Hmm, from man bash:

  checkwinsize
    If  set, bash checks the window size after each external (non‐builtin) com‐
    mand and, if necessary, updates the values of LINES and COLUMNS.  This  op‐
    tion is enabled by default.

Seems like since bash 5.0 this is on by default.
