignore-revs-file-may-be-optional (2021-08-09) 1 commit
 - blame: add config `blame.ignoreRevsFileIsOptional`

 When the file named by blame.ignoreRevsFile configuration variable
 does not exist, it causes "git blame" to die. Sometimes, it is
 useful if the files named by configuration variables can be made
 optional (it would allow ~/.gitconfig to give a filename, and make
 it effective only in repositories that have a file with that name).

 This uses an extra variable that marks that the variable is
 optional. Yet another alternative is being discussed to define
 syntax for "optional" filename values, so that the same mechanism
 can be used for not just blame.ignoreRevsFile but other filenames.

 Queued just as a reminder of the theme.

* cb/ci-build-pedantic (2021-08-09) 1 commit
 - ci: run a pedantic build as part of the GitHub workflow
 (this branch uses cb/many-alternate-optim-fixup.)

 CI update.

 Will merge to 'next'.

* jn/log-m-does-not-imply-p (2021-08-09) 1 commit
  (merged to 'next' on 2021-08-09 at d937d09924)
 + Revert 'diff-merges: let "-m" imply "-p"'

 Earlier "git log -m" was changed to always produce patch output,
 which would break existing scripts, which has been reverted.

 Will merge to 'master'.

* ds/sparse-index-ignored-files (2021-08-10) 9 commits
 - sparse-checkout: clear tracked sparse dirs
 - sparse-index: add SPARSE_INDEX_IGNORE_CONFIG flag
 - attr: be careful about sparse directories
 - sparse-checkout: create helper methods
 - unpack-trees: fix nested sparse-dir search
 - sparse-index: silently return when cache tree fails
 - sparse-index: silently return when not using cone-mode patterns
 - t7519: rewrite sparse index test
 - Merge branch 'ds/add-with-sparse-index' into ds/sparse-index-ignored-files
 (this branch uses ds/add-with-sparse-index.)

 In cone mode, the sparse-index codepath learned to remove ignored
 files (like build artifacts) outside the sparse cone, allowing the
 entire directory outside the sparse cone to be removed, which is
 especially useful when the sparse patterns change.

* jc/userdiff-pattern-hint (2021-08-10) 1 commit
 - userdiff: comment on the builtin patterns

 Remind developers that the userdiff patterns should be kept simple
 and permissive, assuming that the contents they apply are always
 syntactically correct.

* jk/apply-binary-hunk-parsing-fix (2021-08-10) 1 commit
 - apply: keep buffer/size pair in sync when parsing binary hunks

 "git apply" miscounted the bytes and failed to read to the end of
 binary hunks.

 Will merge to 'next'.

* jk/range-diff-fixes (2021-08-10) 3 commits
 - range-diff: use ssize_t for parsed "len" in read_patches()
 - range-diff: handle unterminated lines in read_patches()
 - range-diff: drop useless "offset" variable from read_patches()

 "git range-diff" code clean-up.

 Will merge to 'next'.

* js/advise-when-skipping-cherry-picked (2021-08-10) 2 commits
 - SQUASH???
 - sequencer: advise if skipping cherry-picked commit

 "git rebase" by default skips changes that are equivalent to
 commits that are already in the history the branch is rebased onto;
 give messages when this happens to let the users be aware of
 skipped commits, and also teach them how to tell "rebase" to keep
 duplicated changes.

* jt/grep-wo-submodule-odb-as-alternate (2021-08-10) 7 commits
 - t7814: show lack of alternate ODB-adding
 - grep: add repository to OID grep sources
 - grep: allocate subrepos on heap
 - grep: read submodule entry with explicit repo
 - grep: typesafe versions of grep_source_init
 - grep: use submodule-ODB-as-alternate lazy-addition
 - submodule: lazily add submodule ODBs as alternates

 The code to make "git grep" recurse into submodules has been
 updated to migrate away from the "add submodule's object store as
 an alternate object store" mechanism (which is suboptimal).

--------------------------------------------------
[Stalled]

* gh/gitweb-branch-sort (2021-06-10) 1 commit
 - gitweb: use HEAD as secondary sort key in git_get_heads_list()

 Tie-break branches that point at the same object in the list of
 branches on GitWeb to show the one pointed at by HEAD early.

 Waiting for reviews.

* lh/systemd-timers (2021-07-02) 3 commits
 - maintenance: add support for systemd timers on Linux
 - maintenance: `git maintenance run` learned `--scheduler=<scheduler>`
 - cache.h: Introduce a generic "xdg_config_home_for(…)" function

 "git maintenance" scheduler learned to use systemd timers as a
 possible backend.

 Waiting for reviews.

 - completion: bash: add correct suffix in variables
 - completion: bash: fix for multiple dash commands

 Expecting a reroll.
 cf. <60be6f7fa4435_db80d208f2@natae.notmuch>

 - submodule: cache superproject gitdir during 'update'
 - submodule: cache superproject gitdir during absorbgitdirs
 - introduce submodule.superprojectGitDir cache
 - t7400-submodule-basic: modernize inspect() helper

 A configuration variable in a submodule points at the location of

* ao/p4-avoid-decoding (2021-04-12) 2 commits
 - git-p4: do not decode data from perforce by default
 - git-p4: avoid decoding more data from perforce

 "git p4" in Python-2 days used to accept a lot more kinds of data
 from Perforce server as uninterrupted byte sequence, but after
 switching to Python-3, too many things are expected to be in UTF-8,
 which broke traditional use cases.

 Waiting for reviews.

* tv/p4-fallback-encoding (2021-04-30) 1 commit
 - git-p4: git-p4.fallbackEncoding to specify non UTF-8 charset

 "git p4" learns the fallbackEncoding configuration variable to
 safely accept changeset descriptions that aren't written in UTF-8.

 Waiting for reviews.

 Loading of ref tips to prepare for common ancestry negotiation in
 "git fetch-pack" has been optimized by taking advantage of the
 commit graph when available.

 - revision: avoid hitting packfiles when commits are in commit-graph
 - commit-graph: split out function to search commit position
 - revision: stop retrieving reference twice

 tested; this has been rewritten in C.

 Will cook in 'next'.

* jc/trivial-threeway-binary-merge (2021-07-28) 1 commit
 - ll-merge: teach ll_binary_merge() a trivial three-way merge

 The built-in merge driver for binary files learned to resolve
 trivial three-way merges (e.g. apply change, which turns A into B,
 to content A) by itself, which would help "git apply --3way" used
 when there is no need to use "--3way".

 Will discard.
 Replace with a trivial-merge logic in apply.c::try_treeway() or
 apply.c::three_way_merge().

* ab/http-drop-old-curl (2021-07-30) 5 commits

 "git pull" had various corner cases that were not well thought out
 around its --rebase backend, e.g. "git pull --ff-only" did not stop
 but went ahead and rebased when the history on other side is not a
 descendant of our history. The series tries to fix them up.

 span across multiple packfiles.

I haven't had time to look at this recently, so I'd suggest dropping it

Anything i can do to help this along?
I don't think there are any more open review issues but i'm of course
open to new ones ;)
I do have a minimal change (initially i used git_config_string instead
of _pathname for the allowedSigners and revocation files) that i could
submit in a new version to bump it up but not really anything else.

I do have a few follow up todos that i'd like to start working on. But
i'm not sure if thats a good idea when the base functionality might
still change.

My roadmap for this feature:
 - check/fix usage of gpg-interface:check_signature. some call sites
currently ignore its exit code and unconditionally dereference signature
check results :/ - This could probably be done right now.

 - rename "gpg." options (sign. ?) and make documentation clear that
signing is no longer limited to gpg. (backwards compatible of course)

 - rename gpg-interface (signing.h|c ?) and at least some of its api
code to be less gpg specific to make developers aware that this code not
only deals with gpg anymore

 - implement ssh's new verify-time so we can verify commits in the past.
With git i only need to trust the key up to the commit timestamp. Unless
its is revoked specifically i don't mind if it expires and i don't want
to invalidate a developers commits just because they change their key.
The old commit should still verify. This is not really possible with gpg
unless people renew/extend and then distribute their existing keys.

 - Add a config option to fix the ssh signing principal to the
committers email address instead of looking it up by the signatures
public key (this is required for the next feature)

 - Allow "Trust on first use". Corporate environments and forges can
easily roll their own allowedSigners file based on the user data they
already have (and even distribute this file to their users). Other
workflows (email based patches) make this file much harder to maintain.
If we use the committers email as principal to look up their key we can
add it automatically, or ask the user similar to a first ssh connection
if we should add it to our local allowedSigners file if not found. Only
a change of keys is a problematic operation and needs to be monitored /
verified manually (not sure how we would handle this yet). Something
like this was already suggested here: https://lwn.net/Articles/803619/

 - add patch signing & verification to format-patch & am. Since ssh
signatures are rather small we could probably append them to the patches
somehow. This needs some planning since it's probably easy to break
peoples scripts/workflows if not careful.

this version has the bug you reported[1] and provided a fix for
because the base image doesn't include git, and while the bug is
harmless it is still silly enough that should be worth fixing
before going to next IMHO..

I was preparing a version 2 reroll that included the tests, as
you suggested, which I was also planning to make a little more
useful by including other test dependencies missing from other jobs.

on that line, I also forgot to build with PCRE, which was the reason
why it was included as a dependency, and that has been corrected as
well; alternatively it could be removed and make the job slightly faster.

but if you want to have a less buggy and even faster job[2] in next
meanwhile could use instead the "1.5" reroll below which will be also
easier to base on for v2; alternatively it could wait, but was also
tempted to include UBsan in this job, and so it would need additional
fixes before it can be promoted in that case

Subject: [PATCH v1.5] ci: run a pedantic build as part of the GitHub workflow

similar to the recently added sparse task, it is nice to know as early
as possible.

add a dockerized build using fedora (that usually has the latest gcc)
to be ahead of the curve and avoid older ISO C issues at the same time.

I think the midx patch wants to be dropped cf.

Sorry I missed this going into next, I thought the conclusion was to
drop these[1] in favor of[2]

Kaartic Sivaraam had sent a patch to fix a cosmetic bug introduced by my
add-clone conversion series which has already been merged to master:

https://lore.kernel.org/git/20210805192803.679948-1-kaartic.sivaraam@gmail.com/

I think it will be re-rolled soon. Just wanted to ensure this did not
get lost among the other topics.

These descriptions end up in the release notes, right? If so:

Will mark it as "expecting a reroll". I do not think we are in a
hurry for this step, even though, as I said, we would probably want
to have the two other changes in the upcoming release.

Sounds good. We are not in a hurry for anything that may go into
'next' at this stage. A version that you think will help us start
the cycle after this one well would be desirable.

Thanks.

comment as such.

Thanks again. Let's make sure the "better advice message" will be
the approach we'll take in the next cycle.

That link says "Merge branch 'fs/ssh-signing' into seen" -- that's not my branch.

That one was for 913a4aa7e46 which had not just fs/ssh-signing but also

Thank you both.
Perhaps as Phillip said, this optimization can also be applied to git revert.
