I've been staring at this E-Mail client for tens of minutes and should
probably start writing something. It's hard to know what to say.

Most of my (comparatively small) involvement with git post-dates Shawn.

It's always a bit strange to contribute to projects and feel like you're
getting to know people you've never met except through their work and
E-Mail correspondence.

I've met many of you, but never met Shawn, but feel like I know him from
all his work for which I and others are thankful for.

I'm sorry he's gone, and have all the best hopes for his family and
children.

They don't want any flowers sent over to them, but I wonder if we
couldn't make some sort of tribute to Shawn at the upcoming developer
meeting in Barcelona (and find some way to have remote people contribute
to it).

E.g. a short video/audio of different people in the dev community
sharing some story about Shawn, or a written list of memories
contributed by and signed by various people.

I don't know what that would look like exactly, but I think it would be
a good thing for his family and especially for his children when they're
grown to remember him by, to know that their father contributed to these
software projects with people all over the world, and that all these
people appreciated his work and him personally.

Thanks for posting this.

I know Shawn has not been all that active on this list in the past few
years, so many may not know how active he has been behind the scenes:

 - serving on the Git project leadership committee

 - managing many of the contributors whose names you see here daily

 - working on other Git ecosystem projects that aren't on this list
   (like JGit!)

Over the many years, I've found him consistently smart, hard-working,
funny, and just overall pleasant to work with. I'll miss him.

I like this direction (though like you, I'm not sure exactly what it
should look like). I'm not sure what kind of video presence GitHub will
have at the contrib summit, but I'll see about getting some interview
footage there.

Doing something written, though, may make it easier for remote people to
collaborate.

Chris, also on this email thread, is working on putting together some
kind of video of Shawn's colleagues at Google talking about working
with him.  Part of the thought is that his boys are going to want to
know what there dad was like at some point later in their lives and it
would be nice to capture the thoughts of the people who knew Shawn.

Chris: if people outside of Google wanted to include videos about what
it was like knowing and working with Shawn, how could we do it?  Is
there guidance (length?  format?)?  Deliver as an attachment over
email to you?

I'm one of those contributors.  I'm very proud to have had Shawn's
leadership and guidance while working on this project.  I would not be
the engineer I am today without his guidance.  He was always quick to
drop what he was doing to help and despite not having worked on the
project himself in a while, he was able to answer, in detail, any
technical questions I had.

He's left a rather large void on our team, and he will be sorely missed.

Since I suspect many people will want to participate in text form that
wouldn't via video, here's an idea (not mutually exclusive with the
video).

We gather text from people involved in git about Shawn. This gets added
to a git repo, we fast-export it, have it printed as hardcover in
fixed-width font, in "a format your dad made".

Unfortunately I just learned that we (GitHub) are not actually sending
video folks to Barcelona this year. So we (Git) are on our own for
recording anything. Certainly we can record something with one of our
cameras, though I wonder if it might be simpler to just have people
record themselves and send it to Chris, then.
