This version should cover Jonathans comments on v2,
and Rob's comments on missing DT changes in v3 and
be ripe for early merge for v5.5.

Jonathan, do you want to queue them in your tree?

When Lee applies series like this he usually puts them
on an isolated immutable branch that he then pulls
into his own tree and offer to other subsystems.
It's a good idea I think but maybe you have other
ways of working.

ChangeLog v3->v4:
- No changes just resending
ChangeLog v2->v3:
- Make Kconfig entry depend on (IIO = y) as we need it
  compiled-in.
- Rebased on v5.4-rc1
ChangeLog v1->v2:
- Collected ACKs.
- Add a Kconfig dependency on IIO
- Fixed some whitespace issues
- Rebased on v5.3-rc5

This will be applied along with the other changes in ARM
SoC and should not be applied to the power tree right now.

- No changes just resending
ChangeLog v2->v3:
- Depend on (IIO = y) since we are bool and need it compiled
  in.
- Rebased on v5.4-rc1
ChangeLog v1->v2:
- Collected ACKs.
- Rebased on v5.3-rc5
- Add a Kconfig dependency on IIO
- Fix some whitespace issues

This should not be applied to the hwmon tree right now, it
will be applied along with the other changes in ARM SoC.

As we migrate the AB8500 GPADC driver to use IIO, we need to augment
the bindings to account for defining the ADC channels in the device
tree.

This is a new driver for the ST-Ericsson AB8500 GPADC, which
replaces the old driver in drivers/mfd/ab8500-gpadc.c and
thus gets rid of another necessarily different custom driver
from the times before IIO existed.

The AB8500 GPADC can convert 10 different channels and these
are used for monitoring voltages in the U8500 chipset, some
are used for battery charging, some for temperature
monitoring.

As this is very core functionality that a lot of drivers
depend on and was formerly compiled in with the AB8500 core
driver, we deafault it to 'y' in Kconfig: it can be compiled
out but it is really not advisible: the platform can
for example overheat if we do.

ChangeLog v3->v4:
- No changes just resending
ChangeLog v2 -> v3:
- Add AB8500_GPADC_* prefixes to a few more defines to make them
  unambigous.
- Fix up a kerneldoc header for raw to processed conversion.
- Drop some dev_dbg() things, not much use for these.
- Do not initialized ret to 0 in probe()
- Compress some irq request calls to 80 cols.
- Drop pointless dev_info() at end of probe.
- With the new longer prefixes a lot of lines with especially
  interpolation goes over 80 cols. I chose not to care for
  reasonable readability. We can create a (generic) interpolation
  function/macro but that should be a separate patch.
- Rebased on v5.4-rc1
ChangeLog v1 -> v2:
- Break out the IIO driver into a separate patch just adding
  it instead of moving it in the same patch, this makes it
  easier for the IIO maintainers to review the patch.
- Rename a slew of variables and fix up comment syntax etc.
- Drop the enums for sample numbers 1, 4, 8, 16 just use numerals.
- Use a bool to indicate trigger on falling edge rather than a number.
- Use a bool to indicate hardware conversion on a channel.
- Use an enum for the channels.
- Pass a pointer to the channel config struct instead of overly
  talkative function prototype.
- Use devm_iio_device_register()
- Push the channels into the IIO device, do not keep a separate
  copy of the IIO channels inside the driver state container.
- Do not mark interrupts as shared. They are not shared.
- Remove comments commenting the obvious.
- Add prefixed to definitions and enums to avoid clashes with
  other namespaces and make it obvious where things are coming
  from.
- Drop surplus local variable.
- Drop unused OTP retrieveal function for AB8540.
- Use runtime PM for system PM callbacks.
- Use builtin_platform_driver() for initializing the driver as
  this is a bool menuconfig.
- Fix up processed reads from the ADC: I mistakedly dropped the
  flag indicating we can do processed reads, falling us back to
  just raw reads.

+ * AB8500 General Purpose ADC driver. The AB8500 uses reference voltages:
+ * VinVADC, and VADC relative to GND to do its job. It monitors main and backup
+ * battery voltages, AC (mains) voltage, USB cable voltage, as well as voltages
+ * representing the temperature of the chip die and battery, accessory
+ * detection by resistance measurements using relative voltages and GSM burst
+ * information.
+ *
+ * Some of the voltages are measured on external pins on the IC, such as
+ * battery temperature or "ADC aux" 1 and 2. Other voltages are internal rails
+ * from other parts of the ASIC such as main charger voltage, main and battery
+ * backup voltage or USB VBUS voltage. For this reason drivers for other
+ * parts of the system are required to obtain handles to the ADC to do work
+ * for them and the IIO driver provides arbitration among these consumers.

The AB8500 GPADC driver is indeed a "general purpose ADC" driver,
and while the IIO subsystem did not exist when the driver was
first merged, it is never too late to clean things up and move it
to the right place.

Nowadays IIO provides the right abstractions and interfaces to
do generic ADC work in the kernel.

We have to cut a bunch of debugfs luggage to make this transition
swift, but all these files to is read out the raw values of the
ADC and the IIO subsystem already has a standard sysfs ABI for
doing exactly this: no debugfs is needed.

ChangeLog v3->v4:
- No changes just resending
ChangeLog v2->v3:
- Rebased on v5.4-rc1 (some debugfs business changed)
ChangeLog v1->v2:
- Woke up after 2 and a hald year of inactivity and rebased the
  patch.
- Split the new IIO driver into its own patch just adding the
  new driver.
- Convert an extraneous dev_info() to dev_dbg() to silence the
  debug log.

This should not be applied to the MFD tree right now, it
will be applied along with the other changes in ARM SoC.

Yeah the plan is to merge all patches through the IIO tree.

Thanks,

Immutable branch created based on 5.4-rc1 at:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jic23/iio.git/log/?h=ib-ab8500-5.4-rc1

This is an overly fiddly set to actually build so Linus if you could
do a quick sanity check that would be great. Even better if you could
take a look at relaxing some of the build constraints so this
gets some decent build coverage from the various autobuilders.

I plan on pulling this into my togreg branch in a few minutes, which will
then be pushed out as testing for the autobuilders to maybe figure out
how to build this.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Given the number of these, I'm not that comfortable just
fixing this up. Linus could you do me a follow up patch tiding
up this detail.

I don't want to delay the immutable branch any longer and
would hope the bindings are stable enough that no one will
need this little update in their tree as well as mfd
(or IIO if Lee doesn't pick up the immutable)

Thanks,

Jonathan

For reference immutable branch created at:

Immutable branch created based on 5.4-rc1 at:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jic23/iio.git/log/?h=ib-ab8500-5.4-rc1

Now pulled into the togreg branch of iio.git which I'll push out in a moment
as testing for the autobuilders to see if they can managed to build this.

There is the small tweak to the DT examples that will need to be a followup
patch for. That can go through mfd or myself depending on what Lee would
prefer.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Can you change the subject line to start with an uppercase char.

Else my OCD sense will go into overdrive! ;)

Jonathan: it's fine to rebase the immutable branch for this as long as no-one
has pulled it in I suppose.

Working on a binding example cleanup.

Yours,

True enough. I'll check the obvious branches and hope nothing else
gets through!
