I'm trying to use a Keyspan USA-19 to enable access to a Palm m500 on a
serial cradle. Whenever I try to modprobe the keyspan module I get the
message "Warning: /lib/modules/2.4.5/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.o
symbol for parameter vendor not found"... the module loads anyway, but
doesn't seem to detect the device.

As far as I can see, everything seems to be setup correctly (.config
attached). Pointers and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx!

It seems to be working now, although I'm not really sure what fixed
it... my kernel configuration is essentially unchanged. I'm suspicious
that the adapter might have a bad connection, or something similar.

Cheers!

* usbserial/keyspan module load race [was: 2.4.5 keyspan driver]

Ok, I've figured out how to reproduce the problem.

Initially, usbcore and usb-uhci are the only USB drivers loaded. If I
load usbserial and keyspan seperately ("modprobe usbserial ; sleep 5 ;
modprobe keyspan") everything works correctly. The problem occurs when
I let modprobe pull in usbserial behind the scenes as a dependency. The
keyspan driver (usually) doesn't detect the device, and /proc/modules
forever lists it as "initializing". The module won't unload at this
point, so the driver's unusable until the next reboot.

Unfortunately I have no idea how/where to fix this. Anyone want to
take a stab at it?

Which keyspan driver are you doing this with, keyspan_pda.o or
keyspan.o?

Have you tried having the linux-hotplug scripts install the driver for
you when you plug the device in? <http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net/>

thanks,

It wasn't quite as cooperative today, but after a few attempts I was
able to reproduce it.

     root@glitch[~]# modprobe keyspan
Warning: /lib/modules/2.4.5/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.o symbol for parameter vendor not found
     Segmentation fault

     root@glitch[~]# ps -ef|grep "[m]odprobe"
     root@glitch[~]#

     root@glitch[~]# egrep "usb|key" /proc/modules
     keyspan 22112 (initializing)
     usbserial 17296 0 [keyspan]
     usb-uhci 21200 0 (unused)
     usbcore 48688 1 [keyspan usbserial usb-uhci]

I browsed the full ps output as well, but I didn't find anything
looking like what you described.

I tried it both ways. It didn't seem to make any difference.

Here's something interesting...

Twice today while I was playing with usbserial/keyspan I got the
following:

     root@glitch[~]# modprobe keyspan
     usbserial.c: ezusb_set_reset_Re254f24d- 1 failed
     keyspan.c: ezusb_writememory failed for Keyspanfirmware (-110 0000 e0b4518d 3)
     usbserial.c: ezusb_set_reset_Re254f24d- 0 failed

Afterwards, not only did the keyspan driver still work, but it was
*much* faster than before. I was able to perform a full sync with the
Palm in about 15-20 seconds, while it was taking about two minutes
before.

Weird!

I'm pretty sure that I've hit this with CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_GENERIC set.
I'll retry it, just to be sure.

After adding CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_GENERIC I wasn't able to hang the module
while initializing (I only made three tries, tho), but the driver
didn't seem to work either.

Can you try the keyspan_pda.o driver and see if it also gives you
problems?

I posted a patch to linux-usb-devel that should solve the "vendor symbol
not defined" bug for you.

thanks,

I've updated to 2.4.6, and applied the patch from linux-usb-devel. The
keyspan_pda driver doesn't seem to detect the device at all. The
keyspan driver detects it and creates /dev/usb/tts/0, but shows the
same problems as before.

Something else which may or may not help... I hooked my modem up to the
Keyspan USA-19 adapter to see if that would make any difference. pppd
wasn't able to dial out (no response from the modem), but the following
was logged during the attempt:
