v8 is here. The only change this time is the renaming of hclk to niu.
The background is that I needed to add a new clock to the HDMI controller
driver to make it work on rk356x. The purpose of this clock was not
clear, but during v7 discussions it turned out that this clock is not
needed for the HDMI controller itself, but SoC internal logic demands
that this clock must be turned on whenever pclk_vo is turned on. This
logic is in the reference manual described as "NIU" (Native Interface
Unit), so I renamed the clock from hclk to niu.

Sascha

Changes since v7:
- rename hclk to niu

Changes since v6:
- Move of_graph parsing out of runtime code to initialization

Changes since v5:
- Add new patch to fix dw-hdmi of_graph binding
- Drop "drm/encoder: Add of_graph port to struct drm_encoder" and solve
  issue internally in the driver
- make checkpatch cleaner

Changes since v4:
- Reorder patches in a way that binding/dts/driver patches are closer together
- Drop clk patches already applied by Heiko

Changes since v3:
- added changelog to each patch
- Add 4k support to hdmi driver
- rebase on v5.17-rc1

Changes since v2:
- Add pin names to HDMI supply pin description
- Add hclk support to HDMI driver
- Dual license rockchip-vop2 binding, update binding
- Add HDMI connector to board dts files
- drop unnecessary gamma_lut registers from vop2
- Update dclk_vop[012] clock handling, no longer hacks needed
- Complete regmap conversion

Changes since v1:
- drop all unnecessary waiting for frames within atomic modeset and plane update
- Cluster subwin support removed
- gamma support removed
- unnecessary irq_lock removed
- interrupt handling simplified
- simplified zpos handling
- drop is_alpha_support(), use fb->format->has_alpha instead
- use devm_regulator_get() rather than devm_regulator_get_optional() for hdmi regulators
- Use fixed number of planes per video port
- Drop homegrown regmap code from vop2 driver (not complete yet)
- Add separate include file for vop2 driver to not pollute the vop include

The VOP2 driver needs rockchip specific information for a drm_encoder.

This patch creates a struct rockchip_encoder with a struct drm_encoder
embedded in it. This is used throughout the rockchip driver instead of
struct drm_encoder directly.

The information the VOP2 drivers needs is the of_graph endpoint node
of the encoder. To ease bisectability this is added here.

While at it convert the different encoder-to-driverdata macros to
static inline functions in order to gain type safety and readability.

The VOP2 has an interface mux which decides to which encoder(s) a CRTC
is routed to. The encoders and CRTCs are connected via of_graphs in the
device tree. When given an encoder the VOP2 driver needs to know to
which internal register setting this encoder matches. For this the VOP2
binding offers different endpoints, one for each possible encoder. The
endpoint ids of these endpoints are used as a key from an encoders
device tree description to the internal register setting.

This patch adds the key aka endpoint id to struct rockchip_encoder plus
a function to read the endpoint id starting from the encoders device
node.

"vpll" is a misnomer. A clock input to a device should be named after
the usage in the device, not after the clock that drives it. On the
rk3568 the same clock is driven by the HPLL.
To fix that, this patch renames the vpll clock to ref clock. The clock
name "vpll" is left for compatibility to old device trees.

The reference clock for the HDMI controller has been renamed to 'ref',
the previous 'vpll' name is only left for compatibility in the driver.
Rename the clock to the new name.

The rk3568 HDMI has an additional clock that needs to be enabled for the
HDMI controller to work. This clock is not needed for the HDMI
controller itself, but to make the SoC internal bus logic work. From the
reference manual:

> 2.8.6 NIU Clock gating reliance
>
> A part of niu clocks have a dependence on another niu clock in order to
> sharing the internal bus. When these clocks are in use, another niu
> clock must be opened, and cannot be gated. These clocks and the special
> clock on which they are relied are as following:

> Clocks which have dependency The clock which can not be gated
> -----------------------------------------------------------------
> ...
> pclk_vo_niu, hclk_vo_s_niu hclk_vo_niu
> ...

The clock framework does not support turning on a clock whenever another
clock is turned on, so this patch adds support for the dependent clock
to the HDMI driver. We call it "NIU", which is for "Native Interface
Unit"

The RK3568 has HDMI_TX_AVDD0V9 and HDMI_TX_AVDD_1V8 supply inputs
needed for the HDMI port. Add the binding for these supplies.

From: Douglas Anderson <dianders@chromium.org>

The previous tables for mpll_cfg and curr_ctrl were created using the
20-pages of example settings provided by the PHY vendor. Those
example settings weren't particularly dense, so there were places
where we were guessing what the settings would be for 10-bit and
12-bit (not that we use those anyway). It was also always a lot of
extra work every time we wanted to add a new clock rate since we had
to cross-reference several tables.

In <https://crrev.com/c/285855> I've gone through the work to figure
out how to generate this table automatically. Let's now use the
automatically generated table and then we'll never need to look at it
again.

We only support 8-bit mode right now and only support a small number
of clock rates and I've verified that the only 8-bit rate that was
affected was 148.5. That mode appears to have been wrong in the old
table.

The driver checks if the pixel clock of the given mode matches an entry
in the mpll config table. The frequencies in the mpll table are meant as
a frequency range up to which the entry works, not as a frequency that
must match the pixel clock. The downstream Kernel also does not have
this check, so drop it to allow for more display resolutions.

Jitter was improved by lowering the MPLL bandwidth to account for high
frequency noise in the rk3288 PLL. In each case MPLL bandwidth was
lowered only enough to get us a comfortable margin. We believe that
lowering the bandwidth like this is safe given sufficient testing.

With upcoming VOP2 support VOP won't be the only choice anymore, so make
the VOP driver optional.

The VOP2 is found on newer Rockchip SoCs like the rk3568 or the rk3566.
The binding differs slightly from the existing VOP binding, so add a new
binding file for it.

Current port description doesn't cover all possible cases. It currently
expects one single port with two endpoints.

When the HDMI connector is described in the device tree there can be two
ports, first one going to the VOP and the second one going to the connector.

Also on SoCs which only have a single VOP there will be only one
endpoint instead of two.

This patch addresses both issues. With this there can either be a single
port ("port") , or two of them ("port@0", "port@1") when the connector
is also in the device tree. Also the first or only port can either have
one endpoint ("endpoint") for single VOP SoCs or two ("endpoint@0",
"endpoint@1") for dual VOP SoCs.

This still doesn't make sense to me. You're saying that "pclk_vo_niu,
hclk_vo_s_niu" depend on "hclk_vo_niu", but HDMI doesn't use pclk_vo, it
uses pclk_hdmi. I don't see how these "niu" clocks are related to HDMI
from your description. The pclk_vo should remain being disabled for HDMI.

I already said before that the datasheet suggests that hclk_vo needs to
be enabled in order to ungate the AHB part of the VO module, which is
needed for CPU accesses. Elain, could you please confirm this or clarify
more about why hclk_vo needs to be enabled for HDMI?

It was unclear that the pclk_hdmi is the child of pclk_vo by looking at
the clk driver's code, thank you!

Won't be better if the implicit clk dependency would be handled
internally by the RK clk driver? For example, by making the common gate
shared/refcounted. Have you considered this variant? Then we won't need
to change the DT bindings.

Do we need some modification to test AFBC by weston-simple-dma-egl ?

I have a buildroot system with weston-10.0.9 and mesa 21.3.5.

After launch weston, I run weston-simple-dmabuf-egl, but from the output

of sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/state, the weston is still use Smart0-win0,
which is

a non-AFBC window.

Do i need to modify the vop2 driver to set one Cluster window as primary
plane?

Are you using the open-source Panfrost driver, or the proprietary Arm
DDK? The DDK was previously using some non-standard modifier tokens
which have since been corrected upstream.

You can see from running `weston-debug drm-backend` (if you start
Weston with `--debug`) the output as it tries to put client surfaces
on to overlay planes, and why it can or cannot.

For Weston's own composited output (used when it cannot place client
surfaces on to planes), it will just use whatever the KMS driver
declares as the primary plane. Weston does not have any logic to say
'oh, this plane is AFBC and AFBC is better, so I will use this as my
primary plane': we just follow what the kernel tells us.

Cheers,
Daniel

I use mesa 21.3.5 with open-source Panfrost driver enabled.

When I modify Sascha's vop2 driver, set a Cluster windows as primary plane,

Then launch weston,  vop2 report POST_BUF_EMPTY irq err.

From the log I can see many "panfrost fde60000.gpu: js fault, js=0,
status=DATA_INVALID_FAULT" [0]

I check the register configuration of Cluster window, there is no
obvious error.

I event run a ovltest[1] written by myself feed a AFBC RGB data to
Cluster0.  it can display ok.

It seems that the basic afbc configuration of vop2 is right, but
something is wrong with Panfrost?

By default weston-simple-dma-egl uses DRM_FORMAT_XRGB8888 which in the
panfrost driver ends up as PIPE_FORMAT_B8G8R8_UNORM and
panfrost_afbc_format() returns PIPE_FORMAT_NONE for that. Change the
format to DRM_FORMAT_ABGR8888 using weston-simple-dma-egl -f 0x34324241.
This ends up as PIPE_FORMAT_R8G8B8A8_UNORM in panfrost_afbc_format()
which is a supported format.

I never used a Cluster window as primary plane.

I have considered handling something like coupled clocks in the clock
framework, but I have not yet considered handling this internally in the
Rockchip clock driver.

I just had a quick look at the driver. While it sounds like an easy task
to enable gate A whenever gate B is enabled I haven't found a good way to
integrate that into the clk driver. It seems to me that it's not easier
to implement in the clk driver than it is to implement it in the clk
framework where it could be used by others as well.

For the DT bindings it is just an additional clock. Should we have a
better way to handle that case in the future we could simply ignore the
additional clock. I wouldn't bother too much about this.

To me that NIU quirk should be internal to the clk h/w module, so it
doesn't feel nice to mix the clk h/w description with the HDMI h/w
description.

On the other hand, making clk driver to handle this case indeed will
take some effort as I see now. For example, clk driver of NVIDIA Tegra
has concept of shared gates, but bringing it to the RK clk driver will
be quite messy.

Alright, let's work around the clk limitation like you're suggesting. I
agree that it shouldn't really be a problem to deprecate the extra clock
later on.

I have last questions..

1. Previously you said that the PD driver takes care of enabling all the
clocks it can find in the device by itself on RPM-resume, then why HDMI
driver needs to enable the clock explicitly?

2. You added clk_prepare_enable(), but there is no corresponding
clk_disable_unprepare(), AFAICS. Why?

From a quick look, it seems like it could be straightforward
conceptually at least. Presumably: subclass clk_gate_ops to
enable/disable a required clock before enabling/disabling normally, have
rockchip_clk_register_branch() resolve an optional required clock and
pick gate_ops as appropriate, then the rest is basically just
boilerplate for describing the dependencies in the first place. However
I'd agree that in practical implementation terms it does look even
simpler and cleaner for the clk_hw abstraction to provide the
appropriate ops and resolution itself.

If there's a realistic chance that someone will actually work on a
proper coupled/dependent/whatever clock abstraction before the rest of
RK3588 is supported well enough for mainline users to start really
caring about power efficiency, then arguably the simplest and cleanest
workaround would be the other option that Elaine mentioned, of just
marking hclk_vo as critical for now. If it's likely to turn into a
"nothing's as permanent as a temporary fix" situation, though, then the
DT binding has less functional impact, even if it does leave us
developers with baggage down the line.

Robin.

I missed that suggestion about marking hclk_vo as critical. That's a
good idea, I like it.

The PD driver only does so when the device has pm_runtime enabled.
Currently that's not the case for the hdmi driver. That could be changed
of course, but I am not convinced that it's a good idea that the PD
driver messes with the consumers clocks. It would also make the PD
driver mandatory which it currently not is.

Because I missed it ;)

I can reproduce this here. It seems I have only tested overlays with two
active VPs. With only one active VP I see the same behaviour as you do.

The following patch fixes this, will include that in the next round.
