Hi, all:

I used Eric's public-inbox.org archives to set up our own copy on
lore.kernel.org and identical list archives are now available on that
server.

I spoke with Eric and he recommends that official project documentation
starts using lore.kernel.org/git URLs in daily use and git's official
documentation in order to allow him more freedom of decision when it
comes to hosting his equipment. The URLs at both domains remain the
same, e.g.:

- https://lore.kernel.org/git/7vll0wvb2a.fsf@assigned-by-dhcp.cox.net/

Best regards,
-K

Almost :) I forget it exists, but there's the "gmane:$ARTICLE_NUM"
altid mapping search support on my server for legacy gmane URLs.

Instructions to set it up:

Yup, .org TLD renewal costs will likely go up and I won't pay
higher costs to keep .org domains.

The system running public-inbox.org (and the recommended
onions(*)) will stay running and will have bleeding edge
code on it.

Thank you for setting this up (and thank you Eric for the public-inbox
code and service; it's _so_ much nicer than the previous alternatives).

It sounds like we should do something like the series below.

Since lore.kernel.org now has the same archive as public-inbox.org and
may have more longevity going forward[1], let's recommend people use it
for finding or referencing messages.

Since we're now recommending lore.kernel.org (and because the
public-inbox.org domain might eventually go away), let's update our
internal references to use it, too. That future-proofs our references,
and sets the example we want people to follow.

peff.net/git/$MESSAGE_ID/ would be nice to have, as well :)

Anyways, consider this series:

This is a great idea. I clicked a few of the links to verify they

I think it would make sense for the Git SFC arm of things[1] to consider
taking over the public-inbox.org domain rather than letting it expire
(of course contingent on your approval) and turning it into a CNAME (or
other redirect) for lore.kernel.org.

We have a lot of mailing list and some (~130 commits) git.git commit
references to that domain. It seems like a worthwhile expense to me to
pay for the renewal of it rather than having it turn into e.g. some spam
landing page as the registration expires.

I'm also one of those people, and I'd consider it as well. A lot of it
would depend on the cost, and what happens with this whole .org
registrar thing.

Thanks for doing this. Perhaps while we're at it, we want to change all
of the MARC and Gmane links as well? The series below does this.

I've based my series on top of yours so if you need to do a reroll, feel
free to pick my changes in.

Since we're now recommending lore.kernel.org, replace marc.info links
with lore.kernel.org.

Although MARC has been around for a long time, nothing lasts forever
(see Gmane). Since MARC uses opaque message identifiers, switching to
LKML should be a strict improvement since, even if LKML goes
down, the Message-ID will allow future readers to look up the referenced
messages on any other archive.

We leave behind one reference to MARC in the README.md since it's a
perfectly fine mail archive for personal reading, just not for linking
messages for the future.

The only references to Gmane that remain are in RelNotes. Although these
are definitely not in active use, they might be of historical interest
for future readers so let's ensure that mail references are more robust.

Replace links to Gmane with links to LKML (which is our new preferred
mailing list archive and has the Message-ID in the URL) and bare Gmane
ID references with Message-IDs.

The Message-IDs were found by searching for "gmane:<id>" on
https://public-inbox.org/git/ and taking the resulting message.

One of the things I appreciate most about https://public-inbox.org/git is
that you can clone it. I just tried this with
https://lore.kernel.org/git/...

$ git clone https://lore.kernel.org/git/  lore-git
Cloning into 'lore-git'...
warning: You appear to have cloned an empty repository.

Is this something other people also care about?

Oops, that's a usability issue I hope to fix at some point.

> Is this something other people also care about?

Instructions are actually at the bottom:

   git clone --mirror https://lore.kernel.org/git/0 git/git/0.git

The "0" is the "epoch", and larger repos have multiple epochs,
roughly 1GB each. https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/ has 0..7, right now.

There's also https://public-inbox.org/meta/ and other (FLOSS-related)
mirrors and the root landing page itself.

One feature I'd like to see in public-inbox and even git
porcelain and web viewers is the ability to rewrite URLs on the
client-side, similar to .mailmap. It would make sense they all
share the same configuration.

Fwiw, I intentionally keep the branding of the public-inbox
project weak (no trademarks, logos, real homepage) because I
believe strong branding and consolidation of influence/identity
leads to centralization. It's easier to fork projects when
there's no logos, trademarks or other branding to deal with.

I also believe the term "public inbox" is a much more powerful
idea than any project could be. To that end, I'm happy
SourceHut (and maybe others) also use that term. The
"public-inbox" project is just one cheapskate's anti-consumerist
interpretation of that idea :>

I pretty much say whatever I can to sabotage my own credibility
as a result. I'm also shy and introverted, so branding and good
marketing does not compute :P

In this and the last patch, I had a brainfart and I thought LKML and
lore.kernel.org were the same thing but obviously they're not.

That would be nice. As you can tell from my puzzlement, not everybody
scrolls down to the instruction (which I finally found after your
comment)...

Okay, so how does that work, is the idea that you should graft them
together using replacement objects if you want to have the full archive?

And: if I want to track the latest mails in GitGitGadget, what indication
will I have that I'll need to switch to `.../1`?

Thanks,
Dscho

Yes. Except we don't actually use grafts/replace and users can
currently only clone the latest epoch of LKML. In the future,
it should also be easy to jettison old epochs if space is
limited.

> And: if I want to track the latest mails in GitGitGadget, what indication

You can use the gzipped JSON grokmirror manifest at:
https://lore.kernel.org/git/manifest.js.gz

grokmirror could be a bit of a pain to install because of Python
dependencies, so periodically attempting to clone the next
numbered epoch ought to be fine, too.

I've also considered adding epoch info into
https://lore.kernel.org/git/_/text/config/raw
so shell scripters w/o JSON parsers can use "git config"

I just had a look at its contents:

-- snip --
; example public-inbox config snippet for "git"
; see public-inbox-config(5) manpage for more details:
[publicinbox "git"]
	inboxdir = /path/to/top-level-inbox
	; note: public-inbox before v1.2.0 used "mainrepo"
; instead of "inboxdir", both remain supported after 1.2
	mainrepo = /path/to/top-level-inbox
	address = git@vger.kernel.org
	listid = git.vger.kernel.org
	filter = PublicInbox::Filter::Mirror
	newsgroup = org.kernel.vger.git
	nntpmirror = nntp://nntp.lore.kernel.org/org.kernel.vger.git
-- snap --

Isn't `inboxdir` and `mainrepo` incorrect?

And yes, adding `epoch` information there would be very welcome.

Thanks,

How so? It's fine to have both in case users need to downgrade
to older versions of public-inbox.

Noted. Not sure if the "modified" and "fingerprint" keys of
manifest would make sense there, too...

I must have misinterpreted the purpose of this URL, then. I thought that
was the configuration of _this_ instance, and that I could use the path
indicated by `mainrepo` to replace the `/_/text/config/raw` part of the
URL to get to the repo URL.

Is this just a template file, then?

I have no idea what purpose they serve, so I have no opinion on this
question.

It's a config snippet that can be copy+pasted into
~/.public-inbox/config and edited to suit the local machine
(but also human-readable and git-config(1)-parseable)

Both "mainrepo" and "inboxdir" refer to local paths, not URLs,
currently. But it would be nice to access inboxes over WebDAV
or similar :>

They're timestamps and checksums used to reduce the cost of
checking multiple repos for updates. It's hugely beneficial
when there's 100s or 1000s of repos to mirror. grokmirror only
makes one HTTP request to get manifest.js.gz, and only runs
fetches for ones that need updating.

It's a less useful for git@vger since there's only one epoch,
currently; and checking for the existence of a next one (1.git)
isn't that expensive.

I suspect that most of the reference you make to LKML should refer
to lore.kernel.org instead.

Replacing gmane articule number with the message ID is very much
appreciated.

We reference many mail archives that use opaque links. Even though many
have been around for a long time, they may still be liable to go down
(see Gmane) leaving us with dead links that we cannot reference in the
future. Replace these links with links to lore.kernel.org which use
Message-IDs so that if lore.kernel.org ever goes down, it will be much
easier to find these messages in the future.

My series is based on top of 'jk/lore-is-the-archive'.

Since we're now recommending lore.kernel.org, replace marc.info links
with lore.kernel.org.

Although MARC has been around for a long time, nothing lasts forever
(see Gmane). Since MARC uses opaque message identifiers, switching to
lore.kernel.org should be a strict improvement since, even if
lore.kernel.org goes down, the Message-ID will allow future readers to
look up the referenced messages on any other archive.

Replace links to Gmane with links to lore.kernel.org (which is our new
preferred mailing list archive and has the Message-ID in the URL) and
bare Gmane ID references with Message-IDs.

The Message-IDs were found by searching for "gmane:<id>" on
https://public-inbox.org/git/ and taking the resulting message.

Since we're now recommending lore.kernel.org, replace LKML link
with lore.kernel.org.

Although LKML has been around for a long time, nothing lasts forever
(see Gmane). Since LKML uses opaque message identifiers, switching to
lore.kernel.org should be a strict improvement since, even if
lore.kernel.org goes down, the Message-ID will allow future readers to
look up the referenced messages on any other archive.

It must have taken some tedious manual work to figure out the
original message IDs, but the end result that uses the message IDs
would have a lot better longevity than the original.

Thanks for working on this; will queue (on top of peff's topic).
