git --version: git version 2.23.0

	% git push --\?
	error: unknown option `?'
	usage: git push [<options>] [<repository> [<refspec>...]]

	[snip]

	    --recurse-submodules[=(check|on-demand|no)]
	                          control recursive pushing of submodules

I read this as saying that the argument to recurse-submodules is optional.  However,

	% git push --recurse-submodules
	fatal: recurse-submodules missing parameter
	zsh: exit 128   git push --recurse-submodules

Manual page (git push --help) seems to indicate that argument to recurse-submodules is required.

I'm guessing it's just the command help that's incorrect.

When the usage for `git push` is shown, it includes the following
lines

	--recurse-submodules[=(check|on-demand|no)]
			      control recursive pushing of submodules

which seem to indicate that the argument for --recurse-submodules is
optional. However, we cannot actually run that optiion without an
argument:

	$ git push --recurse-submodules
	fatal: recurse-submodules missing parameter

Unset PARSE_OPT_OPTARG so that it is clear that this option requires an
argument. Since the parse-options machinery guarantees that an argument
is present now, assume that `arg` is set in the else of
option_parse_recurse_submodules().

Yeah, I think this is the right solution. It looks like it was broken
since the option was introduced in d2b17b3220 (push: Don't push a
repository with unpushed submodules, 2011-08-20).

I wondered if it was copied from another similar option in another
command, and if so whether that option had the same problem. But it
doesn't look like it. The other --recurse-submodules options are all
PARSE_OPT_OPTARG, but they actually do something useful when they are
not given an option (they turn it to "on").

I don't know enough about the "push" case to say whether it would be a
good idea for it to behave similarly, but certainly your patch is an
improvement until somebody decides to look into it.

What a lousy diff. It would be much easier to read if we chose to
replace the "else" and keep the big complicated line intact. :)

Obviously not a complaint about your patch. I'm always just curious to
see cases where the various diff implementations do better or worse than
each other.

I would prefer to see OPT_CALLBACK() used; it would send a strong
signal that this place is using the canned bog-standard and boring
pattern, and nothing fancy is going on.

In the codebase, there are many options which use OPTION_CALLBACK in a
plain ol' struct definition. However, we have the OPT_CALLBACK and
OPT_CALLBACK_F macros which are meant to abstract these plain struct
definitions away. These macros are useful as they semantically signal to
developers that these are just normal callback option with nothing fancy
happening.

Replace plain struct definitions of OPTION_CALLBACK with OPT_CALLBACK or
OPT_CALLBACK_F where applicable. The heavy lifting was done using the
following (disgusting) shell script:

The result was manually inspected and then reformatted to match the
style of the surrounding code. Finally, using
`git grep OPTION_CALLBACK \*.c`, leftover results which were not handled
by the script were manually transformed.

I didn't really like the idea of just changing this one case while
leaving the many other cases behind so I spent a bit of time coming up
with a more general solution that should hopefully fix this problem in
all the cases where this is happening.

I contemplated breaking this down into file-sized patches but I don't
think it really makes sense in this case since it's the same change
which is being made in each file and, imo, it wouldn't really ease
reviewer burden since the same number of changes are being reviewed.

I think this is worth doing. It's a little easier to read, and sets a
better example anyone copying the code.

I'll admit I gave only a quick read through the results. I think between
your script, the manual look-over for style, and the fact that the
compiler would catch any minor syntactic screwups, I'm not likely to
see any new errors.

As a reviewer I much prefer one big patch like this, since these are all
the same case: changing style X to style Y. I'd want patches broken out
if there were other case (say, the parameters for some version needed
fixed up as you were converting). But I don't see that here.

Sure.

And it would be much nicer if the patch actually applies.  I am
getting "SHA-1 information for builtin/push.c is unusable" from 
"am -3".

I'd reject the first hunk on builtin/push.c as that part should be
done with an updated version of the patch that is titled "push:
unset PARSE_OPT_OPTARG for --recurse-submodules" and apply the rest
as an independent clean-up patch.

Here is what I am going to queue for this fix; hopefully it can be
cherry-picked by folks who maintain older versions of Git for
distros and in-house use.

The other "huge" patch has also been adjusted by dropping the first
hunk on builtin/push.c from it, and then resurrecting the part to
use OPT_CALLBACK_F() for compare-and-swap (which happened to be in
the same hunk).

Thanks for the fix and clean-up.  Very much appreciated.

Subject: [PATCH] push: unset PARSE_OPT_OPTARG for --recurse-submodules

When the usage for `git push` is shown, it includes the following
lines

	--recurse-submodules[=(check|on-demand|no)]
			      control recursive pushing of submodules

which seem to indicate that the argument for --recurse-submodules is
optional. However, we cannot actually run that optiion without an
argument:

	$ git push --recurse-submodules
	fatal: recurse-submodules missing parameter

Unset PARSE_OPT_OPTARG so that it is clear that this option requires an
argument. Since the parse-options machinery guarantees that an argument
is present now, assume that `arg` is set in the else of
option_parse_recurse_submodules().
