Considering that the mail number per day of this mailing list is quite
large, is there a way to only receive the topics I participated in or
initiated on this mailing list?

You can, on _your_ end, filter incoming messages that are sent via
vger.kernel.org and do not have your address on To or Cc.

I'm not sure if this can be done by Gmail.

If you only care about topics that you have participated in, the easiest
thing is to simply unsubscribe from the list. The usual convention on
this list is to keep recipients in the to/cc fields intact, so you'll
continue to receive those emails directly from their senders.

Thank you very much for your comment. It seems that the following
Gmail filter will do the trick:

From: *@vger.kernel.org
To or Cc: -hongyi.zhao@gmail.com

But I can't find the Cc field on the filter panel.

Do you mean I still can post to this list without subscription to it?

Yes.

You can also read the archive at https://lore.kernel.org/git if you
later feel like checking for threads you might have missed.

Does this rule apply to all the lists residing on <http://vger.kernel.org/>?

Maybe you can use the "Doesn't have" filter field. (It doesn't have
the same meaning, but perhaps it is close enough for your needs.) I
have this set on my Gmail account:
https://matheustavares.gitlab.io/posts/first-steps-contributing-to-git#filters

Thanks a lot for your notes and I applied the setting rules suggested
by you now.

BTW, I'm not sure whether the following two formats are equivalent or not:

list:(<git.vger.kernel.org>) and list:(<git@vger.kernel.org>)

Ahh, yes, that is indeed the right answer for this list, as we
accept and respond to messages from non-subscribers, and the
convention is to Cc everybody involved by default.

Thanks.

Here is what I use to process messages that are sent to me without
being sent to the mailing list:

    (to:gitster@pobox.com -(to:git@vger.kernel.org))

The rule is set to skip the inbox and throw it in dustbin ;-).

I'd imagine something like

    (-(to:hongyi.zhao@gmail.com) (to:git@vger.kernel.org))

would hit what you want to filter out. Let me swap To/Cc of this
message so that you would appear on Cc so that you can experiment; I
think to: would work for such a message just fine as well.

Yes, and any exceptions would be documented.

Btw, you can use the "tc:" prefix to search To/Cc: fields
as documented in https://lore.kernel.org/git/_/text/help/

You can get all the messages sent to you in gzipped mboxrd
format via:

  curl -sSf -d '' 'https://lore.kernel.org/git/?q=tc:hongyi&x=m' >mboxrd.gz

And public-inbox.org/git still exists for redundancy and dogfooding:

  curl -sSf -d '' 'https://public-inbox.org/git/?q=tc:hongyi&x=m' >mboxrd.gz

There may be a CLI tool for dealing with that in the near future
that lets you keep track of which messages you've read/unread or tagged :>

Thank you for telling me this. But why the content can't be directly
print on the stdout as shown below:

werner@X10DAi:~$ curl -sSf -d '' 'https://lore.kernel.org/git/?q=tc:hongyi&x=m'
werner@X10DAi:~$ curl -sSf -d '' 'https://public-inbox.org/git/?q=tc:hongyi&x=m'
werner@X10DAi:~$

As you can see, nothing is shown to me.

It's gzip compressed. Try something like this instead:

  $ curl -sSf -d '' 'https://lore.kernel.org/git/?q=tc:hongyi&x=m' | zless

Oops, leaving out '-s' for curl would've shown you the error.
It's gzipped for bandwidth + I/O savings and truncation checking),
so you can pipe it to zcat or "pigz -dc":

curl -Sf -d '' 'https://public-inbox.org/git/?q=tc:hongyi&x=m' | zcat

Thanks a lot for your wonderful notes. Based on my trial and error
with Gmail's filter/search toolbar, It seems that the correct filter
should be written as follows to meet my requirements:

to:(git@vger.kernel.org) -{hongyi.zhao@gmail.com}
to:(git@vger.kernel.org) -hongyi.zhao@gmail.com

NB, you can also change the "@" to ".", they are equivalent in the
filtering result, as shown below:

 to:(git.vger.kernel.org) -{hongyi.zhao.gmail.com}
 to:(git.vger.kernel.org) -hongyi.zhao.gmail.com
