To my knowledge, sd-homed doesn't do any of these things. Something else did it. Are you using snapper or timeshift? Have you used 'cp' to duplicate the home backing file? I think we've got a pretty good idea what's going on. The current work around in your case will be to use the --luks-discard=3Dtrue option when activating. This will avoid the fallocate step. But the question remains why the fallocate fails. I suspect it has something to do with shared extents. Somewhere you have one or more snapshots containing this home file.
