If you're experiencing GPU lockups w/ OpenCL, I'd recommend making sure that you mesa includes: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=4539f8e20af286d1f521eb016c89c6d9af0b801c This fixed a lot of common CL-based lockups on my Radeon 6850.
