I took time for the Denali driver to catch up with the latest framework.

 - switch over to exec_op() and remove legacy hooks

 - separate controller/chips

 - various cleanups

After the recent refactoring, the NAND driver hooks now take a pointer
to nand_chip. Add to_denali() in order to convert (struct nand_chip *)
to (struct denali_nand_info *) directly. It is more useful than the
current mtd_to_denali().

I changed some helper functions to take (struct nand_chip *). This will
avoid pointer conversion back and forth, and ease further development.

The Denali IP adopts the syndrome page layout (payload and ECC are
interleaved). The *_page_raw() and *_oob() callbacks are complicated
because they must hide the underlying layout used by the hardware,
and always return contiguous in-band and out-of-band data.

Currently, similar code is duplicated to reorganize the data layout.
For example, denali_read_page_raw() and denali_write_page_raw() look
almost the same.

The idea for refactoring is to split the code into two parts:
  [1] conversion of page layout
  [2] what to do at every ECC chunk boundary

For [1], I wrote denali_raw_payload_op() and denali_raw_oob_op().
They manipulate data for the Denali controller's specific page layout
of in-band, out-of-band, respectively.

The difference between write and read is just the operation at
ECC chunk boundaries. For example, denali_read_oob() calls
nand_change_read_column_op(), whereas denali_write_oob() calls
nand_change_write_column_op(). So, I implemented [2] as a callback
passed into [1].

Since (u32 *) can accept an opaque pointer, the explicit casting
from (void *) to (u32 *) is redundant. Change the function argument type
to remove the casts.

Implement ->exec_op().

Remove the deprecated select_chip(), read_byte(), write_byte(),
cmd_ctrl(), and waitfunc().

I will add the third argument to denali_wait_for_irq() in the
following commit. Then, some lines will exceed 80 columns.

Rename 'irq_status' to 'irq_stat'. Saving two characters will avoid
line-wrapping in some places, and keep the code clean.

I replaced uint32_t with u32 in the touched lines. This will reduce
the reports from 'scripts/checkpatch.pl --strict'.

Currently, wait_for_completion_timeout() is always passed in the
hard-coded msec_to_jiffies(1000). There is no specific reason for
1000 msec, but I just chose it long enough.

With the exec_op() conversion, NAND_OP_WAITRDY_INSTR provides more
precise timeout value, depending on the preceding command. Let's use
it to bail out earlier in error case.

I am still keeping the hard-coded values for other higher level hooks
such as page_read, page_write, etc. We know the value of tR, tPROG, but
we have unknowledge about the data transfer speed of the DMA engine.

Use 'bool' type for some function arguments.

 - write (write or read?)
 - raw (the raw access mode or not?)

It is true that denali_nand_info::dma_avail is also boolean, but
I am keeping it as 'int' because 'scripts/checkpatch --strict' would
report the following:

CHECK: Avoid using bool structure members because of possible alignment issues
  - see: https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/11/21/384

I do not think it is a matter here, but I am sticking to the suggestion.

As Documentation/process/coding-style.rst says, choose label names
which say what the goto does. The out_<action> label style is already
used in denali_dt.c. Rename likewise for denali_pci.c

Currently, this driver sticks to the legacy NAND model because
denali_dt.c was up streamed before commit 2d472aba15ff ("mtd: nand:
document the NAND controller/NAND chip DT representation").
However, relying on the dummy_controller is already deprecated.

Switch over to the new controller/chip representation.

The struct denali_nand_info has been split into denali_controller
and denali_chip, to contain the controller data, per-chip data,
respectively.

One problem is, this would change the DT binding. So, as always,
the backward compatibility must be taken into consideration.

In the new binding, the controller node expects

  #address-cells = <1>;
  #size-cells = <0>;

... since the child nodes represent NAND chips.

In the old binding, the controller node may have subnodes, but they
are just MTD partitions.

The denali_dt_is_legacy_binding() exploits it to distinguish old/new
platforms.

Of course, the old binding is allowed only for existing DT files.
Update the binding document.

Use the runtime-detected denali->nbanks instead of hard-coded
DENALI_NR_BANKS (=4).

The actual number of banks depends on the IP configuration, and
can be less than DENALI_NR_BANKS. It is pointless to touch
registers of unsupported banks.

Eliminate the following reports from 'scripts/checkpatch.pl --strict'.

  CHECK: Prefer kernel type 'u8' over 'uint8_t'
  CHECK: Prefer kernel type 'u32' over 'uint32_t'
  CHECK: Alignment should match open parenthesis

I slightly changed denali_check_erased_page() to make it shorter.

just fyi: that suggestion has been removed by:

commit 7967656ffbfa493f5546c0f18bf8a28f702c4baa
Author: Jason Gunthorpe <jgg@ziepe.ca>
Date:   Fri Jan 18 15:50:47 2019 -0700

    coding-style: Clarify the expectations around bool

    There has been some confusion since checkpatch started warning about bool
    use in structures, and people have been avoiding using it.

    Many people feel there is still a legitimate place for bool in structures,
    so provide some guidance on bool usage derived from the entire thread that
    spawned the checkpatch warning.

Thanks, this is good to know.

I will use 'bool' for denali_nand_info::dma_avail in v2.

I will wait for other comments until then.

I also deleted read_buf(), write_buf().

Will fix the log.

What you do is very much appreciated. Thanks for keeping this driver
up-to-date! A few reviews are coming, I'll do another pass for the most
complex patches later.

I had a look at the changes and I don't think this is worth the
trouble. I don't find irq_stat meaningful enough compared to
irq_status. If you want, you may break lines between arguments of a
function instead.

While you are at it, it might be interesting to convert the whole
driver in one go to using u8, u16 and u32?

I'm not sure using 10ms instead of 1000ms is relevant in the below
cases, 10ms is rather short for an IRQ, if your system is under load
you might end up with a timeout, not because the right IRQ did not
fire, but because the handler was not executed yet (it happened to me
in the marvell_nand.c driver recently).

Also, would you mind using a define instead of hardcoding '1000'?

OK, I will drop this patch from v2.

I did this in 11/11.
http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/1038507/

I will move all uint32_t -> u32 conversions to the last patch
if this is worthwhile.

Good point.
Since Linux is not RT-OS, there is no defined worst-case time
until the handler is invoked.

I will add the following to denali_wait_for_irq().

        /* Prolong the IRQ wait time in case the system is under heavy load. */
        timeout_ms += 100;

> Also, would you mind using a define instead of hardcoding '1000'?

I do not think this is worth doing.
