Here are the topics that have been cooking in my tree. Commits
prefixed with '+' are in 'next' (being in 'next' is a sign that a
topic is stable enough to be used and are candidate to be in a future
release). Commits prefixed with '-' are only in 'seen', and aren't
considered "accepted" at all. A topic without enough support may be
discarded after a long period of no activity.

We are in the middle of the week #6 of a 12-week cycle (cf.
https://tinyurl.com/gitCal).

Copies of the source code to Git live in many repositories, and the
following is a list of the ones I push into or their mirrors. Some
repositories have only a subset of branches.

With maint, master, next, seen, todo:

	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git/
	git://repo.or.cz/alt-git.git/
	https://kernel.googlesource.com/pub/scm/git/git/
	https://github.com/git/git/
	https://gitlab.com/git-vcs/git/

With all the integration branches and topics broken out:

	https://github.com/gitster/git/

Even though the preformatted documentation in HTML and man format
are not sources, they are published in these repositories for
convenience (replace "htmldocs" with "manpages" for the manual
pages):

	git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git-htmldocs.git/
	https://github.com/gitster/git-htmldocs.git/

Release tarballs are available at:

	https://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/

* en/ancestry-path-in-a-range (2022-08-17) 2 commits
 - revision: allow --ancestry-path to take an argument
 - rev-list-options.txt: fix simple typo

 "git rev-list --ancestry-path=C A..B" is a natural extension of
"git rev-list A..B"; instead of choosing a subset of A..B to those
that have ancestry relationship with A, it lets a subset with
 ancestry relationship with C.

(merged to 'next' on 2022-08-14 at 3873a83f90)
 + rev-list: support human-readable output for `--disk-usage`

"git rev-list --disk-usage" learned to take an optional value
"human" to show the reported value in human-readable format, like
 "3.40MiB".

(merged to 'next' on 2022-08-14 at 637d458d9c)

repositories; a configuration knob for users to override this has
 been introduced.

(merged to 'next' on 2022-08-17 at 96033ff88d)

* pw/rebase-keep-base-fixes (2022-08-15) 5 commits
 - rebase --keep-base: imply --no-fork-point
 - rebase --keep-base: imply --reapply-cherry-picks
 - rebase: factor out merge_base calculation
 - rebase: store orig_head as a commit
 - t3416: set $EDITOR in subshell

"git rebase --keep-base" used to discard the commits that are
already cherry-picked to the upstream, even when "keep-base" meant
that the base, on top of which the history is being rebuilt, does
not yet include these cherry-picked commits. The --keep-base
option now implies --reapply-cherry-picks and --no-fork-point
 options.

 Needs review.

* jk/fsck-tree-mode-bits-fix (2022-08-10) 3 commits
(merged to 'next' on 2022-08-11 at 219fe53025)
+ fsck: downgrade tree badFilemode to "info"
+ fsck: actually detect bad file modes in trees
 + tree-walk: add a mechanism for getting non-canonicalized modes

"git fsck" reads mode from tree objects but canonicalizes the mode
before passing it to the logic to check object sanity, which has
hid broken tree objects from the checking logic. This has been
corrected, but to help exiting projects with broken tree objects
that they cannot fix retroactively, the severity of anomalies this
code detects has been demoted to "info" for now.

 Will merge to 'master'.

Final bits of "git bisect.sh" have been rewritten in C.

The msgid here is typo'd, the correct one is
https://lore.kernel.org/git/220627.86ilolhnnn.gmgdl@evledraar.gmail.com/
(i.e. a "2" is missing from the front).

The more recent
https://lore.kernel.org/git/220817.86pmgzabv0.gmgdl@evledraar.gmail.com/
also has some more follow-up, and a proposed fix-up for one of the
issues I noted with the series (the completion helper interaction with
the new "bisect").

This is interesting, that Scalar doesn't recognize a bare repo. There are
definitely some config settings that it recommends that don't make sense
in a bare repo, but it's interesting that it completely ignores it. Good
find.

I'm not sure there is anything to 'fix' except maybe error out when the
discovered Git repository is bare. Add a warning, at minimum.

This is interesting, that we can't recognize the ceiling as the root.

I think the enlistment root was something that was inherited from VFS for
Git, and we can mostly abandon it. The things we need to do are all based
on the Git repository itself, not the parent. The only thing we need to
keep is to allow a user to specify the repo by pointing to the directory
immediately above the 'src' directory.

Instead, we could do the following on a specified <dir>:

 * If <dir>/src exists, find the Git directory by finding the first Git
   repository containing <dir>/src.
 * Otherwise, find the first Git repository containing <dir>.

Is there an easy way to discover a Git repository at a specific directory?
Or, do we do something simpler, like changing directories then calling
setup_git_directory()? I think simplifying the logic that way should
respect GIT_CEILING_DIRECTORIES correctly.

This series has been stable for a while. Please consider merging it
to 'next' when you are ready.

I have part 3 ready to go when this is merged. It will cover the
parsing of bundle lists through the existing 'git clone --bundle-uri'
option.

I think earlier rounds of this series were fairly well reviewed and
the interdiff in the cover letter has nothing questionable.

This one I am not as confident as the other one, though. I actually
was thinking that this may be getting stale, not stable, without any
further "I read it once again and this round looks good" X-<. Let
me see if I can find time to read it over before I decide.

Thanks.

I think the review on this has stabilized (and, personally, I'm happy with

(I reviewed a newer version than what's currently in

This looks good. I would have rewritten the last sentence of patch 2's
commit message as "Initialize it instead to the generic
CONFLICT_SUBMODULE_FAILED_TO_MERGE value. There is no change to
user-visible behavior, as the only time this variable is read is when
printing submodule conflict information, which special-cases
CONFLICT_SUBMODULE_NOT_INITIALIZED and
CONFLICT_SUBMODULE_HISTORY_NOT_AVAILABLE, and treats everything else
identically.", but the existing commit message is fine too.

So now we should also include changes for the completion into this patch
series? Are you serious?

Ciao,
Johannes

The proposed fix-up is for a part of git.c that only exists with your
series applied.

Before your series "git bisect--helper" supported
"--git-completion-helper" (although not to do anything useful in
practice).

With your series we have a "bisect" built-in. Built-ins by default claim
to support "--git-completion-helper", but as your series also migrated
the code away from parse_options() it doesn't anymore.

So it makes sense for the relevant patch(es) to update the corresponding
flag as that's changed, see also the in-flight 68494127d6c (git.c:
update NO_PARSEOPT markings, 2022-07-25).
