I receive messages with about 40 lines of headers each, and most of them
have less than 30 lines of body, so on this point I must agree with Folkert.
Since we have long threads, most of the messages are small replies, like this
one I'm writing now. I'm fairly certain it will still have headers longer than
body.

Cheers,
Willy

Hi Folkert.

I've just checked my archive of Linux-Kernel for emails during
the interval stated (posted from 00:44:02 to 16:59:59 on 4th
May 2003), and I can't even come close to the figures you quote,
although they're a lot better than the previous ones.

Here's what I see for that interval:

     Total number of messages: 65
     Total number of writers: 42
     Number of people who wrote >1 message: 11

As far as my email archive is concerned, I can report these
statistics as far as claimed postage dates are concerned for
mail that has been received 25 March 2003 or later:

     Date Posted   Total Messages
     ~~~~~~~~~~~   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     12 Mar 2003          1
     23 Mar 2003          1
     24 Mar 2003          1
     25 Mar 2003        340
     26 Mar 2003        287
     27 Mar 2003        334
     28 Mar 2003        226
     29 Mar 2003        105
     30 Mar 2003         89
     31 Mar 2003        158
Note those three emails posted days before they were received.
Inspection of the Received headers thereon indicates in each
case that the local system clock was way out, all three being
actually posted on 3 April 2003.
I received a total of 7,294 emails marked as being posted between
00:00:00 on 1 April 2003 and 23:59:59 on 30 April 2003, and a
total of 2,693 emails marked as being posted between 00:00:00 on
1st May 2003 and 23:59:59 on 10th May 2003. That is an average of
243 per day during April and 269 per day during May, or an overall
average of 250 per day from 1st April to 10th May inclusive.
For reference, I have also received one email that claims to have
been posted on 5 July 2003, but the received headers suggest it was
actually posted on 8 May 2003 instead. This is not included in the
above totals.
Also, some of the other statistics just don't make sense...
 > Total number of lines: 132322
 > Total header length (lines): 90312
 > The header is on average 68.25% of the message (lines).
Other than test messages, I don't think I've ever seen an email
with more header than body, so I have to be suspicious of this
particular statistic.
Best wishes from Riley.
It was a surprise to me that I'm actually still sending them :-) Though
I had disabled that cronjob. Will disable it in 5 minutes. If there's
anyone still interested in those statistics, please contact me directly.
The "isemail" parameter to array::addstring() calls out to
get_email_address() to get the string, which breaks the string on any
' ' character (though, oddly, not other kinds of whitespace), while
hunting for a run of consecutive characters between '<' and '>'.
Otherwise, a non-blank-breaking convention that performs its work on
the raw string passed to it is used.
i.e. the error is a one-liner where the get_email_address() convention
is incorrectly specified by passing a 0 instead of a 1 as the second
argument of array::addstring() when the header matches "Organization:".
I don't. I do, however, have a vested interest in getting the affected
stats accurately reported again.
But I wonder if you really want to fix a text munching program written
in c++. What an interesting choice.
You still haven't fixed the bug in your script. Please post the
This part is pretty pointless, given that you measure only one week,
isn't it?
Same here. Would be nice if you could turn those two off for the
moment. You can turn them back on when calculating for larger time
periods.
When looking further down the statistics mail one finds
this table:
It implies that the statistics were for April 19 to April 25
rather than April 19 to April 20... However, that table too
seems a bit odd, as I am used to getting about the same number
of mails per day, any day of the week (and there are definitely
no days when I get as few as 6 or 16 mails from this list)....
Huh.  Our spam filters are pretty good here but I sort through the spam
because sometimes stuff gets caught that shouldn't.  I find it hard to
believe I'm deleting 1700 spam messages a day, that's too many.  Are
you positive about the numbers?
Can you merge MUAs by name only up to the slash (ignoring version
numbers), so that all of the Mutts are combined, e.g.?
Thanks for the stats.
Err, I dunno how to read these stats but I am pretty sure that we did not
see 1783 messages in 32 hours which is what the numbers above imply.
No, that is a good idea.  All these Mutt entries are silly.
Further, I bet mailers like Mozilla and Evolution would be very near the
top if all the versions were merged.
Also, as someone else I believe pointed out, there is a bug. F.e.,
"Ximian" should be "Ximian Evolution" -- it looks like anything after
the space is being ignored, which is no good.  I like Randy's idea of
ignoring up to the '/'.
Could you merge different versions of the same MUA?
I.e., just use up to the '/'.
Or is that a bad idea?
Did your script break? It seems the first word only appears here.
I would expect it to take a few regexes but so far $mta =~ s/\W.*$//
would do the trick to produce Mutt, ELM, Mulberry, Sylpheed,
Mew, Ximian and even FlokEdit.
Problem is: what part is version-information and what is name?
For Mutt 1.0, ELM 3.6 it's clear; it's the number part.
But what about:
FlokEdit peanutbutterrelease
FlokEdit RMDrelease
?
Yeah. I doubt that that 'pine.<...>' in the message-id is a
standard thing. Like: I think you can put anything in it as
long as it's unique.
And it wouldn't hurt to aggregate versions.  This is really
just a top-6 list.
 1]  476 Mutt (most common versions versions)
 2]   60 ELM [version 2.5 PL6]
 3]   55 Mulberry/2.2.1 (Linux/x86)
 4]   42 Sylpheed version 0.8.9 (GTK+ 1.2.10; i586-pc-linux-gnu)
 5]   42 Mew version 2.1 on Emacs 21.1 / Mule 5.0 (SAKAKI)
 6]   41 Ximian Evolution 1.2.1 (1.2.1-4)
Wonder where "unknown" would land if counted.
Pine doesn't add an X-Mailer: but you can easily spot
it from the Message-ID.  I suspect that Folkert is
missing a few more mailers that way...
No but a few wery active mutt users. The useragent stat should be tied
to users it dose not look like that is done. Since it was only 369
different writers alot have to use more than one mailer to get that
list. So it dose not reflect the popularity of any mailer.
I don't think Pine adds a user-agent header.  You could probably tell
how many Pine users there are by checking by message ID.
