Please attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and the output of d= mesg and glxinfo.
Does it also happen with Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If yes, can you try a newer version of Mesa?
@Michel D=C3=A4nzer my xorg.conf is empty. if i add your lines the complete screen turns black = the next time i login making kubuntu unusable. not keen to mess arround with mesa drivers, as i have kde plasma next insta= lled next to kde 4 and need kde4 for work. or is this update available through the update center?

Sounds like you didn't create a valid xorg.conf. Something like this should work: Section "Device" Identifier "default" Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" EndSection > or is this update available through the update c= enter? No idea, but there are PPAs.

@Michel D=C3=A4nzer the problem remains. in the meantime i have updated my kde plasma next via kubuntu ppa's like i am doing everyday, and while the content in the xorg.= conf remains the same, i now have the black screen again :( next stop mesa drivers? could you tell me what exactly do i have look for in the ppa's as this seem= s to be a custom install and not included in the updates.

i can reproduce the crash now sometimes.
basically i am playing arround with the various items in system settings, open
close them, re open them, open a new one, etc. sometimes after 5, sometimes
after 10 it crashes. and on some i have the infamous black screen.
Can you get another crash dump with debugging symbols for /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r600_dri.so ?
