Are you trying to mount a SCSI disk as root without having the correct SCSI
driver IN the kernel?

Hello,

so I tested v3.7-rc7-163-g3c46f3d and got a kernel panic.
Usually I am running Ubuntu on my Dell Latitutde E6520,
which usually works fine except some sound issues.

I did this:

git clone https://github.com/torvalds/linux.git
cd linux
make deb-pkg
cd ..
dpkg -i linux-headers-3.7.0-rc7+_3.7.0-rc7+-3_amd64.deb
dpkg -i linux-image-3.7.0-rc7+_3.7.0-rc7+-3_amd64.deb
dpkg -i linux-libc-dev_3.7.0-rc7+-3_amd64.deb

Rebooting yields a panic,

How would I help further fixing this issue?

Hi,
  after upgrading to linux kernel 3.xx I get kernel panic on boot unless 
I use ACPI=off in the boot parameters this happens with both Ubuntu 
11.10 and Fedora 16. The mainboard is an Intel S875WP1-E running a 
Pentuim 4 3ghz with 3gig RAM in single-channel mode. I have performed a 
Bios upgrade just in case tha ACPI tables were corrupt but it makes no 
difference. Currently running 2.6.38-11-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP (Linux 
Mint) with no issues. I can provide a screenshot if you wish but it's 
looking like it's ACPI related as above.

Running a stock FC5 kernel with a P4 and HT enabled..
After 1 month uptime with no problems I get this out of the blue. The
system practically hanged, only ICMP was working, had to reboot.Could
it be related to cpuspeed or amavisd (the latter seems unlikely)... ?

I have got a kernel panic when running a heavy load socket processing.
This server is written by my self and when the clients reached 10k,

I booted my system with 2.5.66-bk1 and switched every 3 minutes between 
init 5 and init 3. This resulted in several faults from anything that 
was run at the time. Attached is the latest dmesg with the faults from 
uname and X at the end. Also attached is a panic that has an unknown 
process. It looked like a buffer overrun.  The ? characters are 
replacements for the high-ascii characters that I couldn't type.
I hope this can be fixed. I can reproduce the locking and crashing, but 
each time it is something different that dies. Sometimes I get a kernel 
panic, but it reboots itself before I can write anything down.

This problem started after I began using 2.5.66. I first noticed it when 
I would exit KDE before reboots. Things would lock up. Turned NMI 
watchdog on as I was instructed.

Hi, 

Lately I am having kernel panic's, and I have no idea why.. I have not changed anything lately except for regular
software updates. I am using Debian Woody 3.0, packages updated daily, with a 2.4.18 kernel. I have not noticed any
pattern in occurance, the other day it happened just after I dialed my ISP, about 20 minutes ago I was simply using
vim from my windows box via ssh, and just now I had it freeze again after typing `vim .<tab>`..

I also noticed that on reboot, it presents me with "(none) login:" rather than using my hostname of xion as per
usual.. an `ifconfig` shows nothing, ifconfig simply lists lo, and no eth0. Another reboot fixes this. This has only
happened once, I just had another kernel panic and this time on reboot my network is fine, so I am not sure whether
this is related.

I have a PC with an Athlon CPU, which has problems with newer kernel-versions. (see lspci-output below)

If I want to boot current Knoppix or Mandrake 8.2beta3 install cds (both based on kernel 2.4.17), it says:

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

It worked fine with the older mandrake 8.1 with kernel 2.4.8.

Any ideas? How can I help to fix this?

Hello everyone,

I've been having a problem with kernel panics and I'm hoping someone can
suggest something.

Here is the specs for the machine:
Tyan dual Athlon (S2462)
2 MP-1800+ CPUs
2 GB ECC DDR (4 x 512MB)
2 GB of swap space
RedHat 7.2 install /w custom kernel

I've tried several kernels, but the following oops's were on 2.4.17
compiled with high memory, SMP, and P3 optimizations.  This machine is under
a very heavy CPU, IO, and network load.  I've seen it run for days and I've
seen it lockup every 3 hours.  There doesn't seem to be any pattern other
than it dies while under heavy load.  Another thing of interest is that it
does a lot of network traffic through the loopback device (127.0.0.1).  The
dmulti process listed in the oops's below is basically a proxy that uses the
loopback device to talk to other processes on the same machine.  It's
transferring 20-30 mbits of data 24/7.

The following was logged when the machine just removed one process.  The
process could not be restarted because the network port 119 was not released
when the process died.  I had to restart the machine.

You're making the assumption that an incomplete patch is useless and 
has no design pricipals behind it.  What I disagree with is the design 
of mempool, not the implementation.  The design for reservations is to 
use enforced accounting limits to achive the effect of seperate memory 
pools.  Mempool's design is to build seperate pools on top of existing 
pools of memory.  Can't you see the obvious duplication that implies?

The first implementation of the reservation patch is full of bogosities, 
I'm the first one to admit that.  But am I going to go off and write an 
entirely new patch that fixes everything and gets the design right to 
replace mempool?  Not with the current rate of patches being ignored.
