This is almost identical set of patches recently done for s390.

With this, user can run perf trace without libaudit on powerpc
as well. Ex,

  $ make
    ...     libaudit: [ OFF ]

  $ ./perf trace ls
    0.221 ( 0.005 ms): ls/43330 open(filename: 0xac1e2778, flags: CLOEXEC   ) = 3
    0.227 ( 0.003 ms): ls/43330 read(fd: 3, buf: 0x3ffff9c4d678, count: 832 ) = 832
    0.233 ( 0.002 ms): ls/43330 fstat(fd: 3, statbuf: 0x3ffff9c4d4b0        ) = 0
    ...

  $ ./perf trace -e "open*" ls
    0.000 ( 0.014 ms): ls/43342 open(filename: 0x793d8978, flags: CLOEXEC   ) = 3
    0.038 ( 0.006 ms): ls/43342 open(filename: 0x793f2778, flags: CLOEXEC   ) = 3
    ...

Will be used for generating the syscall id/string translation table.

This should speed up accessing new system calls introduced with
the kernel rather than waiting for libaudit updates to include
them.

This should speed up accessing new system calls introduced with the
kernel rather than waiting for libaudit updates to include them.

It also enables users to specify wildcards, for example, perf trace -e
'open*', just like was already possible on x86 and s390.

This is so cool! Thanks!

At some point we'll remove these #elif, have all of then linked, so that
we can do cross-platform interpreting of perf.data files generated with
'perf trace record', i.e. 'perf trace -i perf.data.recorded.on.s390' on
a powerpc64 or x86 machine.

We're paving the way to that with patches like yours and those for
s/390, thanks again!

Ah, I already had to update the unistd.h copy to catch some new syscalls
for s/390 :-)

So, you did it just for ppc64? Because...

  46    29.83 ubuntu:16.04-x-powerpc        : FAIL powerpc-linux-gnu-gcc (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.4) 5.4.0 20160609

Its just on ppc32 that his is falling apart.

So, $(SRCARCH) maps to both powerpc and powerpc64m which will set
NO_SYSCALL_TABLE to zero, thus linking against
tools/perf/util/syscalltbl.o, which will include the generated
syscalls_64.c only for ppc64, b00m.

Ok, so after looking at:

commit eef289f79c03ba5ca197e2ac1e33906175f01c39
Author: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
Date:   Mon Oct 10 22:56:11 2005 +1000

    powerpc: Merge asm/unistd.h

    Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

----

Humm, we need to create two tables, one for 32-bit and another for 64,
even with ppc not having (AFAIK) clashes in syscall numbers for 32/64...

Trying to do it now.

Oops.. Really sorry about that.

I've tested acme/perf/core on ubuntu ppc32 with and without libaudit-dev
and it's working fine.

Thank you very much for fixing it,
Ravi

tools include powerpc: Grab a copy of arch/powerpc/include/uapi/asm/unistd.h

Will be used for generating the syscall id/string translation table.

Committer notes:

Update it already to catch with these csets applied since Ravi first
submitted this patch:

  3350eb2ea127 powerpc: sys_pkey_mprotect() system call
  9499ec1b5e82 powerpc: sys_pkey_alloc() and sys_pkey_free() system calls

So now 'perf trace' on ppc now knows about the pkey_ syscals.

perf powerpc: Generate system call table from asm/unistd.h

This should speed up accessing new system calls introduced with the
kernel rather than waiting for libaudit updates to include them.

perf trace powerpc: Use generated syscall table

This should speed up accessing new system calls introduced with the
kernel rather than waiting for libaudit updates to include them.

It also enables users to specify wildcards, for example, perf trace -e
'open*', just like was already possible on x86 and s390.

LGTM. Thanks for fixing this up.

cheers
