dmesg out from amdgpu freeze

RX560, Ryzen 1700X, MSI B350 Tomawhawk

Complete freezes a few times a day. Seems to typically be when the monitors
are being woken from sleep, but not always. I have three monitors connected,
one each via: displayport, hdmi and dvi (gpu) to hdmi (monitor). The mouse
cursor will still move, but clicking doesn't have any affect, keyboard doesn't
work, can't switch to virtual terminals, numlock light frozen.

I believe this may be related to the new AMD DC that was enabled by default for
all GPU as of 4.17. I have disabled it via amdgpu.dc=0 in the boot parameters
and I will report back.

Updated, using amdgpu.dc=0 had no effect, still crashes every 1-2 days,
sometimes in just a few hours. Seems to happen most frequently when waking up,
specifically the monitor attached via displayport.

Is there any other information I can provide to help diagnose? I'm not even
sure if I have this bug filed in the right place.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate you taking the time to look into this.

This system was 100% stable for months, but somewhere around 4.17.X the issue
started and has persisted through several kernel upgrades.

I will try compiling 4.18.5 and see if I have better luck.

Thanks again. I'll report back if I have any more information after installing
a newer kernel.

Upgraded to 4.18.5 and have been running that since 8/29. I've had the same
amount of freezing, but no more errors in the journal. This morning it was a
complete freeze while using Firefox. Nothing of interest in the logs that I
could find. The last message prior to freeze this time was dnf-automatic
attempting to update the cache, so I went ahead and disabled that to test. I
checked the log during previous freezes and this wasn't present, so I doubt it
will be the culprit.

Not sure how to troubleshoot further. I've run memtest and stress-ng and
cannot replicate the problem. No freezing or errors reported by memtest. CPU
temperatures seem good (Tdie is 28C idle and 42C under load).

This time it froze completely, mouse wouldn't move, numlock light stuck on,
audio was playing and started producing garbled output until I pressed the
reset switch on the pc.

Still frequent freezing. Two so far today, one time everything froze but audio
from youtube in firefox continued to play. Numlock light frozen on keyboard,
no input would work from mouse, etc, but audio continued. The second that just
happened was a freeze, no input from mouse, can't switch to virtual terminal,
but can still move mouse cursor around the screen(s). I'm using three
monitors: one display port, one hdmi and one dvi-d with an rx 560.

I've noticed the displayport monitor takes the longest to wake up and also
sometimes it will freeze during wake up.

Does adding idle=nomwait on the kernel command line in grub help?

Just had another crash. Moved the mouse to wake it from sleep, hdmi and dvi-d
monitors came on, displayport monitor never did, mouse frozen and num lock
light frozen on keyboard. I was able to still ping the computer, but couldn't
ssh. It timed out eventually but oddly enough an nmap showed the port open.

Here's the output directly before the reboot from journalctl. Running the same
4.18.5 kernel and the cmdline from my previous post.

Last night I installed a new m.2 SSD. Installed a fresh copy of Fedora 28
Workstation and ran all updates then locked the screen. Came back this morning
and computer was frozen again. I will post the logs again this evening when I
can get back to the computer.

Richard Smith (smithrm@gmx.co.uk) changed:

           What |Removed |Added

                 CC| |smithrm@gmx.co.uk

--- Comment #17 from Richard Smith (smithrm@gmx.co.uk) ---
I'd like to report that I, too, am experiencing the exact same issue.

I've found that a workaround is to use the boot parameter "amdgpu.dpm=0", but
the downside is that your GPU fan will be running constantly.

My monitor, too, is connected via display port to a Vega 64 graphics card.

Steps to reproduce:
-------------------

* Simply manually power the monitor off and back on again.

Alternatively:

* Lock desktop, wait for monitor to sleep. Then, move the mouse or press any
keyboard key and observe that the screen remains black until you reboot.

Both of these reproduce the issue 100% of the time.

Kernels with this issue:
------------------------

4.18.6 (my current kernel)
4.17.17

Last kernel without this issue:
-------------------------------

4.17.14

Other observations:
-------------------

For me, the system doesn't completely lock up. Once the issue has occurred, I
can switch to a TTY with my keyboard (though screen remains blank) and trigger
a reboot via CTRL + ALT + DEL.

According to this Debian bug report, the issue may be due to the latest edition
of the GPU firmware:

So this is interesting. I'm still getting these errors occasionally but the
computer hasn't frozen in a day (1d 13h, specifically). Sometimes it will make
it two or even three days without a total freeze, but that's pretty rare.

This time I'm running a fresh install of Fedora 28 with the Fedora 4.18.4-200
kernel. I see that 4.18.7-200 is available in the fedora 28 repos, so I'll
install that and if it crashes again I'll try that one. I'm pretty certain the
problem is in the amdgpu driver, so I'm just hoping for an update at some point
that resolves the issue.

I wanted to add some additional information. I had a freeze the other day and
all audio continued, both the microphone and speaker output continued to
function but X was totally frozen and I could not switch to a virtual terminal.

I've also noticed that of my three monitors attached via the single video card,
the displayport monitor takes exactly 5 seconds longer to wake up than the
other two.

After upgrading to 4.18.8 it certainly seems more stable. Normally an uptime
of about two to three days was the best I could hope for. Current uptime is
just shy of six days.

--- Comment #28 from Richard Smith (smithrm@gmx.co.uk) ---
I think the problem may have been Wayland related because, following an update
to Wayland this morning, the issue no longer happens for me. I'm still running
the same kernel as in my previous posts so, for me at least, it doesn't seem to
be a kernel problem.

I'm sorry if I have wasted anybody's time.

Scratch that, it is actually still happening. For some reason, I was able to
lock Gnome, let my monitor sleep, and then successfully resume. However, the
problem returned on a subsequent locking of the desktop. Sorry!

After upgrading to 4.8.18 I believe this issue is resolved for me. My current
uptime is >7 days. I had to reboot about a week ago but before that it was
also >7 days. Normally it would crash within 2-3 days.

I think this has been resolved. Uptime at this point is 8 days so I think
somewhere around 4.18.8 this was resvoled.
