This patch series adds the basic driver support for Arasan NAND Flash
controller.
We are reinitiating the patch series by fixing the comments given by
Miquel and Boris.
Major changes are exec_op() implementation related.
Rebased to 4.19 nand tree.
Tested MT29F32G08ABCDBJ4.

 - Added the SPDX tags
Changes in v8:
 - Implemented setup_data_interface hook
 - fixed checkpatch --strict warnings
 - Added anfc_config_ecc in read_page_hwecc

- Adapted the new frameowrk changes related to ecc and ooblayout
- Disabled the clocks after the nand_reelase
- Now using only one completion object
- Boris suggessions like adapting cmd_ctrl and rework on read/write byte
  are not implemented and i will patch them later
- Also check_erased_ecc_chunk for erase and check for is_vmalloc_addr will
  implement later once the basic driver is mainlined.
Changes in v5:
- Renamed the driver filei as arasan_nand.c
- Fixed all comments relaqted coding style

Hi Naga,

A user of Xilinx BSP reported a problem with lockdep that I can see is
not yet fixed in this code:

The controller structure has a lock which is not initialized here. You
should not initialize the waitqueue manually neither and instead use
nand_controller_init(&nfc->controller).

More to come.

Thanks,
Miquèl

Looks like you have one of these smart controllers where everything is
hardcoded and new commands (like vendor specific commands) can't be
supported, and we're back to abusing ->exec_op(), just like ->cmdfunc()
was abused.

Don't you have a way to send raw CMD/ADDR/DATA cycles? If not, then
we'll have to consider other options, because I don't want to go back
to the situation we are in with ->cmdfunc().

Maybe I already asked, but is there a public spec for this IP?

Thanks,

Boris

Ok. Just now I saw marvell nand driver. I will update accordingly.

Actually hardcoding commands with ->exec_op() interface in the driver is really looking weird.
I agree with that.
But as per the spec, for every command, we need to set respective bit in PROG_REG and because
Of this, we need to track the commands for each exec_op() call.

As I said above, for each command we need to set a bit in PROG_REG, to initiate the operation.
The only conflicting thing is that, setting a respective bit in PROG_REG based on the command
Needs command tracking.

I didn't find any public spec for this IP, but you can find the register data base at below link
https://www.xilinx.com/html_docs/registers/ug1087/ug1087-zynq-ultrascale-registers.html
and click on NAND.
There we have Command Reg(Off: 0x0C) and Program Reg(Off: 0x10), which describes the usage.

Also not in depth but at least something is documented in TRM
https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/user_guides/ug1085-zynq-ultrascale-trm.pdf
we can find the programming model in chapter 25.
Please let me know if I missed anything.

I had a closer look at those documents (which I remember reading a
while back BTW), and the PROG bits are indeed not described in detail.

Still, I think it's close to what we have on Marvell SoC, where those
'modes' actually encode a specific sequence of timing that is used for
well-known commands (like ERASE, RESET, READID) but could be used the
same way with other opcodes assuming the sequence is the same.

So, you should use the pattern approach, but not like you do: you
should have a dedicated hook for each pattern which would set PROG bit,
and then a generic helper to fill all other information (opcode,
address cycles, ...).

Thanks for your suggestion and are you saying something like Marvell parser patterns for nfcv1 as below?

static const struct nand_op_parser marvell_nfcv1_op_parser = NAND_OP_PARSER(
	/* Naked commands not supported, use a function for each pattern */
	NAND_OP_PARSER_PATTERN(
		marvell_nfc_read_id_type_exec,
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_CMD_ELEM(false),
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_ADDR_ELEM(false, MAX_ADDRESS_CYC_NFCV1),
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_DATA_IN_ELEM(false, 8)),
	NAND_OP_PARSER_PATTERN(
		marvell_nfc_erase_cmd_type_exec,
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_CMD_ELEM(false),
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_ADDR_ELEM(false, MAX_ADDRESS_CYC_NFCV1),
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_CMD_ELEM(false),
		NAND_OP_PARSER_PAT_WAITRDY_ELEM(false)),
	);
That means, a separate hook for each pattern, is that you are suggesting?

Thanks,
Naga Sureshkumar Relli.

Ok, I will update the driver and will send next version.

Wait a bit before sending a new version, there were other things I
wanted to comment on, this one was just the main issue.

In your example it's not an "or" since both are defined.

     clock-names

Can't you detect that based on the compatible (or thanks to a
register). If it's something you choose when configuring the IP and
can't detect at runtime I guess it's fine.

Hm, not sure you need to define partitions in this example, but if
you do, please define your partitions in a 'partitions' subnode:

			partitions {
				compatible = "fixed-partitions";
				#address-cells = <1>;
				#size-cells = <1>;

				partition@0 {
					reg = <0x0 0x1000000>;
					...
				};
				...
			};

Just nitpicking, but you can place them on the same line:

	depends on HAS_IOMEM && HAS_DMA

Blank line missing here.

Please define drop this definition and pass the string directly to
driver->name. The driver is for a nand controller, so make it clear,
also, it's just a detail but I prefer '-' to '_', so, how about
"arasan-nand-controller"?

> +#define EVNT_TIMEOUT_MSEC		1000

It's unusual to have EVNT, it's usually EVT or EVENT.

> +#define STATUS_TIMEOUT			2000

Is it in milliseconds? Please add the proper _<UNIT> prefix here.

Can you try to group registers offsets with their fields?

And why is it an s32 and not a u32?

Please make sure you actually need to redefine all these fields. Looks
like some them could be extracted directly from the nand_op_instr
objects.

What's the difference between bch and bchmode?

So that means you only support chips with a single CS, right?

No, really, this looks wrong. If you need special handling for the
read_page() case, implement it in the chip->ecc.read_page[_raw]() hooks.

Again, this should go in chip->ecc.read_page().

Pass a nand_chip object directly and use u8 instead of uint8_t. This
applies to all other internal functions you define.

You should use virt_is_valid() not is_vmalloc_addr(). Alternatively,
you can just set the NAND_USE_BOUNCE_BUFFER flag in chip->options, and
you'll be guaranteed to have a DMA-able buffer passed to the
chip->ecc.read/write_page_[raw]() hooks.

Where do you get that delay from? Please don't use random delays.

Hm, why do you need to do that? The core already provide appropriate
helpers abstracting that for you. What's missing?

We have an helper doing that for you. Plus, ->waitfunc() should not be
implemented when ->exec_op() is implemented.

I'm really not a big fan of this ->iswriteoob var. Not sure why it's
used for.

No, that's not how we do. Just take the OOB bytes placed in
chip->oob_poi.

I'm sure we can add an onfi_timing_mode field in nand_sdr_timings so
that you don't have to guess it based on ->tRC.

Please don't guess the opcodes. The pattern descriptors are just here
to describe a sequence of CMD, ADDR and DATA cycles, nothing more. The
CMD opcodes can be tweaked if needed as long as the sequence is the
same.

And the reset pattern desc looks correct too.

You only support one CS per chip, so maybe you should check that
num < 1.

I haven't finished reviewing the driver but there are still a bunch of
things that look strange, for instance, your ->read/write_page()
implementation looks suspicious. Let's discuss that before you send a
new version.

Also, please run checkpatch --strict and fix all errors and warnings
(unless you have a good reason not to).

Thanks,

Boris

In our previous discussion (https://lore.kernel.org/patchwork/patch/748901/)
We decided to have compatible strings like " compatible = "<soc-vendor>,<ip-revision>", "arasan,<ip-revision>";"
So it should be either of these.
so I will write something like below
"Possible values are  "xlnx,zynqmp-nand"
			"arasan,nfc-v3p10"
And in example I will mention any one compatible.
Is it ok?

Ok, will correct it in next version.

There is no way to select DMA when configuring the IP.
But it has internal DMA and there is a register to select PIO or DMA while starting a transfer.
So if user really don't want DMA, then we will never set DMA in the code based on DT property.

Ok, just now I saw Documentation/devicetree/bindings/mtd/marvell-nand.txt, I will update it accordingly in next version.

Hm, why do you need arasan,nfc-v3p10 at all if it's supposed to be
overloaded by a soc specific compat?

If it's a purely SW choice, then is shouldn't be described in the DT.
You can use a module param, but I'm not even sure why one would want to
disable DMA.

Ok, I will correct it.
>
> And why is it an s32 and not a u32?
To monitor NAND_CMD_STATUS.
Sometimes core will just send status command without reading back the status data and later
It will try to read one byte using ->exec_op().
So Arasan has FLASH_STS register and whenever we initiate a status command, the controller
Will update this register with the value returned by the flash device.
So we need to return this value when core is asking about 1 byte status value without issuing the command.
And in driver we are using memset(nfc_op, 0, sizeof(struct anfc_op)), this will make cmnds[4] to zeros but 0x0 is also
NAND_CMD_READ0, so inorder to differentiate whether to give status data or not, I just assigned
	nfc_op->cmnds[0] = NAND_CMD_NONE;

May be this case we can now eliminate as per your suggestion(defining a separate hook for each pattern) and thanks for that.

Ok, all these values are getting updated in anfc_parse_instructions()

Let me try this approach, implementing ecc.read_page().

Ok, i will do that.

Sure, I will update it.

As per your suggestion I will use core helpers, and I will remove these random delays.

I didn't find any helper API that will do this command and page framing or maybe I am wrong.
The issue here is, I have to update command and address fields. I found one helper nand_fill_column_cycles(),
But it is static.
And also I just referred the driver drivers/mtd/nand/raw/nand_hynix.c, where hynix_nand_reg_write_op() is
Doing similar stuff, updating addr value.
And let me try as per your suggestion(use directly chip->oob_poi) if that works, I will remove all this code.

Ok, got it, I will change it.

This is to differentiate whether the current operation is an OOB read or Page read.
Anyway, as you pointed, I will use chip->ecc.read/write_page_[raw]() hooks, which will eliminate these also.

In anfc_parse_instructions():

+			nfc_op->data_instr = instr;
+			nfc_op->type = NAND_OP_DATA_IN_INSTR;

This looks pointless.

+			nfc_op->data_instr_idx = op_id;
+			break;
+		case NAND_OP_DATA_OUT_INSTR:
+			nfc_op->data_instr = instr;
+			nfc_op->type = NAND_OP_DATA_IN_INSTR;
+			nfc_op->data_instr_idx = op_id;
+			break;
+		case NAND_OP_WAITRDY_INSTR:
+			nfc_op->rdy_timeout_ms = instr->ctx.waitrdy.timeout_ms;

This one also.

+			nfc_op->rdy_delay_ns = instr->delay_ns;

And this one too.

Once you'll have a per pattern callback, I suppose you won't need it
anymore.

Then something like "strength" or "ecc_strength" would be more
meaningful.

Actually we put these compatible strings based on the comments on v7 series.
Anyway I will just keep "xlnx,zynqmp-nand" as compatible.

UBIFS doesn't work with DMA, hence we are using a DT property to operate the driver in IO.
But as you pointed (use virt_is_valid()), with this we can switch our driver to operate in PIO or DMA.
I will remove this from DT.

I don't get why UBIFS would not work with DMA? This is a significant
drawback.

UBIFS uses vmalloc'ed buffers whereas for DMA it should be DMA-able, i.e uses physically contiguous memory.
Hence we used a DT property to make it work in PIO mode.
Some discussion happened in https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9675007/.
But whatever I said above, is with older arasan_nand driver, now anyway we have
virt_addr_valid(). By checking this we can use DMA or PIO.
This is the information I have, but I may be wrong.

Thanks,

My recommandation: set the NAND_USE_BOUNCE_BUFFER and always use DMA.

If Rob said you should have both, then keep both, but the description
should match, because "arasan,nfc-v3p10" cannot be used alone, it has
to be placed next to a "<vendor>,nfc-<soc>" string.

I have the changes ready with me which will address all your comments given to this series.
