Someone (sorry I forgot who) said they would submit a DRM update.
This is needed to make current XFree86 happy with some cards.

I'm going to submit 3 local-APIC fixes from 2.5/2.6.

The "must have" feature of 2.4 was iptables. You simply can't do as good
a firwall or network device without stateful sockets. Other than device
drivers the kicker of 2.6 is crypto. If you need the features you really
will go.

Latency in 2.4 seems better, at least for some of the stuff I use, and I
see the new scheduler and NPTL are in the latest Redhat 2.4, so those
are not compelling for most people.

I would still like to see all the responsiveness features, VM, low
latency, preempt current. The O(1) scheduler is still getting better
daily in 2.6, about 2.4.25 that should be ready. Then when what we have
is working as well as it can, we can add features.

Anyway, here some info about it:

Patch information:

- Update XFree DRM code to recent code from 2.4.22-rc2-ac3
- DRI now works with XFree v4.3.0
- ATI IGP chipset support added incl. pci ids, AGP support
- Initial VIA CLE266 and S3 Savage DRM modules merges from VIA
   (These are marked up with some warnings and need a chunk of clean up work)
- enabled 3dlabs GMX 2000 config option

All compiles cleanly, at least r128 (ati rage 128) works perfectly with XFree 
v4.3.0. I have such a card :)

You can also reason the oter way around: Why not include ALSA in 2.4 and

Within a year, a lot of distributions will start offering both 2.4 and
2.6.  The only reason to run the distribution's 2.4 kernel will be if
the 2.6 one doesn't work on the user's hardware.  In that case, we
will want to add support to/fix 2.6 as a priority, rather than adding
support to 2.4.

Only users with specific requirements will replace a distribution's
2.6 kernel with their own compiled 2.4 kernel, and those users will
typically be knowledgeable enough to use different trees, pre-patches,
out of tree drivers, or whatever is necessary to add the features,
(such as ALSA), to 2.4.

Maybe longer than the 2.4.22 development cycle, but I think almost
everybody agrees that too much was done between 2.4.20 and 2.4.21.

I think new development should concentrate on 2.6, otherwise it's just
going to be delayed longer than necessary.

yes, it is more important the possible changes in the VM.

I2C 2.8.0: (the same happens with alsa FIXME) (discussed in another thread).

XFS: the XFS needs yes or yes to patch kernel, is used enough in many instalations,
but as consequence modifies several archives of kernel, which does difficult to be able
to include some patch more after this, like for example some of security (lids, etc...).

Conclusion: I vote by VM (priority) and XFS.

and... if one is clueless enough to be unable to compile ALSA outside the
kernel or to try 2.6, then he's a good candidate for those user-friendly
distros who ship it. Same for i2c.

Not that I wouldn't like to see those included, but there are far more urgent
things as you said, and not everything will get its way to 2.4.23.

Indeed. I'm kind of courious though. The linux developers just spent

ALSA is coming in 2.6 and installs easily enough on 2.4. In view of this,
MHO is that the upheaval for 2.4 users is not worth the tradeoff for what
looks like minimal gain. 2.4 is stable, modulo bug fixes and major brain
farts. If anything, I'd rather see XFS integrated into 2.4 than ALSA.

My 2*10^^-2 dollars.

I think VM are more important that any other things at this moment, but
is not the only thing to take care of.

According to this last reason, most of the features added to the stable
tree never havent been merged because that features will be included in
development series... :)

Why many drivers are backported from 2.5/2.6 series to 2.4? I think the
reason is because is good for stable series take a few bits from latest
kernel code for prevent obsolete and/or very old drivers.

I know this have some risks of generating more bugs in stable kernel,
but in many times, has been made backports without so much resistance ;)

Last time I checked i810 audio did NOT work under 2.4. That is why I 
switched to ALSA. (The intel8x0 driver is perfectly stable for me)
IMO, OSS should be phased out quickly as it is wasting energy to 
maintain it. Those maintainers could be fixing the broken ALSA drivers 
instead of wasting their time trying to fix the broken OSS drivers.
ALSA should be included in 2.4 to help make the 2.4 to 2.6 hop easier.

All you have to do is install the packages on alsa-project.org and just 
recompile the alsa-driver package everytime you compile a new kernel.
Be sure to be root when installing the ALSA stuff.

Like the one in drivers/sound/adlib_card.c/opl3.c; which doesn't release
its io region when the module is removed (sent a workaround twice,
got ignored ;(  )

Hum "stable"? Well, sorta. I have some machines that only work with OSS
(CMI8330 only works with OSS Windows Sound System driver, not in sound
blaster emu and not with Alsa in spite of the driver).

The killer argument is it's easy to install separately.
./configure --with-cards=YOURS && make && make install - et voilà.

I think the 'more urgent things to be fixed' point is important.

Only a certain amount of patches can go in to 2.4.23 if we want to
keep this a short development cycle, and efforts to stabilise 2.4 so
that embedded users who are still using 2.2 have something to migrate
to are important.

I'd like to see 2.4 become the stable choice for embedded users that
2.2 is now, before 2.6 becomes the standard for new non-embedded
machines within a year.

Well, there are two types of patches/add-ons out there :
  - those which always apply very well and very easily : ALSA, i2c, ...
  - those which are very sensible to frequent core changes : VM, FS, ...

ACPI and IDE were of the later type, and were included lately, one at a time.
This greatly eased the production of "alternative" kernels, because most others
were really easy to add.

Considering that Marcelo will never apply everything at once, would you find
more interesting that he merges difficult parts once, and let the easy ones to
all of us, or that he merges only the easy parts and let us have a hard time
merging the rest every time a new pre-release goes out ?

If I had the choice, I'd rather merge ALSA, i2c and friends myself, and rely on
a correctly merged VM or XFS or whatever. When you compile ALSA or i2c for your
kernel, you don't even notice that they touch the kernel, so what's the
problem ? We're not *that* lazy !

As a final note, I would say that this even increases test coverage : let's
assume that 1% of us replace the VM, while 20% add i2c. Then including i2c
will lead to 100% of us testing it and 1% of us testing the VM. On the other
hand, merging the VM into mainline whill lead to 100% of us testing it and 20%
of us testing i2c. Which case do you think is more reasonable for stability ?

Alsa compiles nicely outside the kernel, in contrast to XFS and
device-mapper.

I think merging ALSA in 2.4 series bring some of the advantages of the
2.6 series to the stable kernel, just new drivers with improvements over
OSS... but I dont think that will help in the switching to 2.6.

I like the VM and low latency proposals, I would really like to use ALSA
as an inducement to get people to go to 2.6. And that goes for other
filesystem types as well.

I'd like to see performance stuff in 2.4.23 for sure, since 2.6 is
probably not going to be stable or complete enough for general use for a
while.

Where's the problem with letting people switch from 2.4 to 2.6 and later
from OSS to ALSA?

Since OSS is still present in 2.6 I don't see any migration problems.
