First of all, as per instruction on the wiki for the mailing list, you can
find everything asked for from the "What information to provide when asking a
support question" section is at the end of my email. Look for a series of ##
to know when this info is located.

So, the setup is that I've got a system with 3 drives containing btrfs on them
- SSDHome, NotHome, and Photos. Recently, I finally have a server in the
basement with two btrfs drives - backups1 and backups2. It will, naturally, be
used for backups. The whole reason I'm using btrfs is for this awesome ability
that comes from snapshots and it not taking up too much space because of COW.

When I did the btrfs send / receive for SSDHome it took 2.5 days to send
~500GiB over a 1GBps cable to the 3GBps drive in the server. It also had the
error:
ERROR: failed to clone extents to ermesa/.cache/krunner/
bookmarkrunnerfirefoxfavdbfile.sqlite: Invalid argument

and took like 99% CPU according to top for the btrfs process. The subvols in
NotHome, by contrast, took MUCH LESS time for the same amount of data.

So I did a bunch of internet research and I found a thread on the mailing list
that relinks can cause send to take a lot longer. And I didn't have autodefrag
on SSDHome mount options in fstab, but had it in the other drives that dont'
have a problem. So I ran btrfs fi defrag -v -r /home/ and it listed 5
failures. But after that, I did send/receive again with SSDHome and it was SO
MUCH BETTER! btrfs never (or almost never) took more than 2.5% of CPU for
btrfs while it was running and it took just 18 hours to send the data over the
same cables and to the same drive.

So I thought I'd solved the problem. (Although at the cost of my snapshots
taking up more space on the SSD) I was able to do a send/receive with the -p
option so that the next time it went faster. Life was good.

But then....

Here's a situation I am pretty consistently running into (but only with
SSDHome - it works fine with the other drives so far....)

Let's say that snapshot A is a snapshot sent to the server without -p. It
sends the entire 500GB for 18 hours.

Then I do snapshot B. I send it with -p - takes 15 minutes or so depending on
how much data I've added.

Then I do snapshot C - and here I always get an error.

And it always is something like:

ERROR: link ermesa/.mozilla/firefox/n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/
bookmarks-2019-06-09_679_I1bs5PtgsPwtyXvcvcRdSg==.jsonlz4 -> ermesa/.mozilla/
firefox/n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/
bookmarks-2019-06-08_679_I1bs5PtgsPwtyXvcvcRdSg==.jsonlz4 failed: No such file
or directory

It always involves either .cache or .mozilla - the types of files that are
constantly changing.

It doesn't matter if I do a defrag before snapshot C followed by the sync
command. It seems that for SSDHome I can only do one full snap send and then
one parent send.

Again, so far it seems to be working fine with the other drives which seems to
suggest to me that it's maybe not the version of my kernel or btrfs progs or
anything else.

I've got the info below, but when I ran a scrub and a btrfs check everything
came back fine.

So any help you can give me here would be awesome because I'd prefer not to
have to either always start from snapshot A (as time increases from A, each
snap is going to take longer to send) and it's weird that it's only happening
with that drive.

While there are distinct send and receive errors possible, I'm not
familiar with recognizing them. You can get a better idea what the
problem is with -vv or -vvv to get a more verbose error on the side
that's having the problem. My guess is this is a send error message.

It's most useful if you show exact commands because actually it's not
always obvious to everyone what the logic should be and the error
handling doesn't always stop a user from doing something that doesn't
make a lot of sense. We need to know the name of the rw subvolume; the
command to snapshot it; the full send/receive command for that first
snapshot; the command for a subsequent snapshot; and the command to
incrementally send/receive it.

I don't actually know the status of snapshot aware defragmentation. It
wasn't there, then it was there, then there were problems, and I think
it was pulled rather than fixed. But I don't remember really. I also
don't know if there's a difference between manual defragging and
autodefrag, because I don't use either one. I do use reflinks. And I
have done deduplication. And I don't have any send/receive failures. I
do sometimes see slow sections of send/receive.

Do you remember the mkfs command for this file system? Or also helpful would be:

# btrfs insp dump-s -f /dev/X ## for both send and receive side file
system (only one device from each Btrfs volume is needed), this will
give us an idea what the mkfs options were including feature flags.

Could be related. And then also

USB enclosed drives can be troublesome with any file system, expressly
because of these seemingly random reset that happen. I had the same
thing in an early form of my setup, and it did cause me problems that
Btrfs worked around. But I considered it untenable and fixed it with a
good quality self-powered USB hub (don't rely on bus power), or
perhaps more specifically one that comes with a high amp power
adapter. It needs to be able to drive all the drives in their
read/write usage, which for laptop drives is ~0.35A each.

You really shouldn't be getting link resets like the above, even
though I suspect it's unrelated to the current problem report.

Are you by any chance using btrfs property to change RO snapshots RW?
That must *never* be done to parent subvolumes, on either sending or
receiving side. (Really probably not a good idea to do at all outside
of very special development/testing cases, but is guaranteed to make of
mess of send/receive.)

And the actual output of each command, not description what user thinks
has happened.

OK, here's an example from when it failed, although I didn't save the error -
I'm just looking at my history for a time it failed:

#btrfs sub snap -r /home/ /home/.snapshots/2019-06-08-1437
#cd /home/.snapshots/
#btrfs send -p /home/.snapshots/2019-06-05-postdefrag/ 2019-06-08-1437/ | ssh
#root@tanukimario btrfs receive /media/backups/backups1/supermario-home
#btrfs sub snap -r /home/ /home/.snapshots/2019-06-09-1415
#btrfs send -p 2019-06-08-1437/ 2019-06-09-1415/ | ssh root@tanukimario btrfs
receive /media/backups/backups1/supermario-home

the drives in question aren't USB. That's for a USB3 hub that I use for my SD
cards.

Here is a new session where I'll capture everything - well, on the defrag I'll
do a snip.

#btrfs fi defrag -v -r /home/

...there follows a list of files that just scrolls infinitely....

# btrfs send -vvv -p /home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-1718/ /home/.snapshots/

Same error as before. So I go to tanukimario and del the errored subvol. Let
me try with -vvv on the receive as well. Well, that produces a ridiculous
scrolling list that I can't possible capture. Perhaps just -v? No, that's the
same. So then I tried this command:

# btrfs send -vvv -p /home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-1718/ /home/.snapshots/
2019-06-10-2353/ | ssh root@tanukimario btrfs receive -vvv /media/backups/
backups1/supermario-home > receive.log

But my bash-fu was bad and it didn't put anything into the log other than "At
snapshot..." So yeah....

What scrolled on my screen ended like this:

Does
ermesa/.mozilla/firefox/n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/bookmarks-2019-06-09_679_I1bs5PtgsPwtyXvcvcRdSg==.jsonlz4
actually exist in snapshot /home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-1718/ on source?

ls -lR
/home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-1718/ermesa/.mozilla/n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups

What is the content of the same directory in matching snapshot on
destination?

Please show "btrfs subvolume list -qRu /home" for source and "btrfs
subvolume list -qRu /media/backups/backups1/supermario-home" for
destination.

Sure thing. Thanks for your help.

This is source disk:

# ls -lR /home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-1718/ermesa/.mozilla/n35gu0fb.default/
bookmarkbackups/
ls: cannot access '/home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-1718/ermesa/.mozilla/
n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/': No such file or directory

You didn't ask for the child, but I'm going to do it in that, too:

# ls -lR /home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-2353/ermesa/.mozilla/n35gu0fb.default/
bookmarkbackups/
ls: cannot access '/home/.snapshots/2019-06-10-2353/ermesa/.mozilla/
n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/': No such file or directory

One more thing you didn't ask for, but since this is the ancestor of all -p
snapshots that actually worked:

# ls -lR /home/.snapshots/2019-06-05-postdefrag/ermesa/.mozilla/
n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/
ls: cannot access '/home/.snapshots/2019-06-05-postdefrag/ermesa/.mozilla/
n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/': No such file or directory

On the destination disk:

# pwd
/media/backups/backups1/supermario-home

# ls -lR 2019-06-10-1718/ermesa/.mozilla/n35gu0fb.default/bookmarkbackups/
ls: cannot access '2019-06-10-1718/ermesa/.mozilla/n35gu0fb.default/

I'm sure you guys already noticed this if you saw the email I sent about 5
minutes ago, but I did a comparison between my /home directory (which is
giving me issues) and /media/Photos and /media/NotHome which are not giving me
issues with that command you ahd me type - btrfs subvolume list -qRu. Turns
out that my snapshots in home all have a parent listed, but those other
directories don't.

For example:

# btrfs subvolume list -qRu /media/Photos/
ID 257 gen 328447 top level 5 parent_uuid -

Gentlemen (and possibly ladies), I think we've potentially found the culprit!
But how to fix without losing my data??

All your snapshots on source have the same received_uuid (I have no idea
how is it possible). If received_uuid exists, it is sent to destination
instead of subvolume UUID to identify matching snapshot. All your backup
sbapshots on destination also have the same received_uuid which is
matched against (received_)UUID of source subvolume. In this case
receive command takes the first found subvolume (probably the most
recent, i.e. with the smallest generation number). So you send
differential stream against one subvolume and this stream is applied to
another subvolume which explains the error.

Yup. Any idea of how to fix?

Maybe 'cp -a --relink' into a new subvolume on the source. It won't
complete immediately like a snapshot. But it'll complete way faster
than a normal data copy. From that point, this new subvolume becomes
"master" where all changes occur, and all the other snapshots are made
from it.

Also, you should do incrementals between the most recent two
snapshots. i.e. the snapshot that follows -p should be the snapshot
most recently successfully received on the destination. That
represents the least amount of increment needed to update the
destination. It will work the way you're doing it now, with -p being
an older snapshot, but you're unnecessarily sending a lot more data
every time.

I do not think there is easy way to fix it for existing subvolumes. So
remove existing ones, and start replication from scratch making sure you
do not have duplicated received_uuid on either source or destination sides.

Just in case anyone is searching the net with the same issue, I want to
confirm that this worked. Ever since moving to a clean /home subvol (didn't
have a recieved_UUID) everything has worked perfectly with respect to the
issue I'd emailed the mailing list about.
