Pavel,
version 3 of the patch with your suggestions.
I left the full commit message of the deadlocked threads as is though.

This patch moves the final part of the cifsFileInfo_put() logic where we
need a write lock on lock_sem to be processed in a separate thread that
holds no other locks.
This is to prevent deadlocks like the one below:

> there are 6 processes looping to while trying to down_write
> cinode->lock_sem, 5 of them from _cifsFileInfo_put, and one from
> cifs_new_fileinfo

At this point the file info is still in the lists and can be
referenced by other threads not only including oplock break routine.
So, we can't cancel oplock break here - it would lead to big timeouts
to other clients trying to open the file because the server will be
waiting for an oplock break ack.

Let's do it in cifsFileInfo_put_final() as it was originally in
cifsFileInfo_put() and we do not need an extra *wait_oplock_handler*
argument - just cancel it unconditionally. If a caller of this
function don't want to deadlock on himself (like cifs_oplock_break) it
will just specify *offload* as True.

As mentioned above, here we only need *offload* as True to not wait
for ourselves.

Other than that, I think we the patch is on the right track. It should
give us an opportunity to do file handle batching easily.

INIT_WORK should be done when initializing cifsFileInfo structure.

> > +               queue_work(fileinfo_put_wq, &cifs_file->put);

As I mentioned in the parallel discussion queue_work here may return
False if the same work has been already queued. It may happen in the
following scenario:

T1 gets reference - 1
T1 is in putting the reference - checked ref > 1
T2 gets reference - 2
T1 queues work
T3 (worker) puts the reference - 1 but still didn't exit and remains
in the queue
T2 is in putting the reference - checked ref >1
T2 queues work and it returns false (!) <--- error

Sorry, it wasn't obvious to me when I was suggesting this yesterday.

One way to fix this is to check queue_work output and "goto" to the
beginning of the function if False. But there is always a probability
that we end up in the same situation and it repeats and repeats again.
I think it should resolve itself at some point in time but it doesn't
look like a good approach.

Another way to fix it is to revert the patch to the state it was at
yesterday - to offload only the remaining part of cifsFileInfo_put()
which will allow us to avoid the race from above. I am personally
leaning towards this way.

Other may comments about eliminating the need of *wait_oplock_handler*
and INIT_WORK stand for yesterday's patch too.

Thoughts?

We can leave wait_oplock_handler cleanup for a follow-on work. As for
INIT_WORK, please find a fix (on top of your patch) below. It
basically does the same as we do for cifs_oplock_break work today.

Hi Frank, Ronnie,

Ok, it seems there is another bug resulting in a deadlock between a
page lock and writeback (WB) flag in cifs_writev_complete and
cifs_writepages.

1) cifs_writev_complete. in the case of WB_SYNC_ALL and EAGAIN
(reconnect) it calls cifs_writev_requeue. At this point it still has
WB flag set for all the pages being retried. Inside
cifs_writev_requeue it tries to lock the page:

kworker/4:3+cifsiod
#0 __schedule at ffffffffab4f1a45
#1 schedule at ffffffffab4f1ea0
#2 io_schedule at ffffffffab4f22a2
#3 __lock_page at ffffffffaae3f66f
#4 cifs_writev_complete at ffffffffc07df762
#5 process_one_work at ffffffffaacecc11
#6 worker_thread at ffffffffaaced0f0
#7 kthread at ffffffffaacf2ac2
#8 ret_from_fork at ffffffffab600215

2) cifs_writepages. It locks the page and then waits on WB flag to be
cleared before processing pages:

1 openloop.sh
#0 __schedule at ffffffffab4f1a45
#1 schedule at ffffffffab4f1ea0
#2 io_schedule at ffffffffab4f22a2
#3 wait_on_page_bit at ffffffffaae3fbc6
#4 cifs_writepages at ffffffffc07ffc73
#5 do_writepages at ffffffffaae4ba71
#6 __filemap_fdatawrite_range at ffffffffaae4321b
#7 filemap_write_and_wait at ffffffffaae432aa
#8 cifs_flush at ffffffffc0800fe3
#9 filp_close at ffffffffaaeed181
#10 do_dup2 at ffffffffaaf12c0b
#11 __x64_sys_dup2 at ffffffffaaf1306a
#12 do_syscall_64 at ffffffffaac04345

The bug is in cifs_writev_complete and cifs_writev_requeue: the 1st
needs to clear the WB flag and re-dirty pages before trying to retry
the IO; the 2nd needs additionally to skip pages that are no longer
dirty (e.g. written by another thread) and re-set the WB flag before
sending pages over the wire.

Pavel,

Thanks for understanding my report and translating it into what it meant.

Ronnie,
Thanks for the patch. I'm happy to say that my attempt at the same
looks like it would have been similar, had I known what I was doing to
begin with :)

Unfortunately, I think the patch really only moves the problem from one
place to another. I'm guessing that means we have a second underlying
deadlock. (this reproducer appears to be quite effective)

On the plus side, only the one file involved is jammed in the deadlock
now, as opposed to the parent directory as well, so it is at least progress.

#!/bin/bash

testfile=testfile
openloop() {
        while true ; do
                exec 10<>$testfile
                <&10 >/dev/null
                echo "testing $$" >&10
                exec 10>&-
        done
}
for i in {1..50} ; do
        openloop &
done
wait

and on the server (once):
# systemctl restart smb.service
(or anything else which forces a reconnect)

After doing the above with 20 child processes, all are now blocked, as
are 3 cifsfileinfoput kworkers, a cifsiod kworker, and a flush-cifs kworker:

# ps x | awk '{if (substr($3, 1, 1) == "D"){print $3,$NF}}' | sort  |

Steve, Pavel, Frank

This patch moves the logic in cifsFileInfo_put() into a work-queue so that
it will be processed in a different thread which, importantly, does not hold
any other locks.

This should address the deadlock that Frank reported in the thread:
Yet another hang after network disruption or smb restart -- multiple file writers
