Hi!

5.4-based kernel works ok on my droid 4.

5.5-rc3 based kernel has problems; it reboots when I try to kexec it.

Vanilla 5.5-rc3 reboots, too.

If you have any ideas, let me know.

Best regards,
									Pavel

I managed to get partial serial dump. This should be 5.5-rc3: And then
a bit better serial dump (below). But it is silent for few seconds,
and then it restarts...

Best regards,

If spi or regulators have problems, nothing will really work..

I'm not seeing this with v5.5-rc4 though, maybe it already got fixed?

I tried v5.5-rc4, and it does not boot either. I'm kexecing from
5.3-rc2. Maybe there's Kconfig difference? This is my...

Hmmm. I'm too lazy to think. 5.4 is okay, 5.5-rc3 is broken... Let me
try 5.5-rc1 and then bisect. Unfortunately getting serial output is
tricky, too, since I need the USB for kexec...

If you know that there's known bug somewhere in 5.5-rc1, tell
me. Bisect can only locate one bug....

Best regards,

This means that either the bisection is unreliable (it might be 100%
reproducible or you mixed up good/bad once), or that the arm-soc
branch was indeed good by itself but had a conflict with some other
change that torvalds merged earlier.

I would suggest to go back to the list I had extracted in my previous
email and revert all the commits that I identify there, on top of
linux-5.5-rc4. If some commit is not easily reverted, skip that one
at first.

Ideally this gets you a working kernel based on -rc4, and then
you can bisect that to find which revert fixed it.

I also tested with your .config and v5.4-rc4 boots just fine
for me on two different droid4s.

The regulator warning is there with built-in drivers that's probably
related to deferred probe and should be fixed though.

But wlan and mmc work meaning what you're seeing is not a regulator
issue.

Also please check your dtb is up to date. We still have a lot of
stuff missing from the device tree meaning an old dtb will likely
be incomplete for many devices.

Aha, thanks for a hint!

Yes, due to the kexec setup, I was using old dtb (5.3-rc?) with new
kernel...

Let me try with matching kernel+dtb combination.

Best regards,

Aha, so it works ok when using matching kernel + dtb.

Is 5.5 kernel with 5.3 dtb situation worth debugging?

Best regards,

OK good to hear.

> Is 5.5 kernel with 5.3 dtb situation worth debugging?

Well producing a warning based on something would be good. Not sure
what the logic would be though, checking for some minimum dtb version
required would have to be bumped until we have complete dts data.

Tony

Please make sure this one is applied, while bisecting:

Sorry about this
