ath9k does support ad-hoc mode (IBSS mode under Modes of Operation:
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k).

Use `iw` to change the mode (e.g., set your card to ad-hoc mode):
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Documentation/iw
