Hi all,

I have a SSD disk from transcend with 6 partitions, where partitions 3, 4 and 5 are locked. This disk implements the OPAL specifications and transcend supplies some tools to hide/unhide a partition.

The problem I see is that connecting this disk, all partitions are enumerated and the SATA subsystem begin to show error messages. The outcome is a long delay before the disk is available and the SATA link configured
at the minimum 1.5 Gbps speed. If the partitions are unlocked and the system rebooted (without power off to avoid locking the partitions again) the enumerations runs as usual with no errors and link configured at maximum 6 Gbps speed.

The same disk on Windows or OSX is enumerated ok, without the long delay.

Work-around: Unhidding the partitions before running 'blkid' avoids the errors because the enumeration is done with all partitions visible.

System info:
Debian 10
Kernel 4.19.37
command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.19.0-5-amd64 root=UUID=d98acd28-3ec1-440a-bc55-446c9a59f63e ro quiet libata.allow_tpm=1
uname: Linux ws-deb10 4.19.0-5-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.37-5 (2019-06-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux
blkid from util-linux 2.33.1 (libblkid 2.33.1, 09-Jan-2019)

Is this behavior known? Any solution is possible to avoid the 'patching' the udev rule?

Thanks!
Jorge

OPAL does not have a concept to hide a partition, it supports locking
ranges. In doubt you want to use the kernel opal support to unlock all
ranges and should be fine, otherwise there isn't too much we can do.

You're right. We are using locking ranges and these partitions are mapped onto these ranges.
We're try too with a locked range without any partition inside an the system tries to access the
locked range. We're wondering why kernel? blkid? is trying to get info from a locked range??
The outcome is a SATA link in 1.5Gbps after a long time boot. In windows or MacOSx works in
other way.

Thanks!
Jorge

udev through libblkid usually tries to find the file system uuid/label
for each partition, so that is my guess.

Here's a quick grep of the dmesg you sent earlier (apologies if

Notice that logical block 524272 on devices sda3, sda4, and sda5 are
cited. This is a blind guess, but are these partitions 524288 sectors
(256 MB) in size?

When blkid reads a device or a partition, there's a certain sequence
of reads that it performs, at various offsets in the device. Via
blktrace / blkparse, you can see this activity.

For an example device with a partition that starts at sector 2048, and
ends at sector 3019900928:
# blktrace -d /dev/nvme0n1p1
(Ctrl+C)
...
# blkparse -i nvme0n1p1.blktrace.0 | grep C\ *
259,1 9 7 0.000096020 0 C R 3019900800 + 8 [0]

259,1 9 28 0.000327329 0 C R 2056 + 8 [0]

259,1 9 49 0.000662515 0 C R 2080 + 8 [0]
259,1 9 56 0.000755225 0 C R 2112 + 8 [0]
259,1 9 63 0.000845546 0 C R 2176 + 8 [0]
259,1 9 70 0.000936905 0 C R 2304 + 8 [0]

...and so on. (The device major, minor says "259,1", which would be
/dev/nvme0n1p1, but the offset shown in the block trace is relative to
/dev/nvme0n1.)

You can notice that the first few reads are near the "end" of the
partition. In fact, the first two read completions are 128 sectors
before the end, and 16 sectors before the end. I'm guessing that this
"-16" read is the one that's failing in these three partitions.

Thanks,

Bryan

Hi Bryan! Thanks for your detailed answer!

No, they're 4GB partitions.

Then, there is an inconsistency in the blkid and kernel communication? Why the kernel
tries to access to a locked range? It seems that blkid ask for a sector and the kernel try
to read it back ignoring its locked, reducing speed and trying again with no luck until
the error is returned. This is consistent with our workaround removing blkid from the
udev rule to avoid the error.

Maybe the OPAL is not clear enough about locked ranges and kernel thinks is an error,
or it's an error in the disk's firmware I don't know, but under windows or MacOS X no
error is displayed.

Is there some way to ask a disk for their locked ranges and patch blkid to avoid accesing them?

Thanks,
Jorge

Oh, okay. I'm pretty sure that blkid checks regions near the end of a
device (for example, GPT has what looks like a backup of the "EFI
PART" boot record near the end of the device). Therefore, it may be
worthwhile to double-check the size of the partition, in case they're
not 4 GB, for some strange reason.

I don't know about that, but keep in mind that other programs can use
libblkid to check devices for metadata, so implementing the udev rule
may not be enough.

Here's an excerpt of the dmesg lines from the first error:

Why is there an "Illegal Request - Unaligned write command" sense
error from sd, right after the failed ata command "READ FPDMA QUEUED"?
Is this an expected failure mode for a read to a locked range? (I'm
not familiar with TCG Opal drives, so unfortunately I don't have
enough context.)

Thanks,

Bryan

Some MD RAID suprblocks also are at the end. Either way I'm pretty
sure this is legitimate probing and not a bug.

It could be that we are just having issues translating the errors,
especially given that we don't use sense data in ATA except for ZAC
drives.
