No. Both those firmware files work just fine on my openSUSE system.
The md5sums for the firmware are as follows:
1850c1308fbcd95e9f6a7f58ede1e35f /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723befw_36.bin
a2c544e90d41fa9097b18ba86f11bec9 /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723befw_36.bin.xz
bc828ddc6cd700abb79a8df5794bcf04 /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723befw.bin
7c310f301623cf16211ef5b4a3a3078d /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723befw.bin.xz
The sizes for the uncompressed modules are:
31762 /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723befw_36.bin
30746 /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8723befw.bin

This seems to be very strange. Does anybody have an explanation for this strange behaviour? I just searched the entire kernel source for the message "firmware is too big".
The only place it was found was "drivers/media/platform/s5p-mfc/s5p_mfc_ctrl.c:
mfc_err("MFC firmware is too big to be loaded\n");". I do not think
that is the problem. :)
Have you tried any other distros? A Live Medium should let you know if it has
the same problem.

I tried booting a Debian Buster LXFE live iso. It has NO wireless firmware at
all, and is completely useless unless you have a wired network!
What files are in /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/?

Thanks a lot, Larry. this computer is not mine. it belongs to a refugee coming from Georgia (formerly ussr) ... She got this ASUS stuff from a company in Litvania ... strange history. I am working on that problem on a voluntary base ... and this started already 3 weeks ago ...
