Hello,

We're in the process of implementing a CI test setup for our use case
and HW. Unfortunately this was not up and running when the first 5.0
RT releases became available in March. We're using the Arm64 based
Zynq Ultrascale+ parts from Xilinx.

We have been using 4.18 since last fall with very good results, and we
see this carry through to 4.19.25-rt16. However, for the 5.0.3-rt1
release, cyclictest hits multi thousand microsecond latenies this
continues all the way through to 5.0.21-rt15.

For the 4.19 kernels the v11 zynqmp firmware patch is applied:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/cover/10555405/
Otherwise only a small EPROBE_AGAIN change is needed in
xilinx_uartps.c on top of the rt tag. For the 5.0 kernels there are no
c file changes. Both for 4.19 and 5.0 a custom devicetree is used.

We've tried to make the configs as simple as possible, and for the 5.0
config we start with the 4.19 .config and say N to anything new. (I had
an issue with the first email I'll follow up with the configs if this goes
through).

We do have trace data for a instance where cyclictest hit 5000 uS, but
the file is large 11MB, and I wasn't sure if I should directly attach
it to the email. What is the best way to post or send this?

We would like to bisect this further, but it becomes more difficult
between 4.19.25-rt16 and 5.0.3-rt1.

Some other details: CPU frequency is 1.2 GHz, memory is 2GB, rootfs is debian 9.

For 4.19.25-rt16 we get this (histogram removed):
# ./cyclictest -S -m -n -p 99 -i 200 -h 400 -D 900
# /dev/cpu_dma_latency set to 0us
policy: fifo: loadavg: 2.58 2.77 1.93 1/122 2595

T: 0 ( 2577) P:99 I:200 C:4499985 Min: 5 Act: 6 Avg: 6 Max: 24

T: 3 ( 2580) P:99 I:200 C:4499666 Min: 6 Act: 6 Avg: 6 Max: 26

And for 5.0.3-rt1 we get:
# ./cyclictest -S -m -n -p 99 -i 200 -h 400 -D 900
# /dev/cpu_dma_latency set to 0us
policy: fifo: loadavg: 4.37 4.28 2.88 1/129 2773

T: 3 ( 2760) P:99 I:200 C:4499644 Min: 5 Act: 6 Avg: 6 Max: 34

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you upload the trace to some place? If you don't have storage, just use
bugzilla.kernel.org and open a bug, attach it and post a reference.

Thanks,

Hi Thomas,

I've put the last 60k line of the trace on the bug report here:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204189

Just looking at the timestamp time of cyclicte-2778 I can see the last
two finish_task_switch calls are seperated by 5801 uS. Is just before
that the correct place to be looking?

Right. If I'm reading it correctly, I think I know what's wrong. Can you
please revert:

80e7f3b05365 ("arch/arm64: Add lazy preempt support")

Either that patch is broken or it got broken on forward porting it from
4.19. Need to look with brain awake tomorrow.

Thanks,

	tglx

Yes! this looks like it fixes it. The hash I see is slightly different:
b7f42e8fb48cbe38e4c2d0cab48309aadfa6d032

But the name was the same "arch/arm64: Add lazy preempt support"

I did a quick run with 5.0.19-rt11 with these results:
root@xu5:/opt/rt-tests# ./cyclictest -S -m -n -p 99 -i 200 -h 400 -D 900
# /dev/cpu_dma_latency set to 0us
policy: fifo: loadavg: 0.64 0.74 0.60 1/131 1931

T: 1 ( 1914) P:99 I:200 C:4499899 Min: 5 Act: 8 Avg: 7 Max: 16

We'll do some more testing tomorrow.

So, brain works better now. Can you test the patch below?

The one below should fix it for real.

That still has an issue which needs deeper investigation. Just keep the
offending patch reverted for now.

I still get large latencies, like this:

# /dev/cpu_dma_latency set to 0us

This is with the Lazy preempt commit in there.

I re-read the thread and figured out that you talk about 5.0 while I was
testing on 5.2. On my ARM64 box I end up with

|T: 0 ( 9577) P:99 I:250 C:19979015 Min: 3 Act: 4 Avg: 3 Max: 19
|T: 1 ( 9578) P:99 I:250 C:19978958 Min: 3 Act: 3 Avg: 3 Max: 24
|T: 2 ( 9579) P:99 I:250 C:19978901 Min: 3 Act: 4 Avg: 4 Max: 22
|T: 3 ( 9580) P:99 I:250 C:19978843 Min: 3 Act: 3 Avg: 3 Max: 19

with the patch I sent you. Without it, had spikes between 130us and
160us. Since you said it is not working, I looked more and came up with
this:

diff --git a/arch/arm64/include/asm/preempt.h b/arch/arm64/include/asm/preempt.h
index 3bfad251203b5..ca1c6fe8dd347 100644

+		return false;
 	if (current_thread_info()->preempt_lazy_count)

 	return test_thread_flag(TIF_NEED_RESCHED_LAZY);

but this shouldn't make any difference for you (but it is a bug fix).
Staring more into it, I don't see anything wrong.

v5.0 is not supported any more. Do you think, that you could re-test on
5.2-RT with those two patches I sent you?

Before evaluating the lazy-preempt state it must be ensure that the
preempt-count is zero.

Hi Sebastian,

Yes, for the test yesterday it was using 5.2.0-rt1, I should have
explained that in the first response, since I posted this we have
moved to 5.2.

I added the second patch as well and it was still happening. I took
another trace data set in case this is helpful.

I added an attachment to the bugzilla bug:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=204189

The attachment is here:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=284391

We don't actually need Lazy Preempt, so now that we know what the
issues is we can just turn it off in the config? However I suspect
everyone wants to get to the bottom of what's going on at this point?

thanks,
Paul

both traces have `printk' in it. Could you please explain what it is
doing? It should print something to the console. The printk code in
v4.19 vs later changed and now (by default) ERR levels are printed
immediately and will cause latency spikes.
This would explain the spike but I don't understand how lazy preempt is
related here.

There is no option for lazy-preemption. And yes, we should figure out
what is causing this.

Where in this trace is there a latency spike? I could not see one.

Emergency messages are not involved here. You can see at 84239098us that
systemd is writing to /dev/kmsg, but this is completed (haven only
written to the ring buffer) by 84239118us (20us).

printk schedules an irq_work to wake the printk thread. The irq_work
begins at 84241028us. All it does is call wake_up_interruptible_all() on
the queue.

Hi John,

For the 5.2.0-rt1 trace data set I believe the latency is with
cyclicte-1935 at the end. If I just look at the "cyclicte-1935 ...
finish_task_switch <-__schedule" lines then the delta-t's are mostly
around 200us except for the last delta-t which is >5000us
cyclicte-1935 1d...3.. 84243668us : uao_thread_switch <-__switch_to
cyclicte-1935 1d...3.. 84249436us : finish_task_switch <-__schedule

The actual cyclictest output is shown below:
# ./cyclictest -S -m -n -p 99 -i 200 -h 700 -f -b 5000
# /dev/cpu_dma_latency set to 0us

it prints. Then an interrupts arrives, gets handled, wakes cyclictest.
But instead switching to cyclictest from the irq_exit it gets back to
printing and another interrupt arrives. And then it says that preempt
disable, migrate disable, lazy preempt disable is all one. But
preemption should be enabled. Looking at the whole trace, the preemption
counter is always >= 1 so this might be arm64 specific increment during
recording.

Right, we don't have that. Let me boot my arm64, print something and
check how it goes…

Thanks! Nothing too crazy is happening with printk in my setup. Mostly
I just see systemd messages like this:
[55458.630872] systemd-journald[1072]: Sent WATCHDOG=1 notification.
[55578.632076] systemd-journald[1072]: Sent WATCHDOG=1 notification.

so that explains it. Here, I have

| printk-106 [001] ....111 610.156787: pl011_read <-pl011_console_putchar
| printk-106 [001] d..h211 610.156788: irq_find_mapping <-__handle_domain_irq

| cyclictest-802 [001] d...3.. 610.156815: finish_task_switch <-__schedule

so it seems to works but I *think* that at 610.156813 shouldn't be there
and it should switch to cyclictest. But if it is the broken irq-exit
path then this should fix it:

This doesn't look like it's against 5.2.y-rt or 5.0.y-rt? I don't see

Ah, I see now I messed up manually applying the first one. I'll retest
that then then apply this and test.

After correctly applying this patch I do not see large latencies, >15M

I apologize for messing this up the first time. I had copied the text
strait from gmail and it failed to apply. If I had used 'patch -l' or
copied it from the archive, then it directly applies and I wouldn't
have messed up when I put it in manually. Just for reference here's
how I screwed it up:
