It looks like ac97 on SMP is still broken. On dual processor machine, boot
hangs with the last message displayed:

Jun 5 01:17:58 frogmorton kernel: ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id:
0x8384:0x7609 (SigmaTel STAC9721/23)

If I build kernel without SMP support, boot doesn't hang.

Alan,

I wonder if you could confirm whether the usb-ohci module should be loaded
automatically if I have the following line in modules.conf (this is with
2.4.21-rc6-ac2)

probeall usb-interface usb-ohci

I have a Dell 2650 server with a ServerWorks chipset and its not being loaded
automagically at boot as it does under my Mandrake kernels.

00:0f.2 USB Controller: ServerWorks OSB4/CSB5 OHCI USB Controller (rev 05)
(prog-if 10 [OHCI])
Subsystem: ServerWorks OSB4/CSB5 OHCI USB Controller
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5
        Memory at fe100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]

Cheers,

Mark.

No. You have to modprobe 'usb-interface' somewhere in your rc scripts.
See the manpage for modules.conf

What distribution are you using?

In debian, /etc/modules contains the modules, which are loaded at system
startup.

Mandrake 9.1

I've never needed to put it into /etc/modules before, so maybe Mandrake does
it differently.

I'll try that - thanks

Mark.

Depends how your system is set up. The following is working fine on RH
for me.

alias usb-controller ehci-hcd

Could be Mandrake do magic or compile it in ?

What soundcard is this. That matters for debugging because the locking
stuff is all on the soundcard not the codec side.

It's a SoundBlaster Live! (no, I'm not really excited about it, that's the
official way to spell it 8-)) emu10k1 is compiled as a module.

I can try it with a different sound card. I have a Turtle Beach card around
here somewhere that I think works.

I tried putting this on my Fujitsu Lifebook P2120 (Crusoe based), and it
freezes the system hard when using hwclock to sync the system clock with the
hardware clock.

Running hwclock under strace in the init script prints out it opening
/dev/rtc (for the second time), and then sometimes dying in the middle
of printing out the following ioctl: "ioctl(3, RTC_UIE_ON, 0)", and more
often in printing out the following read().

Removing the rtc module lets the system boot up.

2.4.21-rc7 works fine. The config file I'm using can be found at

    http://lorien.emufarm.org/~duvall/.config

What bits should I start hacking away to narrow down the problem, or is
this known?

Thanks,
Danek

See if its a specific in or out instruction in the rtc driver

What's the best way to do that? Any way do that in userspace, or will I
have to hack the driver code? If the latter, what do I do?

Thanks,
Danek

I too am having problems with this sound driver on my system with this
kernel release.

After booting the system, I found it would crash (blinking keyboard
lights) within a few minutes of starting xwindows. Upon seeing the
notes about the AC'97 driver causing problems, I commented it out from
the /etc/modules.conf and I have been stable (although mute) since.

The motherboard is an Intel D845GBV (uni-processor), and according to
Intel the (built in) sound controller (quoted from the spec sheet
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bv/index.htm) "Audio subsystem for
AC '97 processing using the Analog Devices AD1981A codec featuring
SoundMAX Cadenza"

Although I don't have a copy of the oops message I'm sure if it would
help I can set up a serial console to catch it.

The lines I had in the /etc/modules.conf (that I commented out) are:

alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
alias sound-slot-0-0 i810_audio
alias char-major-14 i810_audio
alias sound-slot-1 btaudio
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S
 >/dev/null 2>&1 || :

my .config file (for the sound) is:
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_ALI5455 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_BT878 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_EMU10K1 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_FUSION is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CS4281 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ES1370 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ES1371 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_ESSSOLO1 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MAESTRO is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MAESTRO3 is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_FORTE is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_ICH=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_RME96XX is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_SONICVIBES is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_TRIDENT is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MSNDCLAS is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_MSNDPIN is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_VIA82CXXX is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_OSS is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_TVMIXER=m

Let me know what else I can provide to help.

Jeff
